1. Only your profit is taxable, so if the £50 barely covers costs, you would only need to declare the little bit that is left over as taxable income. Don't forget that bass gear is an overhead too, so it may be quite a while before you technically make any sort of profit. In other words, I wouldn't bother. The revenue ahave bigger fish to fry.
2. Veneers tend to be around 0.5mm. I'd call that a 'top' or 'facia'
3. I like the Chameleon - since I belatedly learned of its existence. Unfortunately I won't be able to make this one, but have booked in the Waterfront festival one on the 23rd.
4.
May as well add my mug to this....
Please tell me you use straplocks!
5. Yes! I've only been there once, and that was enough. I had been to see Amp Fiddler at the Jazz Cafe and it was fantastic, so I brought a few mates to see them at their next London gig, which happened to be the Forum. Awful, boomy, muddy. My mates were wondering what I had been raving about. Never again.
6. Why not? It worked for Sisters of Mercy and Carter USM. Better than a drummer too, in that you only need to punch the information into the drum machine once
7. I struggle at 14kHz. Unless hearing the little click at the start an end of each one counts.
8. Cool! Would be great to see you. I think I'd recognise you from your gig pics
9. Gig #1 Our first gig on 1st June at the miniscule Jam Cafe in Nottingham. There are a few other bands on too, but unconfirmed at present. Would be great to see you there. The other bands playing that night are Psycho Funkfish and Emily Needs. 10. You're right about ash having a very open grain, and this is bad news for your plans. I think The reason that ash is such a popular choice for staining is that you get such vivid grain definition, as the stain gets right into the large contours. Unfortunately, that the means it's harder to remove too from those contours too. Not impossible, but much more time consuming.
11. That's typical tangentially sawn maple. The more of a tangent from the radius, the less rings it crosses, hence the rings are less numerous and more wavy. The straighter and more close together the grain, the closer it is to quarter sawn. Chris B also made a good point earlier about companies using plantation timbers in recent decades, where the trees grow faster, and therefore the rings will be more spaced out.
12. Welcome to another East Midlander! My main pastimes are making furniture and playing bass, so I'm gagging to see the tallboy!
13.
...I became an Insurance Broker and joined corporate hell.
"I have nothing to say of my working life, only that a tie is a noose, and inverted though it is, it will hang a man nonetheless if he's not careful." - Yann Martel
14. Stick it on with industrial double sided tape. No holes if you don't like it.
15. 1 - Cougar 1x15 combo. Did the job fine for my early playing years. 2 - Sound City head + 4x12 HH Cab. Heavy, large, noisy and loud. 3 - SWR Basic Black Combo. Wooly and crap 4 - EA iAMP350 Combo + another CXL110 cab. Good quality, not my sound. 5 - Red Iron 100w Valve amp + EarCandy 2x10 Cab. Lovely.
16. I like the idea of a message for nerdy headstock examiner. How about in small print "If you can read this, you're too geeky"
17. I like songs which ease into the set. Two favourites of mine from various bands are the Headhunters' version of Watermelon Man, and Space Oddity
18.
My nomination for a master on the good ol' P bass would be Willie Weeks. I heard him soloing on a Donny Hathaway album ( somebody here may be able to produce details) and was absolutely blown away. This was virtuosity at its finest! Every time I hear Willie playing with whoever it is I'm always hugely impressed.
Sounds like the solo on Voices Inside/everything is everything from the album Donny Hathaway Live. Great solo.
19. Francis Rocco Prestia! Maybe not a soloist, but virtuoso imo
20. From a previous thread:
A single piece of quality well quarter sawn timber is the ideal material for guitar and bass necks
From this thread:
Flatsawn maple is fine for guitar necks. Quarter sawn hard rock maple is considered too stiff.
Is it just maple which is too stiff when quarter sawn?
21. I'll add to the love for the 78P. Mine is heavy and has gaps in the neck pocket, but who cares when the playability, tone and reliability are so great. It has been my only bass for the last 11 years, and in that time has fitted right in to jazz, funk, rock and reggae. Keeper.
22. Are we looking at the same thing? It has 67 likes afaics. I'd advise getting some music up there, I tend not to 'like' a band unless i enjoy their music.
23. I was expecting electronic dance music, but this is rawk! A bit like a metal Ozric Tentacles. My audio kept cutting out, but I think I got the gist. It holds its own as instrumental, but ime purely instrumental bands have a limited appeal. The right vocalist could take you to the next level - why not try?
