A crack can zig zag a bit along (and slightly across) the grain. Like the other posters, it looks like the truss rod is pushing on the skunk strip (a new term to me, thanks Nigel) You could get a new neck, but resale would plummet, so I'd go for the refund. note - I'm not a luthier, but work with wood every day and know it intimately. Well.....not THAT intimately!

Ouch! I notice the word 'had' Did the weight adversely affect the resale value? I sometimes wonder about that with mine. When I bought it, I didn't even think to consider the weight, I just picked it up, played it, loved it and bought it.

I was flicking through an old BGM and was reading about the Yamaha BB1024x, which apparently weighs 12kg/26lb (I assume it should be 12lbs, either that or the bridge is made from dark matter) Mine (78P) is a healthy 11ish lbs - hefty, but feels fine to me. No back problems yet after ten years, but I'm 15st and 6'1" myself, so maybe we're a good match. Anyone play a real backbreaker? note: I am aware that some people have had real problems with their backs due to heavy instruments, and I don't mean to make light of your pain (npi)

If anyone fancies a bit of glam rock, check us out tomorrow night. It's a good live venue and always has a good atmosphere. Cheers, http://greyhoundbeeston.co.uk/Greyhound/Gig_Guide.html
Me rocking the EBS HD350 & Neo 212 at a gig last weekend! Great rig.
How did the gig go? The Maze is a good venue, but I couldn't make it. I would be interested in coming to check out your pedal madness in future.

If I were ever to convert to the wonky side, a Super J would be the one. What a stunner!
I really love Squarepusher, but not really for his bass playing as much as his music that he produces. That said he's clearly a good player!
+1 Not too fond of his bass tone, but musically I love almost everything he does, ever since I happened upon the 'Budakhan Mindphone' ep in '99. He's the only artist where I make the effort to buy all of his new releases. Great live too From a bass player's perspective, an interesting track is 'The Modern Bass Guitar' from the album 'Hello Everything' - I think it's bass guitar given the mental midi Squarepusher treatment, and the results are superb imo He produces truly original music - a rare thing these days

I've never been a fan of the 'mwah' of the fretless, but like some other aspects: For spaced out sliding harmonics, something a bit different, I like this clip from a fellow BCer; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMFQGYcnL-I...player_embedded I also like the percussive funkiness that the decreased sustain of a fretless can help provide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F4j2SacgN4 Gary Willis is the daddy btw - I saw Alain Caron playing with Mike Stern a few years back, and thoroughly enjoyed his playing

Secondhand Warwick Prices - Wtf Is Going On??
Roland Rock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I think aesthetics are very important to many people. I have no doubt they are great instruments, and beautiful to many. Personally, however, I don't like the look of 'modern' looking basses (except for a perverse attraction towards the Pedulla Buzz). The only Warwicks I've seen that I like the look of are the Star and the Jack Bruce EB3 one, and even then I'd prefer the Gibson versions. I know it's illogical to choose form over function, but that's human nature sometimes. edit: remembered another one I like - the Fortress Flashback -
Been appreciating the Specials' Horace Panter today

I wasn't being lazy - somehow my original search (pre posting) brought up a page where an existing bass was refinished in distressed Olympic White. Must have gotten confused. Thanks for the clarification.

I notice from his Resume that he's an inventor too.

That's great! I especially like it when he tries to 'diss' the judges through the medium of Crap Rap at the end

I've had my '78 for ten years. It weighs 11.5 lbs It has a 1.5mm gap in the neck pocket (I know it's 1.5mm, as I keep a 1.5mm plectrum there for safekeeping) It has a pretty low output from the pickup. Despite all this, I fell in love with it at first play, traded in my 83 Stingray, and never regretted it for a second. It keeps its tune, is a wonderful player and has a gorgeous tone.

Cool - PM me your details and I'll send them off
Books won't help. You've got to listen to as much of the real thing as you can.
+1 It's all about feel. The album 'Marcus Garvey' by Burning Spear is a superb masterclass in reggae rhythm sections

Interesting gig tonight. It was my first with this band (I was recently brought in as a replacement bass player) - Glam Rock stuff. We had a practice on Monday to load up with Bowie, T Rex, Sweet & Slade mojo, then gig this evening (smallish pub). Lineup is drums, bass, lead guitar and singer who plays acoustic guitar when necessary. Turned up for the gig to learn that the guitarist is projectile vomiting at home, but we're going to do the gig anyway! Some hasty setlist reshuffling, quick soundcheck, on with the sequins and onto stage. The fun bit for me was that I had to fill out the sound considerably, so was given free reign to 'stretch my legs' and play some busier stuff without it interfering with the groove. There were some slightly baron moments, but no train wrecks and we ended up doing two encores! The landlord was happy, and we got to split the cash three ways! Super. Maybe I'll buy the guitarist some grapes or something
We played a big wedding in a nice venue that had a sound limiter. Grrrrrr. A quick explanation for those that aren't familiar with this evil invention... you plug all your gear into to specified (in this case red) power sockets which are controlled by a decibel metre. When you go over 90db, BOOM, all the power is turned off. Yeah, really great for your kit! Anyone else had trouble with these? The ambient noise in the place was around 83-84 decibels and this was just with people chatting, kids playing and people walking on a wooden floor! We did our best to be as quiet as we could but the drummer completely unmiked (and he doesn't hit that hard) was hitting 90 db. Thankfully we knew some of the guys at the wedding who kindly shimmied up some rafters and unplugged it after it killed everything during the 4th song. The hole atmosphere of the place just came alive then!
Yes - We played the Merchant Adventurers' hall in York, which has one of these. A jazz-funk band booked for a wake! The device cut the power to the band as soon as the drums kicked in at soundcheck. It was promptly unplugged.

I'm going to defend the lowly Marlin Sidewinder! I picked up my silver Sidewinder along with a cheap 1x15 amp (Cougar) for £200 The output was fine, the tone lacked a bit of definition and character, but was acceptable, and the action was quite high, but it was a great starter bass. I managed to practice, gig and even record with it for about three years. Maybe I lucked out with a good example

Thanks for that. The second one - was that meant to be one where he plays/talks about muting? It's an interesting interview anyway. I didn't know he played on 'We can work it out". I was listening to the Stevie Wonder album 'Signed, Sealed Delivered' yesterday, and thinking that that bass playing was not typically Jamerson - now I know why!
