1.
This must be a real contender for heaviest bass.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-bass-sale-/...=item4aa805b531
That's probably the most ridiculous bass I've ever seen. If it ever did do your back in, at least it could double up as a stretcher also, I like the way it comes with a 'custom case'. If ever a bass needed a custom case.....
2. I got rid about 10 years ago, so I'll need to try and dig out and scan some old photos
3.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=122874 DHA eq/di. I like mine.
+1 for the DHA Mine is a different DHA pedal with a DI built in (VT1 EQ bass), but is very good quality for both recording and gigging
4. One of the three basses I ever owned was a mid 80's Stingray. I was told that this was an 83, but it was a 2EQ EBMM (white with black scratchplate) - when was the transition from pre to post EB? Anyway, it was my first 'real' bass - beautifully built and a lovely player - nice bit of birdseye in the neck, too. I never got on with the tone, however. Found my soul mate in a P ... (run for cover) In hindsight, I was young and inexperienced - it's possible I wasn't twiddling the knobs the right way
5. Just a thought - with valve amps, the US tend to use 6550s and UK tend to use KT88s - could this be a contributing factor when it comes to tone difference? Makes sense to me. My amp was US made, complete with 6550s, but I put in some KT88s (plus bias tweaking) and I definitely prefer the richer tone and increased headroom. Whether it's US v British tone, I'm not sure!
6.
That's the way it reads to me, too. If you're confident/knowledgeable enough to start disconnecting speakers etc. to do 'controlled experiments', then how could you do such a stupid thing? Anyway, hindsight etc. Hope it's cheap and painless
7. Hey Big John - was a pleasure to bump into you last night. The recordings are sounding great - I'll be sure to come and see you when you play the Greyhound (as long as it's not the same day our baby's born! Priorities and all that)
8. Fun gig tonight. There was a very up for it crowd, and a very enthusiastic soundguy who opted to mike up my amp rather than DI - horray and I met another BCer - they're everywhere!
9.
I like that Precision, what is it a 1977??
Cheers, it's a '78 (was white, stripped by previous owner)
10.
My custom 21 string bass weighs in at 47.46 lbs
You sure you're not holding your bass vertically? those are frets, not strings
11. You the man Mr F, Stupidly, I had always thought that the master volume was at the very end of the chain. That makes sense, and also explains why I love my 100w amp so much! Cheers
12. I'm finding this very interesting and informative. Sorry if it's deviating from the OP, but I have another question: If you have a signal which is getting progressively dirtier after driving the pre and power sections, why is it not possible to cut the volume with the master volume and still achieve the same dirty tone? Is this because it's also necessary to 'open up' the power valves (with master volume) to achieve the power amp drive? Basically I'm unsure as to the relationship between the master volume and the power section.
13.
Is this destined for a Wayne-TM paint job?
What's a Wayne-TM paint job? Hopefully nothing to do with the Zulu-inspired paint job on the TM Stevens sig?
14. Nottingham-based guys as follows: Valves: John Chambers (Champ Electronics) http://www.chambonino.com/ Solid State: John Wood (his contact details are on the above website homepage) If it's hybred, I guess contact one of them to see who would be best suited to sort you out. I can vouch for JC, and am one of the many testimonials on his site. Regarding JW, see below quote from JC's site: "I don't personally enjoy working on solid state equipment, although I am very capable of doing that type of work. Really, I'm a valve man! (or should that be tube man?) However, my friend in Nottingham, John Wood, does like to get involved with transistors and such-like. He also carries out a lot of work re-winding or building transformers from new. In fact, I am one of his best customers when I don't have time to build a new transformer myself!" Hope this helps
15. Ah, ok So no matter how much signal you pump into the little rascal, it will 'limit' the signal that goes into the power amp? How annoying. Can it be bypassed, or can you 'raise the ceiling' a bit?
16. I'm by no means an expert, but my theory is as follows: The single volume control you mention acts as the 'master volume' ie only controls the output volume The input is set at an optimum level. The input of your bass, therefore, is of crucial importance as you'd need to crank your bass volume to overdrive the preamp. Also, I find that the real grit comes from driving both pre and power amps, so you may well need to turn both the bass and amp up. I'd liken it to a stereo, where there is no gain control, and the input stage is set to 'average CD output' level, and the volume control is for output only. I could be wrong, and won't be surprised if the more techie types come up with a more convincing theory!
17. I don't feel I need five. I understand it's about more than getting to those lower notes, it's also about the ease of access to the notes you want all the way up the fretboard. When reading a similar thread in the past, I was struck by the words of the wise and diplomatic BurritoBass, something along the lines of "I like the limitations that four strings place on your playing"
18.
I don't think 99% of people would know if you were playing a Jazz or a Ray. I do think however that at least 75% of people will think the band sounds better as a whole if the gear's right, especially with bass where a bad tone will make the band sound either thin or muddy.
+1
19. Was browsing the web and came across myself on You Tube! I feel famous and defiled at the same time. It was a first and last gig - great singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEa_wbBBIgU...feature=related
20.
First one, prearloid too Las Vegas, C&W for me. But before that you need to straighten out the bridge and pickups which have gone a bit skewiff
+1 and I'm not a fan of the frets, either ...I'll get me coat
21.
I think my T-40 weighs about 11lb or so. I don't actually like basses that are too light as they make me stoop!
How would a light bass make you stoop?
22. I just got silence when clicking on it - maybe I'm doing something wrong? Feedback so far - everything is WAY too low in the mix
23. Great song, Great video. Average overall = Great
24. What about "New Wave Pop"?
25. Hi, Sounds good - nice one. It's a pretty good mix instrumentally, and a good song. I find the vocals a bit quiet in the mix, perhaps this is on purpose?
