1. A lot of our songs are created by jamming a groove for a while until something clicks. Unfortunately, more often than not I've forgotten what bassline I was playing by the next week. Also, sometimes I think of a bassline but will have forgotten it by the time I next pick up my bass. In short, I need a small recorder which i can put in the rehearsal room, or sing into, which will pick up bass frequencies well. Any suggestions?
2.
That's not true, Eazy E's dad was called Richard
Maybe I've been suckered into believing an urban myth! (along with many others) http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituary-eazye-1614134.html
3. trivia: Charles Wright was Easy E's father. I'm guessing they didn't have too much trouble acquiring the rights!
4. You've turned a savaged m***er into a very cool looking bass. Great vision and opportunity seizure. The word m1nger seems to be censored because it contains the word m1nge
5. I fear that Theo was typing this in an internet cafe, and got mugged as soon as someone saw that he had £1000.
6. However much my refinished 78 P is worth. Not much choice as it's my only one. I've never felt uneasy about pub gigs, but I don't like leaving my gear lying around at festivals. I don't even play that many festivals, but it's a good excuse for another bass :-)
7.
Turn down the bass and treble and crank the volume.
This. It took me ages to work out that this was what I needed to do to get a sound I liked out of my 2 eq stingray.,
8. Daughter is watching 'the frog princess' Brilliant new Orleans soundtrack, even has Dr John. Great stuff
9. One of those stupid spiky coloured wigs when depping on a Glam Rock gig.
10. A series of articles showing a proper, scientific method to prove/disprove that wood has something to do with the tone of an electric bass guitar. A 'debate' section, with two experts arguing about the topic of the month, eg 4 v 5 string, valve v SS, BO v NT, etc. etc. there is something similar in Land Rover Owners magazine (you'd be amazed how many contentious issues there are between Land Rover enthusiasts.)
11. Why not* totally rip off the entire Top Gear format: - 'star with a reasonably priced bass guitar'. You have an Encore P bass, and each week let a virtuoso play it and see how they make it sound, with videos online. - 'The Cool Wall' - what's cool ATM and what's very uncool. Should get those letters flooding in! - as previously mentioned, give three writers a budget of £300 to buy eg 'best bass for metal' or 'largest rig' and let them battle it out - Challenges, eg make a rig that works underwater etc. * cos it would probably be rubbish
12. The one on my 78 is that dark burgundy colour too.
13. I have one bass, one amp and one cab. However, due bigger and more frequent gigs in the near future, I'm looking at a backup bass, and a bigger cab is imminent. I may sell the 2x10 but only if I get a decent price, otherwise it will live in the band rehearsal room.
14. Duplicate post that my iPad won't let me delete
15. I'm learning lots here! I've also remembered that he laid down the superb baseline on 'The Revolution will not be Televised'
16.
turn the truss rod left = to loosen the truss rod = less concave neck. True or false?
That's my understanding. So the Marlin (assuming the truss rod still works) needs a fair few anti clockwise turns
17. Thay have a really bad name, but my first bass was identical to this(except for the bowed neck) and it played and sounded fIne. I did scores of gigs and even some recording on it. I suspect mine may have been the exception to the rule, as most people on BC say theirs were utterly sh*t
18. Yeah, Justin Meldal Johnston, John Paul Jones, that one from the Stranglers. I wonder if the rev. Jesse Jackson is any good :-)
19.
His tone isn't my favourite, but JJ is playing on one of my favourite records of all time, Erma Franklin's Piece Of My Heart.
Beautiful. The playing in that chorus is illustrative of what I love about his style. He has a lovely ability to distribute the notes of the scale (with the odd chromatic run) within a bar in an odd yet funky way. Jaco quoted him as an influence, and when listening to 'Come on Come Over', you can really tell.
20. Welcome Joel, great of you to brave the BC world! I'm at the end of my subscription, and am on the fence regarding whether to renew. here are some of my BGM musings: - The Bassically speaking section: Obviously the players are given a list of questions to answer, such as 'do you play 5 or 6 string basses', 'do you slap', 'what was your first bass', etc. All these people are doing is answering the questions honestly. If a reader gets so wound up by their answers, I'd suggest that the issue lies with some of their own insecurities! Maybe you subconsciously wish you were as rock n roll as them :-) - Positive reviews: Do any manufacturers turn out a truly dire instrument in these days? As far as I can see, the reviews are mostly positive because the instruments are good for their price bracket. I've seen plenty of examples where a BGM review has highlighted areas for improvement. Oddly though, there sometimes seems to be little correlation between the written content and the number of stars awarded when it comes to 'value for money'. - Joel, your 'woodshed' section had suddenly improved tenfold! It seems to have suddenly changed to content that I can understand and is relevant to my playing. Come to think of it, I might renew that description, if only to have something decent to read on the toilet (no offence intended Joel, that is my sanctuary, my sole opportunity to read anything these days)
21. JJ deserves his own thread. Two of my favourite albums are Aretha live at the Filmore West, and BB King's Live and Well. A master class in groovy bass playing. That is all. Apart from this video.. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpA
22. http://db.tt/0f7LBvS5 A one-off reunion gig for uni mates. Great gig it was too Sorry for the link, really struggling to do stuff on iPad
23. Ah yes, I remember now that John C refers all SS stuff to the other John
