1.
What is talent?
In music? Getting a sound and putting it together with other sounds, where the result is more than the sum of its parts. It doesn't matter whether it's a double bass note, a sample, or the crash of a dustbin lid.
2. I love that song, especially the end section, just gorgeous. I concur that it was Chuck Rainey. For a similar style, check out Aretha's versions of 'Holy Moses (Border Song)' and 'Young Gifted and Black'. Chuck again. Edit. Oops, too early in the morning! For some reason I was thought you were enquiring about 'The Long and winding Road' version. Re. 'You're all I need to get by', I have the live versions that she did at the Filmore West with Jerry J, but not the studio version - will check it out!
3. Cheers for all the suggestions and advice folks. Hmmmm, looks like some compromise may be in order. I suppose carrying a stand separately is not such a hardship :-) Edit, this looks pretty good http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Single-Guitar-Stand-GS100/dp/B0002BG2DQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345642114&sr=8-1
4. I assumed that Jon was basically saying 'why not lean your bass against your lead's amp input jack like everyone else?' I'd be nervous about that, besides, the lead plugs into the bottom of the bass, so I'd rather not rest it on the ground. That Hercules one looks ok - any idea of the folded dimensions?
5. I think that ex name basses/guitars have more value because they are often easier to identify, and there will be plenty more pics of the artist with it. The physical contact/connection with an instrument is worth a lot - 'this is the bass that xxxxx played' is much cooler than 'this is the amp that xxxxx played through'. There is also the wear and tear issue. Personally, I'd view a well worn ex name P as 'mojo', whereas with an amp, I'd be more concerned about how much it had been abused over the years, and how much life it has left in it. I once saw an 'ex-Mani' SWR bass cab in Leeds, but the thought of the life of excess that this may have led was quite off putting.
6. I've had a search on BC, but haven't seen what I'm after. I have a new bass with an offset style body, a bit like a Jazz. I like to take a stand to gigs but the new bass does not sit safely on my existing stand. So, my criteria are: - safely accommodates an offset-style bass - fits in the pocket of my gig bag, a Mono M80. The large pocket on this is approx 35cm x 25cm and a few cm deep. Any suggestions would be welcome. Ta
7. Welcome to Basschat :-)
8. I've just received my Bear Strap today. Great quality, simple, made to measure and good customer service.
9. No problem with it at all, in fact Paul's Boutique is one of my favourite albums
10. Very very nice. Definitely the best choice. I have a few spare orange rubber 'grolsch' strap locks if you want them :-)
11. How about Bowie's 'Lady Stardust', Floyd's 'Breathe' or Steppenwolf's 'The Pusher' Not so much ballads, but excellent slower rock songs

The Aria DMB is quite a looker, especially for the price http://www.projectmusic.net/aria-dmb-380-candy-apple-red-bass-guitar-8210-p.asp
13. The title of the thread seems to be causing a bit of confusion. I believe it's not about slap in the Flea/Larry Graham sense, but more the tone achieved where (usually metal) players whack the strings to the extent that they 'slap' the frets and create a metallic clanky sound. The title also causes annoyance for pedants who think it should read ' .....play it correctly'. :-) Regarding the OP's question, I would refer to the quote in my signature. If people like the way it sounds, then it's 'right'. Just because that's not the way it was originally meant to be played, doesn't mean it can't be done. In fact, I'd go one further and suggest that this kind of open-mindedness and experimentation is crucial for moving music forwards. Trumpet mute, snare rimshots, thumb/slap/pop bass, all techniques which enrich the repertoire of the instrument. Saying that, I'm not into that clangy sound at all, but 'right' is what the listener likes the sound of.
14.
thanks for the input guys. seems a lot of work to go to to laminate like this when you could just saw the shape out of a lump of wood. or maybe getting a large enough piece of wood is the problem? anyone else got any similar pics? cheers.
Like MiltyG565 says, it's cheaper. Lots of smaller bits of wood are cheaper than one big piece. Technically, a laminate is where two or more materials are stuck on top of each other, so you're right, but when people talk about basses etc, they would generally describe this as ply, and the more expensive instruments with exotic wood tops as laminate.
15. Welcome Matt. ( see what I did there? :-D)
16. Like Bert says, you don't need to be a good player to post - just look at me :-) Welcome to Basschat

19. I don't get that either :-) Welcome to Basschat
20. Just played a small festival. It was on a bandstand with a kind of amphitheatre setup, really cool. Our most popular song is called 'Lollopop' and our little group of hardcore fans had all brought massive lollipops to wave about during the song! Corny but funny at the same time. Good short set, sunny day, lovely atmosphere.
21.
My EA iAmp 500 is the cleanest amp I have ever played through and really brings out the natural tone of your instrument with very little tweaking
Agreed, except mine was a 350
