1. I think he has an incredible eye for design. There are some that I don't like at all, and some I adore, but it's that boldness and originality in design that I love. In my opinion, the R8 single cut is the most elegant single cut I've seen. His work is as much an artistic statement as it is about quality instruments. So, to answer your questions, I'd have the R8 five string fretted, in 'damaged desktop' finish. I'd justify it as I view it as a work of art as well as a superlative instrument. I'd play it in all the usual pubs and clubs, as it's insured up the ass. I'm not too precious about dings, and with that finish it would be even less of an issue :-)
2. I had the old big one - great sounds, although I found that the lack of true bypass was a bit of a pain.
3. CD>iTunes>iPod I often find that Spotify often doesn't have what I'm after in terms of specific albums. I use the free Spotify service on the rare occasions that I'm working at my computer with headphones.
4.
I've opted for a string spacing of 18cm on the board ... as I am a giant octopus
Fixed. ;-)
5. I've played in: A Britpop/indie band A Jazz/funk band (who on occasion doubled as a jazz standards function band) Several rocky covers bands A Bowie tribute band And am currently in a Ska/Reggae band I also love playing blues, so would love to be in a great blues band sometime in the future.
6.
From Friday's show...
Looks like the Jam Cafe? I was out at the cinema with Mrs RR on Friday and we parked just outside there, and had a nosey to see who was setting up - didn't realise it was you! Must have been a good night, as there was a pile of puke beside the car when we returned Great pic btw
7.
Oh dear, I have just put the chrome Warwick up for sale
Hey Nige. If memory serves, you sold your East-fuelled Jazz citing lack of upper fret access/a 24 fret board. Is this something you've decided you can do without? Maybe GAS causes selective amnesia ;-)
8. CANCELLED due to a bit of a communication error! Gig #12 We're doing a 30 min set at the NU:ART exhibition at Nottingham University on Wednesday 5th March. Entrance fee includes: - A free glass of wine (or soft drink substitute) - Entry into a prize draw. - Prizes include generous donations from Wild Clothing, Nottingham, Gauntleys of Nottingham and Thorntons, Nottingham. Not sure about times yet.
9. Nice crusade, Nige :-) I've seen several Basschatters live, and have enjoyed the music of many others, either by buying a CD or just listening online. I've found that diverting time from the endless string of threads on 5 strings, fenders, which amp, narwhale tusk v cameltoe nut etc. and listening to the competition entries is time well spent. I've even spread the love by sending a link to Dave Vader's Rola Cola song to a mate, who loves it.
10. I bet the sustain on those is rubbish
11. Aswad's bass player also plays on the first (magnificent) Finlay Quaye album. Thanks for these examples, that Aswad one above is filthy!
12. I've voted on this now. This is purely from a non technical point of view (what the hell is a stem? :-D) so it's literally just what I liked the sound of.
13. A little chilled out blues from a one-off gig six odd years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEa_wbBBIgU&list=UUlCBOEKvmgopY-prhtUILTw&index=14
14. Nostalgia 77 - The main funky groove comes in after one minute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxXfdQO6Qqs
15. Why not raise a thread from the dead in order to post a link to these fun DIY dub tools :-) http://www.jimjohnstone.co.uk/dubselector/dubselector4.html http://www.jimjohnstone.co.uk/dubselector/dubselector8.html
16. I've logged in after a period of self imposed BC detox, just to vote in this. Well done all, some great stuff. btw, if you see Soundcloud comments by a piece of toast, that's me :-)
17. My ears tell me that the main riff is in Em7 and the ascending part you've asked about is in Bm7
18.
So what are new ways that music artists can make enough money to live on from their work? And don't give me that bollocks about great art coming from suffering. Great art comes from having the time and energy to put into creating it, instead of having to spend most resources into other things in order to be able to put food on the table and a roof over your head.
You could always save some food/rent money by illegally downloading your music for free rather than buying it, BRX ;-D Edit: please don't shout at me, you know it was only a joke :-)
19.
Sorry, RR, but not all of us are as erudite as you. Could you please explain in more detail what you are in fact alluding to here? It boggles the mind. On another note, just like your genius sig, it again confirms my thesis on how people can be classy without class. Oh, and pics, please! best, bert
Let's just say that she requested a private recital; a continuous and prolonged drone, preferably with crescendo, on her bagpipe. No pics. She was devoid of class, and my girlfriend (now wife) was ten feet away watching with amusement.
20.
Had a girl come up on stage and said she was hypnotised by our keyb players fast fingers...??? what to say about that..!!!
I once played Didgeridoo at a local on Australia Day. A lady came up to me afterwards, first commenting on the girth of the didgeridoo, then commenting on my circular breathing, not too subtly insinuating that it might come in handy in a more .. ahem... intimate setting!
21.
I know this seems mercenary but its time to sell my trace elliot v8 amp Any Idea what these sell for as they do not seem ot come up very often
Usually around a tenner, PM me and I won't even haggle :-D Welcome to Basschat
22. Glad your circumstances have improved in the last few years. Welcome to BC
23. I can't remember the last time I've played solo to anyone. I'm not a flashy player at all, so would just play something recognisable, like Groove is in the Heart
