1. I don't get that bin bag one. Maybe I need better speakers, but it sounds like someone left the petrol generator running outside the window. And people have binbags on their heads. In what looks like a classroom. Regarding Miles, I didn't mind that set. I tend to listen to Bitches Brew over Kind of Blue much more these days.
2. I've been using an iPad for a while now, and have been unable to do the following: - initiate PM conversations - delete posts - use emoticons - embed YouTube vids - view a lot of You Tube vids, they just seem to be greyed out - post pictures, either attached or from a hosting site All of the above seem to work fine on my laptop. Is it me?
3. I've heard (and liked) a few Electric Wizard songs. Welcome to BC
4. Sorry BRX, I can't make it as we're practicing tonight. Have a good one.
5.
They have some pretty ampeg stacks I'm pmt in Manchester. Might go down and have a little look. Although, I've heard there made in India or somewhere now and I'd begrudge paying top dollar for a cheaply made product. I'd like to buy UK if possible.
FYI the EBS T90 is made in China
6. Each to their own. I'm not a trannie :-)
7. I think there's a difference between fashionable and cool. 'Fashionable', by definition means popular. 'Cool' needs a combination of exclusivity and desirability, to look good while being different from the norm. The cool thing grows in popularity and eventually becomes fashionable, and consequently uncool :-) So where does that leave Warwicks? I hardly ever see them out at gigs, so not fashionable. As far as cool is concerned, it's subjective, but I certainly don't have GAS for one, ergo not cool. All this coming from a distinctly uncool person! :-D
8. Yes, Alyctes kindly sent these to me when I had ideas about making quirky tables from old bass bodies. Since then, my designs have gone in quite a different direction, and quite successfully so. Consequently I don't think the bass table thing will happen. Rather than have these sit in my workshop, I thought another BCer should have the use from them. Yamaha bits now gone to the turnip-headed Gibsonphile
9.
Jam night at the Barge and Barrel, Tipton. And my first time playing with a band! I was dead excited. It is a lovely pub with a great atmosphere, so the perfect place for a debut! We were on next to last as singer couldnt get there till late as he was in a poetry competition. When he arrived he was all grumpy about having had to leave the poetry early. I was determined not to let that get me down tho and went on full of enthusiasm. It went pretty well! We're not the best band in the world but we played to the best if our ability with no cock ups. I didn't let nerves get the better if me and managed to throw in a few moves! Funnily enough the guitarist tends to just stand there doing nothing much, so I thought I would adopt some rock n roll postures and toss me hair about a bit. Great fun! A couple of punters said they enjoyed it afterwards and I got a big hug from Drummers Mum (who is probably about same age as me tbh!). So all in all I'm feeling rather pleased with myself :-)
Sounds great! Well done, especially cutting some shapes on your first gig! :-)
10. Patience is a virtue! I've been biding my time on EBay and eventually a Zoom H2 came up where the bidding ended at 4pm. Got it for £60 with leads, memory card, a USB key, rechargeable batteries and a quality soft case. Now to get to grips with Reaper.....
11. I have a few bits lying around which were originally acquired for a quirky furniture project which was abandoned. There is a neck and red body from a Yamaha 4 string, no hardware. GONE There's also a J shaped body. This is definitely an amateur job. Pine body with wenge top. Again, no hardware. In fact I'm not even sure there's a neck socket! Collection only from Bulwell, Nottingham.
12. I have a hard case to give away. The brand is Freestyle, a good Yorkshire-made item. All hinges and clasps work as they should. It's not particularly 'fitted', just a big fur-lined rectangle with a soft furry bar to hold the neck roughly in place. I bought it second hand fifteen years ago, and it has been been tucked behind the stage at many a live show, so has all the nicks in the black faux alligator covering that you would expect. I'm getting rid as I'm a recent convert to the semi hard (fnar fnar) cases, and although it may be handy for the odd time we chuck gear in a van, I simply don't have the space. It definitely fits a Stingray or a Precision, as that's what I've been carrying in it. I can't speak for other shaped/sized instruments. Pickup only from Bulwell, Nottingham.
13. Pierre is a good person to trade with. Good communication, the item is exactly as described, and it was really well packaged. Highly recommended.
14. I'd say you should be fine. At worst it will cup a bit, but by the time you laminate (glue) it to the main body it will straighten out no worries. Hope the project goes well
15. How thick is it? If it's veneer, from my experience, you're actually better storing veneers in a slightly damper environment, as it can dry up and crack if kept in a particularly dry room. With a bit of moisture, it is more flexible and less likely to break. If it gets a bit of mould on it, this is easily sanded off, but veneering warped and cracked veneer is a nightmare. A burr veneer by its very nature has some areas more dense than others, so can go wavy or buckle. Keeping it pressed between two flat MDF panels is advised like the above article says. However, you describe it as laminate. Is it glued to another timber? With solid wood, my advice would be to store it in the same environment it will be living in when the project is finished. That way, it will be pre-acclimatised and will be less likely to move. Also, is it significantly thicker than it will be when finished? If so, I'd advise machining it now so that it's only a few mm thicker than it needs to be, and then store it. There is a higher moisture content in the middle of a board, and sometimes if you take a large amount off the thickness (especially resawing) then you end up with a board with one dry face and one not so dry. The result is unwanted cupping. It's not always the case, and depends on how well seasoned the timber is, but worth bearing in mind. Hope this helps.
16. Sorry if this is too OT, but has anyone else been looking at the speakers at the Olympic Stadium in terms of dispersion? Quite a challenge. Each 'stack' hangs high, and is vertically aligned. But then the stacks are arranged horizontally around the stadium.
17. Gig#4 Medfest, a mini festival held in the Meadows area of Nottingham. Sunday 19th August, The Bandstand on Victoria Embankment. I think we're on at 5pm
18. Lovely, worth it after all that running about! I'd be interested to hear whether those Lloyds Pharmacy preamps are any good. Some say they're a bit sterile.
19. Could you stretch to an RBS Session 60? http://www.thomann.de/gb/ebs_classic_session_60_combo.htm Edit - should be EBS, as far as I'm aware, the Royal Bank of Scotland don't make combos.
20. When I played with the Bowie tribute, 'Boys Keep Swinging' often cleared the dance floor. Maybe it's not quite well known enough, or maybe it was the four minute section at the end with both bass and guitar wigging out simultaneously :-)
21. Great, thanks for the info. They sound well worth a punt
22.
Are the SP's dampened and batted? or does the heavy cab have sufficient rigidity to not need batting? I'd hesitate as I've heard some Orange cabs have a lack of these crucial features... even at oranges prices (which aren't rock bottom).
I think Orange are pretty old school when it comes to internal bracing, unlike BF. The SP is a bit different, though. Due to the nature of the isobaric design, it will have a second baffle set a couple of inches behind the visible front one to hold the second driver, not to mention the horizontal section on which it sits. All of this could be viewed as internal bracing, although that's not its primary purpose. All adds to the weight :-)
23. You say that weight is a factor. The SP210 weighs 44lbs, and the Compact weighs 27lbs. Quite a difference!
24. What are these like in terms of feel? I'm after something that's not as bumpy/rough as a regular round wound, yet more modern sounding than flats.
