1. It is a bit heavy on the black around the edges. What's with the uneven rosewood at the headstock end? That would do my nut in, so to speak
2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxQxsWQGrL0 A great version of this oft-covered song
3. Being a mono-instrumentalist with no means of recording anyway, I don't have anything to add to this thread except for my vote, and to say that the quality and standard seem to growing exponentially every month. Well done everyone!
4. I must be really lucky, as I've not had this in all the bands I've been in. Of course there have been personality clashes etc, but never a real lack of commitment or such flakiness.
5. I had to google 'lanyard' to see what the hell one was, and you're right, no use to me whatsoever. Besides, that link doesn't work on the iPad. Donation done the old fashioned way. Thanks for all your work and the great site.
6.
The wood actually turned out to be something like a darker korina once all the varnish and graffiti was sanded off!
I work with reclaimed woods quite a bit - any old science benches I've come across have been either teak or iroko, which would fit your description.
7.
Do they all have buckles or other metalwork? The site's a bit unclear. I never go for straps that have any metal on them - it's just a scratch waiting to happen...
No, I bought a simple black leather one with no hardware, and no adjustibility, I just specified the length I wanted.
8. +1 for Bear Straps. Simple, the highest quality and great customer service
9. Yup - I play with them on my Precision. Well, I did until I bought a five-string and now play that all the time. I don't find it restrictive for the most part. The only thing I find difficult is palm muting with them on.
10. Whatever has happened, I'm loving it. On the iPad, it's as if I'm in a BC app, clean, simple and no ads. Love it.
11. Help your sale by telling us about the condition, where you're based, whether you'll post or deliver it etc
12. It seemed to be organized. Nice place in central London, good communication stating exactly what they would be providing (full backline, pa, sound engineer etc) and instructions to get there 4.30pm sharp for soundcheck. The venue was a long, galleried a hall which seats about 200 Arrive 4.30, place still locked. Gear turns up, and it's a small PA and a TE Commando 1x12 combo. No sound guy shows up, so fair play to the guys who tried to set everything up, but suffice to say that first band soundchecked at 7pm! There was no option to put the bass into the PA as it wouldn't take it. God knows what the bass sounded like out front (the chap who was on the mixer was to the side of the stage with hs head next to the bass amp). There's nothing I could have done about it anyway. On the plus side, the sound was surprisingly good on stage, and the TE punched well above its weight. We played quite well and got a good reception. We'll put that one down to experience!

14. BRX, if you don't mind me saying, you have quite an unconventional left hand technique, certainly not economical, but somehow in keeping with the energy of the band, and it sounds great. Like you say, if one achieves what one sets out to do, who cares how it was achieved. Btw, there are similar points being made in the 'Economy of Motion' thread in the techniques forum.
15. Possibly a Fender Victor Bailey sig Jazz? The body is mahogany, a layer of rosewood and koa top. Shame about the gold hardware :-( http://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-victor-bailey-jazz-bass-fretless-natural/55214?gclid=CL2HqNyazrMCFcrItAodFAsAUQ Edit, ignore me, I didn't read the op properly and haven't even seen the Jools show!
16. Wow. That was AMAZING* *I'm amazed the bandmates didn't push him off the stage in embarrasment
17. Ok, I conceded that I wouldn't be able to find a small one, so bought the Hercules one. Just one extra thing to carry, right? First gig, all fine, until I unpack my stuff at home and realise it was left at the venue. I was just so used to one case and amp, that I left it among the other band's kit. Now lost into the ether :-(
18. I once had an Epiphone El Capitan which played and sounded lovely. Around £280. My only criticism was that is was not particularly loud unplugged.
19. Very nice. Interesting relicing too, and I'm trying to work out what it says about Sting's technique. Does he anchor his thumb on the body sometimes, and other times play with his thumb, anchoring his fingers under the strings? Or maybe he just picks diagonally, occasionally striking the body above and below the strings? I guess you're the expert
20. I like that. I don't tend to listen to much of this type of music these days (apart from RATM occasionally) but went through a big phase of loving 311, Downset, Dust Junkies etc. and this fits right in these, both stylistically and in terms of quality. Good luck with the single.
21. I'm really enjoying our band. It's very diverse in terms of age, ethnic origin, experience, gender and even class. Obviously these differences are not important, as we gel so well musically. Socially, the conversation doesn't flow like with a close bunch of friends, but we like eachother. I think that side will take time. We can survive five hours in a car together with no issues, so I think we'll be ok! My last band was a six piece with a hard hitting drummer and loud guitarist, and enjoyable though that was, I'm really enjoying the space that our simple setup creates now. Oh, and I get to play big, fat basslines with no one competing with my frequencies :-) http://soundcloud.com/search?q%5Bfulltext%5D=Ujahm+band
22.
The point of a 5 string bass isn't just to play low notes.
That directed at me? I agree with you
