1. Bump for a righteous dude. Pierre will ensure that your bass reaches the UK in perfect condition :-)
2. Hmmmm.. Added J pup and knob, refin, refret, modern strap locks. To answer your question - no, it's not just you :-)
3. Welcome to Basschat, sounds like you need to get out there gigging ASAP. Enjoy :-)
4.
Very good gig last night, one of the best Iv'e had with my present band. Well paid, free drinks, enthusiastic audience, we all played well, three encores. I'm feeling really pleased until........I come back into the pub after loading my car to see the drummer having a rant at our guitarist/bandleader which ended with him resigning with immediate effect. Bad end to a great evening.
Three encores ... Yay Drummer resignation ..... Boooo Hopefully when things calm down he'll come back
5. I have been guilty of the slapathon thing years ago. I remember testing a bass wah pedal in a Dublin shop with minutes of relentless slap. What a knob :-) Not been in a music shop for years now. Probably The Bass Centre around 2005, as I worked near It, and would pop in at lunchtime every now and then. I think I'd just have played a mid tempo groove number.
6. I've asked some guys I know from a Kent-based originals band who would fit the bill nicely Edit. They can't do that date unfortunately. Good luck with the search
7. What if you saw Robert De Niro bench press a tonne of cats? Would you explode? :-) Welcome to Basschat, Crusades sounds great.
8. Welcome to Basschat Tomas :-)
9.
Very true. The idea was to make them mix and match-able. Not produce the finest instruments in the world. If you want the iconic image and sound then who cares about a few gaps here and there?
True! My 78P has a decent gap, but it still sounds and plays great, and has never moved. Good for storing plectrums too.
10.
There's a guy at the Greyhound jam sessions on Sundays that always does this one. The backing band eventually started using it as an excercise in how many different styles and time signatures/tempos they could get it done in before the end of the song. Singer took it in good spirit though!
Ha - possibly the same chap! Sounds like the only way to make it tolerable :-)
11. Now that I have the cover, I thought I'd post some more pics: As you can see, it's a Roqsolid cover, and a great fit (a relief, as it was me who submitted the dimensions)
12. Charic, yours looks a bit more 'excited'. And a beaver has been gnawing on its arse ;-)

If I remember correctly, Mrs. Johnston had a spat with Mods on the subject of being able to say what you think on the forum, there were accusations of hypocracy, and then was unable to delete her account. Johnston backed her up in a forceful manner, then vanished.
14. I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd chip in - unless I missed it, no-one has suggested playing up near the neck. Fattens things things up instantly.
15. You could pretend it's a deliberate and highly desirable feature, like on the '57 P Bass
16. http://www.facebook.com/events/365271943570978/?ref=2 Next gig is at The Maze, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham on Saturday 26th Jan. 8pm £5 on the door Here's what you'll experience: JIMMY THE SQUIRREL One of Nottingham’s finest dancing bands! Having been together for nearly a decade and in that time seen their sound evolve from Ska/Punk to Ska/Reggae, the Squirrel’s have been working hard over the last year to get a new album out in 2013 with once more a change in sound and maturity! Having toured the UK and shared stages along the way with the likes of The Beat, The Selecter, The Slackers, Jaya the Cat, Chris Murray and many more and had members of Pama International and The Big work on their last album, which was released on cult Ska label, Do The Dog Records, JTS have big plans in 2013….and this is the start, with the release of their brand new single – See Me Smile. Supports come from…. UJAHM Recent additions to the Nottingham music scene, Ujahm play an upbeat mix of traditional reggae, 2 Tone Ska and punchy bass pop! The 4 piece have been playing in many bands in the city in the past and since forming last year have had crowds bouncing and high praise from all that have witnessed their shows! Certainly one to be watching out for this year! TOO SPICY Reggae, ska, dub and a bit of punk hailing from the north. Born just over 2 years ago they came together mixing ska, reggae, punk and the occasional dub tune. They’ve already had the great pleasure of playing alongside all time legends Toots and The Maytals, Fishbone, The Beat, The Selecter, Bad Manners and current heroes Gentleman’s Dub Club, Random Hand, New Town Kings, By The Rivers, Jeramiah Ferrari, Spunge…To name a few. WILLIAM BAILEY Local legend, William Bailey comes to get the night started off with his catchy, sing along punk, folk and ska songs. Known as the man behind comedy punks Arse Full Of Chips and Ska/Punk band Gone and Lost It as well as a former members of Nottingham Ska band Breadchasers, Will is a master song writer whose songs stick in your head long after the end of his set! Just a quick update - a local radio station have a weekly roundup of live music, and an annual top ten live acts of the year. Ujahm got in there at number ten! Not exactly a Grammy, but nice to have some appreciation!
17. According to Barefaced, this is no. 2 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151429232852704&set=a.10150125091062704.324333.130257677703&type=1&theater
18.
Looks like I might be testing the theory. Since this thread started I've been in contact with a band who don't play the sort of stuff I'd naturally gravitate toward and they are all much younger than me. Not been in a band for a year now so about time I got back into it, will be interesting to see how it pans out. They might just bin me after an audition of course but I'll see what happens, first meet scheduled for Jan 26th.
Good luck with that Kev. I was in a 'classic rock covers' band a few years back, and didn't like all of the songs (e.g. I liked Won't get Fooled Again, Rocket Man and Dear Prudence, but not China Row or How Long) I had to weigh up the pros and cons, and in the end told myself that if I ever found myself reluctantly going to rehearsals and gigs, time to quit. Luckily the things stayed enjoyable, but there were some "I'm not playing that cheesy Billy Joel song" moments along the way :-)
19. Wow - so that's Gretsch and Stingray hated too! I'm coming to the conclusion that any bass with any kind of distinct styling will offend someone's eyes. The only ones missing from this thread are the more blandly styled instruments, which can't offend as the styling is so unimaginative (IMO) I'm talking Bass Collection SB, Ibanez SR, Yamaha RBX etc. So, in conclusion, you should only be upset with this thread if your bass is NOT mentioned
20.
I was listening to some Aretha Franklin the other day and was struck by how prominent and how tasteful the bass in 'Border Song (Holy Moses)' is. Anyone know how played it? Kaye, Jamerson? Truckstop
Chuck Rainey. The whole of the 'young grifted and black' album is bass gold!
