Inventive packed lunch

A good gig with the Sweetpotato Soundsystem and varoius DJs playing reggae, Drum n Bass and Northern Soul. It was a lovely community feel, with soundcheck in the afternoon and then being treated to a curry before the gig. This was great fun with thirty odd people. The Sweetpotato Soundsystem is a rediculous 16kw Void soundsystem, and they're not afraid to use it. Each of the four subs contains 2x18 drivers in an enormous enclosure with folded horns. During the DJ set, some notes actually blurred my vision! Pint glasses had to be held, as they would vibrate off the table if left unattended. I DI'd into this system, but thankfully with a sensible sound guy. The gig was fun, with a great atmosphere and loads of positive feedback. My new cab, the '69er, performed well, although I think I suffered some phasing issues where I couldn't hear much bass on stage

I had a quick listen for now and loved what I heard (soup Jesus and Superstar) Will have a proper listen later. Nice one

It has all the ‘idiosyncrasies’ of a late-70s Fender bass; it weighs a metric tonne, and you can stash your phone in the neck pocket gap. I love it. It plays beautifully, sounds great and looks groovy [*]Wood & Tronics Ergon 5. Chambered mahogany body, three-piece maple neck and kingwood board. Mahogany headstock facia and trussrod cover. Ebony pickup covers, scratchplate and eq knobs. Brass nut. Häussel jazzbucker & jazz single coil pickups. East S2 preamp. Controls are volume/pickup pan, humbucker/single coil switch, bass and treble (with internal frequency dials). Sporting EB Cobalt strings. This is my main player as I’m using the B string a lot at the moment. It oozes quality and has a rich and even timbre across all five strings. [/list] With both of these basses, I have everything covered. The Precision is the comfy old jumper to the Ergon’s sharp tailored suit, the fruity merlot to the Ergon’s complex pinot noir.[list] [*]Red Iron amp (with some modifications done by John Chambers of Champ Electronics). 100w all valve. 2 x 6SL7s (Tung Sol) in the pre and 2 x KT88s (JJ) in the power. Self-made case. Controls are gain, bass, mid, treble and master on the front, and a line out, 4/8/16 Ohm selector and speaker out on the back. I’m really attached to this amp – it’s got a couple of odd points (too hot DI, eq l-r is bass, treble, mid!)) but all is forgiven as soon as I start playing through it. It’s heavy, but still an easy one-hand lift. [*]Barefaced '69er. This is the first one. I only got this today, so haven't even plugged it in yet! Well, I've just been told by Alex that '69er number 1 is finally ready! (subject to final testing). I've just paid the balance and will get it on Friday. I plan to stick some nice pics of my full setup in the porn forum as soon as the '69er arrives, so I'll post a link on here. Re. Breaking the speakers in, yes I had read that thread with interest. I'm glad gigging it immediately won't do it any harm, and am prepared to reserve judgement on tone until it's been gigged/rehearsed with a few times. Prime Bass, we mostly gig around Nottingham so come and see/hear it for yourself (if you like reggae)

I don't make instruments, but I do hand-make furniture, and clients always seem to want oak, so I have a lot of experience with it. Observations from my experience: - 'Green' oak cuts is as soft as a turnip, but useless for anything other than outdoor applications, unless you want big, rustic movement. - Oak is heavyish, buy not bonkers heavy. I'd say on a par with mahogany or maple, but nowhere near as heavy as bubinga/cocobolo, wenge etc. - It is quite hard and open-grained, but works reasonably easily. Not the cleanest of cuts in the world, but nothing a bit of tidying can't sort out. - it contains tannins, which, when in contact with moisture and metal, goes black. The sort of moisture content in seasoned oak is that doesn't get wet has never been an issue. I've never had an issue with oak corroding metal. - It finishes easily enough. I've never had an problem with uneven finishing, unless it's a very heavily figured piece with wildly varying densities, such as a burr. - aesthetically, the tangentially sawn stuff can be a bit boring, but not always. The quarter-sawn stuff can have some spectacular medullary rays. - tonally? No idea, I'll leave that to the luthiers. I had no idea oak has such a bad rep! :-)
