1. Cheers for the comments. We seem to be getting offered quite a few gigs off the back of it, so as a demo, it's doing its job nicely We'd best get something resembling a full-length set together!
2. Natural Mystic - like someone said earlier, it's the simplicity. The space then falling onto the root at 2 and 4, with some lovely playing behind the beat. AFMB is the man! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKtX6cf0_0A Too Much Too Young (Specials)- one of my favourite basslines ever. Busier than your average reggae bassline, but it works really well. I love the timing. Guns in the Ghetto (Morgan Heritage) - We use this groove for one of our songs and it's a joy to play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlRqagppNzo No No No (Dawn Penn) - Classic and timeless line Also - Ultra Stimulation (Finlay Quaye) - You can take your pick from this superb album
3. Fat bass and super funky drums.....divine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqyPAH4zqcY
4. These are quite early albums, so it looks like the reason for the low price is that the copyrights have passed their 50 year expiry thingy. Great value for money!
5. Thanks for the kind words folks. A couple of people have commented that the bass in 'Busy Like Signal' needs to be really boosted, as it's quite a dub style. In hindsight I agree. You know what it's like though - when they're mixing, it all sounds great through their monitors, then when you get it home you start to pick holes in it. I might try to get another mix of that song done - maybe a dub remix. I wonder if King Tubby is available? If not, I suppose we'll have to settle for Lee Scratch Perry
Sounds good mate! Have you checked out a band called By The Rivers? I saw them warm up for The Specials last year. They are getting a real good name for themselves at the min. From Leicester.
Thanks. No - not heard of By The Rivers - I'll check them out. They're not far from us, so maybe we could warm up for them
6. I play with mine on, but I have a thumbrest rather than a tugbar, so no issues with where to rest the thumb (see sig for pic of bass) I'm playing reggae, so play up near the neck anyway. If I were to play a different style, I may consider taking it off, or use it as an excuse to buy a new bass
7. We started this band (which I've just learned tonight is to be called "UJahm") in January, and it's lots of fun. This is the three-track demo which we've just done. Hope you enjoy it. http://soundcloud.com/ujahm-band Edut - I've changed the Soundcloud link now to one in the band's name rather than just my own.
8.
I've heard Beth Houghton and The Hooves Of Destiny on the radio a tonne of times and really enjoyed the songs.. but I was super disappointed with the live sound & performance. It was just nowhere near as good. Truly disappointed! Plus, I found there was such an air of "trying to be so different" in their performance that they ended up just looking a bit silly really. That's just my taste of course...
I agree - especially the girl in the animal mask who had no musical input as far as I could see
9. Thanks for that link and explanation - exactly what I'm after
10. Just listened to Willis Earl Beal, I really don't get it - bad singing over mediocre music
11. Do you have a budget for effects pedals? I'd say a good start would be to listen to any of the artists from this cd as it has a lot of the same chilled drum & bass style that you refer to with some JoJo Mayer and Nerve. When it comes to the more frantic Nerve stuff, I'd have a listen to Aphex Twin or Squarepusher. It's quite a departure from your normal fare - enjoy!
12. Ah - that shows how much I don't know. Thanks for the clarification. It's the neck profiles I'm interested in - what's the difference between C, U, V etc?
13. I've seen a lot of references to different types of neck profiles on Fenders, but I'm not sure what they mean. What's the difference between a C, D B etc. Oh, and what's a slab board? Is there a guide anywhere? Ta
14. I traded my Stingray (2EQ Rosewood) for a P ('78 Maple) ten years ago and have no regrets. The MM was superior in terms of build quality and had superb playability, but the tone was just not right for me. As soon as I played the P I knew I preferred it to the 'Ray. The P is heavier and there are gaps in the neck pocket, but it just felt and sounded right for me. I'd say that MMs are as popular as a bass can be. If it's not a P or a J.
15. I'm a bit late to vote I think, but great stuff. I especially like the solo (bit from 1:44ish) as your timing is spot on and lovely tone (coming from someone who generally does not like bass solos) Well done - you have a bright future ahead
16. Is it usual to have a concrete floor when you're upstairs?
17.
I like this a lot. So much soul !! The singing at the end gives me goosebumps.
I was at that gig! It looks like the crowd are not that into it, but we were not allowed to stand up! Bouncers told people off it they dared to stand. Halfway through the set, a group of 15 odd people started dancing, and when the bouncers tried to get them to sit, the entire crowd started booing them, then EVERYONE stood up in a fantastic gesture of solidarity. The bouncers had to give up, and the atmosphere was superb after that.
18. I'm in Bulwell. Sorry, but no, I'm happily on the valves at the moment. Good luck though Have an on me
