1. You don't mention weight, so I'm going to suggest the EAiAmp 350 Combo. they pop up every now and then second hand. It's a single 1x10 combo, small but heavyish. They seem to be out of fashion ATM so are going for peanuts. New RRP was around £1100 but I've seen them go for as little as £380. Very solid build quality and sound great, I only sold mine as I went down the valve route.
2. Gig coming up in London! 17th November at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden. It's part of the "Promoting Positivity Through Music" event
3.
Not really funk but definitely Groovy, i love this, its the texture of the brass,
That's really good, cheers Some New Mastersounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdEkLkhZwK8
4. FYI the flats in the picture (presumably the ones it came with) are the Steve Harris Sig Rotosounds.
5.
Any interest in a Sansamp VT bass?
Sorry, I've been away on holiday. I'm all valve, so think I have all the 'VT' I need already! Thanks though
6. Hotrox are great also. Lovely people http://www.hotroxuk.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=12ax7
7. There's a few on here... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/188496-glastonbudget-festival/
8. Revisiting two old albums - I'd forgotten how superb they are: Astral Weeks by Van Morrison and The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails.
9. I don't really like these types of comparisons, but you could say that they were both pioneers who found new ways to express themselves on their respective instruments. Jimi redefined what the electric guitar was capable of, and to a certain extent LG did the same with slap on bass.
10.
Dep gig from hell at a restaurant/pub. Got a provisional 'set list' on Tues, worked hard on learning as much as I could in time allowed (was sent >35 songs). Turned up and spotted the band were advertised as 'able to play anything' and 'will take requests'. Ended up actually playing maybe 20% of provided list, rest was just thrown at me on the spot whether I knew it or not. The landlord wanted to do some singing himself (none from set list) then some kid turned up that the landlord had promised could play along with us for a few gig (none from set list). The lights were arranged to avoid them shining in the eyes of any people sat eating which meant they were directly in my eyes instead, when I tried to look at the band leader to guess where he was playing on his guitar (something I'm not that great at, don't play guitar) all I saw was a silouhette, dress code was all black. Went on at 9:45 and finished about 12:40am with a 10min break in the middle, got home about 2:30am. Backing him again at a jam session tomorrow afternoon. My thrill at the prospect is unbound...
That sounds like a very stressful experience! You must have done well to get the another gig. Well done",
11. Victor Wooten in a tent, aka VW Camper. :-)
That's nice. Boring question: Do you have to take the neck off to put a tight piece of elastic around the headstock like that? Seems it would be difficult to get around the headstock and tuners and still be effective on the strings when dragged over the nut.
I would imagine that Mr Wooten's bass is a set neck, so taking it off would not be an option! I don't think it needs to be super tight, as it acts as a damper/mute rather than a capo.
12. If you're thinking of coming to the gig at the Bodega Social, let me know and I'll put you on a list where you can get in for a fiver, rather than the usual £8 + booking fee
13. I can forgive Fenders for being 'boring' because of their pedigree, but I find Ibanez SR and those old Bass Collections with the skinny headstock really, really dull looking, as if they were designed by a committee of accountants.
14.
Well, Hard Normal Daddy and Feed Me Weird Things seem to come up the most, or certainly very often, in favourite Squarepusher album threads, and they aren't too extreme, which is why I recommended them to Ray. Go Plastic I'd rate as one of his more difficult albums; and Ufabulum I couldn't get into at all, and is quite different to his previous output. But, hey, whatever floats your boat.
I was by no means questioning your recommendations, just musing aloud as it were :-) It took me a while to get into Ubfubulum, but it's been in the car player for ages and I've recently really got into it, especially the dark and powerful second half. I remember buying "Budakahn Mindphone" ep in a record shop in Dublin back in 1999, a bit more organic and ambient than later stuff, but I hadn't heard anything like it before, been hooked ever since.
15. Sounds great. I didn't know that he had a 'classic period' - those are good albums, but for me Go Plastic and Ubfubulum are the best. I find Ultravisitor like many double albums in that it would be much better if they made it half as long and just kept the best bits. Anyway, I'm dead jealous, I love Squarepusher live, and not seen him for years.
16. If Carlsberg made basses, they would be mass-produced and utterly bland :-)

18. I missed this, thanks for the heads up, I'll get it on catchup. I really like Grizzly Bear, very inventive and somewhat odd. The video to 'The Knife' being a good example of extreme oddness! http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=xuYZbYtAl9A&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DxuYZbYtAl9A

20. The main reason I do it is because I can't be arsed to get the amp out of the cupboard, although I do sometimes play through the aux on my digital radio. You're right though, playing unplugged really cleans up one's technique, as rattles and buzzes are much more obvious.
21. Great stuff. I love the bassline, and rhyming 'ruckus' with 'm*****f***ers' is inspired.
