  1. Silver Sparkle Marlin Sidewinder (I won't hear a word said against it) My friends were starting a band and I was informed that I was to buy a bass and learn how to play. I obeyed.
  2. I've just seen the pictures of this, and that is some [i]serious[/i] damage! I was a bit shocked. I'm dubious that a repair to damage like that could result in the instrument being superior to the original. Also, as previously posted, it may have been repaired to make it structurally sound, but it seems to me that not much effort has gone into making it [i]look[/i] as good as possible, and it's the looks that are going to get interest from buyers online.

G.[/quote] I think you're talking about different things - the OP, as I read it, is talking about a bass player coming in do a session for a producer/band, as opposed to engineer/studio hire.
  4. My DI is a pedal so it will totally miss out all of the valve amp loveliness (although there's also a valve in the pedal) so I like to to mike up wherever possible to get the sound of my rig.

I think that there's something cool about playing a cheap non-brand bass (as long as it sounds good), as it says that you don't need to spends loads of money to sound great

There are lots of ways of varying the sound you get from your bass - your tone knob, eq, overdriving valves in your amp, muting etc. A pedal can vary the sound more drastically, but is essentially just another way to get the best sound for that piece of music. I don't tend to use effects myself, but then I'm playing 70's rock type stuff. If I was playing in an electronic outfit, I'd try all sorts of stuff to get different sounds. I think modern music needs to push boundaries, and it makes no sense to restrict yourself to a bass sound that's been a staple since the 50's
  18. The Fender Pino is another genuine signature bass, and I'll add Gary Willis too, just cos he's so great Anyone know what the rewards are for having a signature bass? I assume you get a couple on the house, but do you get paid too?

  20. I know what you mean Doddy. IMO a signature bass should be [i]their[/i] tried and tested bass, and it seems a bit rude and insincere to then change brands. Mark King: There was an article in BGM about how hard Ashdown had worked to get the perfect amp for the Mark King signature, only to read the next month that he's gone on tour with a TC rig! Flea: He went from playing a Stingray for years to suddenly bringing out a signature Modulus, then going down the vintage Jazz route. There are other players where I'm a bit cynical about their motives. Of course, everyone has the right to try new stuff and switch brands, but IMO putting out a signature bass should mean "this is my go-to bass, it's a major part of my sound and has helped make me the player I am today" rather than "I quite like this one at the moment"
  21. Play! Experiment! Try a smiley (mid scoop, bass & treble boost) EQ setting and then a frowny (mid up, bass & treble down) EQ setting* Play with fingers and a pick. Play with flats and rounds. Play a vintage bass and a modern one. Play a valve amp and a SS amp. Mute with palm/foam. Play near the bridge and near the neck. Play soft and hard. Some would argue that the material used for the nut, body, fretboard etc. has a significant effect on sound. Try many combinations of the above till you eventually (hopefully) hone in on your perfect tone. This will take several years and much money. *For eq, what sounds great in your bedroom at low volume may get totally lost in a band setting.

I needed to have a driver replaced for a CXL 110 and just dealt with the UK retailer (it was Chris May/Overwater in Carlisle, but not sure if they are still EA dealers, or indeed amp retailers) They seemed to have all of the spare parts needed to be able to repair any EA problems in the UK. Perhaps try a EA authorised dealer in the UK.
