1. They fit fine on my 78 P
2.
We played a big wedding in a nice venue that had a sound limiter. Grrrrrr. A quick explanation for those that aren't familiar with this evil invention... you plug all your gear into to specified (in this case red) power sockets which are controlled by a decibel metre. When you go over 90db, BOOM, all the power is turned off. Yeah, really great for your kit! Anyone else had trouble with these? The ambient noise in the place was around 83-84 decibels and this was just with people chatting, kids playing and people walking on a wooden floor! We did our best to be as quiet as we could but the drummer completely unmiked (and he doesn't hit that hard) was hitting 90 db. Thankfully we knew some of the guys at the wedding who kindly shimmied up some rafters and unplugged it after it killed everything during the 4th song. The hole atmosphere of the place just came alive then!
Yes - We played the Merchant Adventurers' hall in York, which has one of these. A jazz-funk band booked for a wake! The device cut the power to the band as soon as the drums kicked in at soundcheck. It was promptly unplugged.
3. Hey - I'm not into 5 stringers, but have a 'great price' bump on me.
4. I'm going to defend the lowly Marlin Sidewinder! I picked up my silver Sidewinder along with a cheap 1x15 amp (Cougar) for £200 The output was fine, the tone lacked a bit of definition and character, but was acceptable, and the action was quite high, but it was a great starter bass. I managed to practice, gig and even record with it for about three years. Maybe I lucked out with a good example
5. Thanks for that. The second one - was that meant to be one where he plays/talks about muting? It's an interesting interview anyway. I didn't know he played on 'We can work it out". I was listening to the Stevie Wonder album 'Signed, Sealed Delivered' yesterday, and thinking that that bass playing was not typically Jamerson - now I know why!
6. Yes, I think I'll only be picking when muted, as fingerstyle when muted (when palm muting anyway) sounds way too muffled imo The picking thing is a whole new skill that I need to work on, as I've been exclusively fingerstyle since the start, but that's another thread for the technique section
7. Thanks - I'll collect a variety of sponges and play around. Where's an old sponge mousemat when you need one? The e-Bay one looks good and ticks many boxes too - thanks. The £100 job mentioned on the other thread will be a last resort! Not too discrete either
8. I'm guessing that Burrito will be able to help here, but I'm open to all advice. I'm really getting into the muted, picked sound from a lot of 60's music e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlHMpOypzFg (Pretty sure this was Carol Kaye) I'd like to be able to mute/demute the strings between songs at gigs. I play a 78 P Bass with flats and a bridge cover. I've dabbled with palm muting, and it's gone ok. Perhaps I'm too lazy to become proficient at it, but I can't help thinking that there might be better, more versatile way. After all, Jamerson and Babbett use/d mutes, and no-one accuses them of being lazy or of taking the easy way out! It goes without saying that I don't want to drill any holes in the bass, and for shallow reasons, I'd prefer to keep the bridge cover on if possibles, because I think it looks cool.
9. Here's my one and only bass. '78 US Original white paint stripped by a previous owner 11.5 lbs of pure tone!
10. Hi, Sorry, I got PM'd almost immediately so it's been taken RR
11. I have a pair of Tung Sol 6SN7 GT (made in USA) valves up for grabs They've had little use; I swapped them for 6SL7s which are quite a bit louder. Lovely tone, just too quiet for me, but maybe ok for you if you have a B15 or similar that you use for recording
12.
I had a Marlin Sidewinder strat type. It looked nice, but sounded awful!
Still got mine, it ended up being painted a garish Hawaiian Shirt theme
13. When I had EA stuff, one of the handles split open, so the dealer kindly send me a couple of spares. The Rig has long gone but I found a spare, unused handle in the loft the other day. It was from the EA iAmp 350 Combo, but it'll do for anything Black Leather, Red Stitching, internal reinforcing metal strip, two screwholes on each side (no screws included)
14. Off the top of my head: Lemon Song - Led Zeppelin Revolution will not be Televised - Gill Scott Heron Little Bit of Love - Free Boogie on Reggae Woman - Stevie Wonder (not even bass guitar!) Give up the Funk (Tear the roof off the sucker) - Parliament
15.
I've stuck some Steve Harris Sig flatwound Rotos on my bass, they sound fantastic. I expect I only paid a little extra for them as they've got his name on it. I have a feeling they're only normal roto flats with his logo on the box but I'm pleased with how they sound.
+1 I love the Steve Harris flats. I don't know if it's the 'custom guage', but something about them suits me down to the ground, and I'm not even a Maiden fan!
16.
I remember seeing that Jauqo XIIXXIIVIIIXXIIXVVV or whatever his bloody name is playing one in a youtube video. I can't believe it's a $6000 bass when it looks like that, and sounds like that and has EMG HZ pickups in it! They're fantastic in a Spector Rebop but I'd ask for more from a boutique bass! And I still can't work out what it is about the bass that is supposed to make $6000 look like a reasonable price to the customer.
Yep, they're crazy money - there's all sorts of bumph about 'floating neck', bridge cover milled from a solid piece of aliminium etc. but I totally take your point that that price doesn't seem justified. It would be a "lottery win bass" Apparently there is a choice of pickups now, but not sure of details. Aesthetically, obviously not to your taste but to me it's the most beautiful bass I've ever seen, and has been since I first saw it 4 odd years ago.
17. I fell in love with the Henman B4 as soon as I saw it. Lots of money and not too many about. It doesn't have a fancy exotic wood top, but is made with mahogany /sapele.
18. They don't give much info on it; I'd rather know know much it weighs instead of being told it's a passive bass! I think it's stunning, but wouldn't have the nerve to gig it. Better looking than the "ex Greg Lake" one that's been on e-bay for donkeys' years for 10k
19. I wonder how much they would cost compared to the separate Terror head and Smart Power Cab? I'd prefer the look and flexibility of the separates unless there was a significant price difference
20. Don't worry, you're not a freak - I like it too I think it would be a lot nicer without that big scoop taken out of the scratchplate near the neck.
21. I'm playing in a tribute band at the moment and at first I was trying really hard to get the basslines spot on as per the original recorded version. Then you hear a live album version and it can be completely different! Now I tend to play with the original sprit/style but add my own flourishes/simplifications where I deem appropriate. I think it has a lot to do with the other musicians in the band; e.g. the drummer may play with a slightly different feel to the original version, so you play something that's more in keeping with what's happening in the moment.
22. King Tubby Finlay Quaye I'm on a Reggae tip
23. Old fashioned customer service - brilliant. Sounds like they really care about the customer and the product. I have a good local place, but if I can't get what I'm after there, I'll go to WV
24. He's obviously an incredibly creative guy, and these instruments are a breath of fresh air in the market. As much as I love the stunning finishes and gorgeous woods (especially the Bokote fingerboard), as playing instrument, I prefer the look of a Burns or Vintage P Bass.
