1. Wow, I've never seen a Wal in that dark red before, and it's so much nicer than the normal natural wood finish IMO. Kind of like a super EB3. Lovely
2. Haha, shows what my memory is like. Thinking about it, it was more than a few years ago, around 2002/3. My memory is that of a spacious stage for our five piece. The only stage where I've played the bass and didgeridoo simultaneously
3. This is a great place. I've gigged there a few times, back when I was with a jazz/funk outfit. It's been a few years now, but they used to have "The Sunday Joint" where bands would play each week, as opposed to the great funky discos on other nights. It's a good-sized stage, good PA, and when I was there, an experienced and friendly soundguy. It was never quite as busy as a Friday or Saturday, as can be expected, but it's still buzzing and they should be up dancing in no time. Unless you're sh*t Enjoy. edit, just listened to your band - really good stuff - you'll go down a treat.
4. I bought a soft case recently, and it came in a nice sturdy cardboard bass-sized box. If you'd like it, please collect from me. Bulwell,Nottingham
5. Sorry I missed it, but the changing time threw things off a bit. I saw the pics though, looked great and that Yamaha looks the nuts. Lovely.
6. It looks gorgeous. Love the retro Sei decal. I would never normally go for a white neck, but it really works on this bass. Re. the toilet seat comment - just because there is paint there, do you think it will not play smoothly? It probably has a similar laquer on the paint that most other natural necks have. I'd imagine MP would know what works and what doesn't with these things.
7. Yeah, you need to stretch that Matamp's legs a bit. It's like keeping a muscle car locked in a garage. Wrong.
8. Cheers, maybe it's because I'm on an iPad. Anyway - crikey, I wish I hadn't asked! :-) Not my cup of tea at all. I dislike quilted maple anyway, and agree that Fender should leave the fancy stuff to the 'boutique' builders? And the gold hardware.... No no no! All IMO of course
9.
Also depends on how the basses are played and recorded. Too many variables for a meaningful comparison, imho.
The link just leads me to an empty soundcloud page? I've had a 2eq Ray and a P, so would like to think that I could tell the difference. Never played a Jazz.
10. I wanted to call it 'Homo Superior' but that was vehemently vetoed by the singer. That and 'Ziggy Sprayed Catarrh'
11. It's a year sinced I moved on from my Bowie Tribute band, so looks like it's a night of nostalgia and Rioja tonight.
12. It's in the 'acoustic bass' category too
13. And a beautiful warm tone
14. One of the attributes of a great bass is that it has great sustain. To me his means playing a note, leaving it, and the string will keep vibrating for ages, a long note with minimal 'decay'. When practicing the other night, I was noting the longest I hold a note for, and it was three seconds. Even though I have an old P bass with a BBOT bridge, a gap in the neck pocket and nylon strings, there was no noticeable decay in that three seconds. How many of you hold a note for so long that decay becomes an issue? Perhaps there are some other benefits that good sustain allows, like improved tone?
15.
So you don't think maple fretboards sound brighter? I think if a string is vibrating heavily less than half an inch away from a piece of wood, which ultimately it is connected to, then some of these vibrations are going to either rebound off the board, or be absorbed by it. How much of either will depend on the type of material. If it's wood, then there are bound to be variances between different woods, even different pieces of the same type of wood. That's why custom guitar and bass makers spend a lot of time finding the right tone woods with which to build an instrument. And maple just looks better.
No arguments about the sound difference, as I've not done a scientific comparison. I also agree that the fingerboard wood will affect tone for the reasons you state. However, rosewood is definitely not softer than maple! I work with both a fair bit, and rosewood blunts my chisels a lot faster than maple! On the aesthetic side of things, it's a close call, but rosewood is nicer imo
16. Thanks. The ebay one could be a great bass for the money. I'm too cautious to buy before playing it though. Also - £60 for postage, is that normal from France?
17. Cheers. It's hard to know who is reliable and who is talking bollocks on the web sometimes. So the eBay seller seems to be correct in their description. I'd love to try out an El Maya bass. Anyone got one?
18. I'm interested in finding out about these basses. I know that they're Japanese and made in the 70s and 80s, but I can't see many details on the web. I know at least one BCer has a "Maya" bass. and here is an example of an "El Maya" bass What's the difference between these two? Different people say different things. The EBay seller says that El Maya is the high end marque for the company, but other sources say that one was the export and one was the non-export version Any experiences, reviews and information would be gratefully consumed. 20.
not usually a pop fan myself, but this is the PERFECT POP SONG.
Great choice. It's one of those songs that I heard on the radio and had to jot down the name to download that night. There are some similarities in feel to that Goldbug hit, but this is superior.
21. Gig#3 keeps changing. Details to follow once confirmed
22.
Jerry Jemmott. his work with B.B.King remains the high water mark for Blues Bass playing "Completely Well" is my pick for his recordings with King. if you cannot feel this music there is a problem.
Foal30 speaks the truth. I'd also highly recommend "Live and Well", where JJ plays on the latter studio recorded part of the album. Stupendous playing.
23. I just received my Protec case from Nick. Good communication and I'm very happy with it. Recommended.
24. Google 'Brian May Bass', that's quite close. Also have a look at other Gibsons, such as Grabber and Ripper
