1. Yes, I think I'll only be picking when muted, as fingerstyle when muted (when palm muting anyway) sounds way too muffled imo The picking thing is a whole new skill that I need to work on, as I've been exclusively fingerstyle since the start, but that's another thread for the technique section
2. Thanks - I'll collect a variety of sponges and play around. Where's an old sponge mousemat when you need one? The e-Bay one looks good and ticks many boxes too - thanks. The £100 job mentioned on the other thread will be a last resort! Not too discrete either
3. I'm guessing that Burrito will be able to help here, but I'm open to all advice. I'm really getting into the muted, picked sound from a lot of 60's music e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlHMpOypzFg (Pretty sure this was Carol Kaye) I'd like to be able to mute/demute the strings between songs at gigs. I play a 78 P Bass with flats and a bridge cover. I've dabbled with palm muting, and it's gone ok. Perhaps I'm too lazy to become proficient at it, but I can't help thinking that there might be better, more versatile way. After all, Jamerson and Babbett use/d mutes, and no-one accuses them of being lazy or of taking the easy way out! It goes without saying that I don't want to drill any holes in the bass, and for shallow reasons, I'd prefer to keep the bridge cover on if possibles, because I think it looks cool.
4. Here's my one and only bass. '78 US Original white paint stripped by a previous owner 11.5 lbs of pure tone!
5. Hi, Sorry, I got PM'd almost immediately so it's been taken RR
6. I have a pair of Tung Sol 6SN7 GT (made in USA) valves up for grabs They've had little use; I swapped them for 6SL7s which are quite a bit louder. Lovely tone, just too quiet for me, but maybe ok for you if you have a B15 or similar that you use for recording
7.
I had a Marlin Sidewinder strat type. It looked nice, but sounded awful!
Still got mine, it ended up being painted a garish Hawaiian Shirt theme
8. When I had EA stuff, one of the handles split open, so the dealer kindly send me a couple of spares. The Rig has long gone but I found a spare, unused handle in the loft the other day. It was from the EA iAmp 350 Combo, but it'll do for anything Black Leather, Red Stitching, internal reinforcing metal strip, two screwholes on each side (no screws included)
9. Off the top of my head: Lemon Song - Led Zeppelin Revolution will not be Televised - Gill Scott Heron Little Bit of Love - Free Boogie on Reggae Woman - Stevie Wonder (not even bass guitar!) Give up the Funk (Tear the roof off the sucker) - Parliament
10.
I've stuck some Steve Harris Sig flatwound Rotos on my bass, they sound fantastic. I expect I only paid a little extra for them as they've got his name on it. I have a feeling they're only normal roto flats with his logo on the box but I'm pleased with how they sound.
+1 I love the Steve Harris flats. I don't know if it's the 'custom guage', but something about them suits me down to the ground, and I'm not even a Maiden fan!
11.
I remember seeing that Jauqo XIIXXIIVIIIXXIIXVVV or whatever his bloody name is playing one in a youtube video. I can't believe it's a $6000 bass when it looks like that, and sounds like that and has EMG HZ pickups in it! They're fantastic in a Spector Rebop but I'd ask for more from a boutique bass! And I still can't work out what it is about the bass that is supposed to make $6000 look like a reasonable price to the customer.
Yep, they're crazy money - there's all sorts of bumph about 'floating neck', bridge cover milled from a solid piece of aliminium etc. but I totally take your point that that price doesn't seem justified. It would be a "lottery win bass" Apparently there is a choice of pickups now, but not sure of details. Aesthetically, obviously not to your taste but to me it's the most beautiful bass I've ever seen, and has been since I first saw it 4 odd years ago.
12. I fell in love with the Henman B4 as soon as I saw it. Lots of money and not too many about. It doesn't have a fancy exotic wood top, but is made with mahogany /sapele.
13. They don't give much info on it; I'd rather know know much it weighs instead of being told it's a passive bass! I think it's stunning, but wouldn't have the nerve to gig it. Better looking than the "ex Greg Lake" one that's been on e-bay for donkeys' years for 10k
14. I wonder how much they would cost compared to the separate Terror head and Smart Power Cab? I'd prefer the look and flexibility of the separates unless there was a significant price difference
15. Don't worry, you're not a freak - I like it too I think it would be a lot nicer without that big scoop taken out of the scratchplate near the neck.
16. I'm playing in a tribute band at the moment and at first I was trying really hard to get the basslines spot on as per the original recorded version. Then you hear a live album version and it can be completely different! Now I tend to play with the original sprit/style but add my own flourishes/simplifications where I deem appropriate. I think it has a lot to do with the other musicians in the band; e.g. the drummer may play with a slightly different feel to the original version, so you play something that's more in keeping with what's happening in the moment.
17. King Tubby Finlay Quaye I'm on a Reggae tip
18. Old fashioned customer service - brilliant. Sounds like they really care about the customer and the product. I have a good local place, but if I can't get what I'm after there, I'll go to WV
19. He's obviously an incredibly creative guy, and these instruments are a breath of fresh air in the market. As much as I love the stunning finishes and gorgeous woods (especially the Bokote fingerboard), as playing instrument, I prefer the look of a Burns or Vintage P Bass.
20. Hi Sam, My immediate reaction was to recommend pre-disco Kool & the Gang or Fatback Band, but they might be too much like full on jazzy funk. Maybe Gil Scott Heron http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b2F-XX0Ol0 or Labie Siffre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DByyEuYEvc
21. ThomBM, Agreed that a cheap, giggable head would be good - Not sure that a giggable all-valve head could come in at that price point
22.
Winding on the OT for a line out/DI so it gets the power stage goodness. 2xKT88 power section, so it is a ~100w and will drive, but with KT88 flavour (this is doable, but unusual, make a little market space for yourself there)
The EBS T90 (6550s rather than KT88s but a reasonable comparison) didn't really take off in the UK, I think people think 90W is too quiet. More on: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry955888 Like others on that thread, I think it's plenty with the right cab. Perhaps that's something that would need to be emphasised in the marketing material
23. Hi, Sounds exciting! As a valve amp user, the following things would be on my wish list: -Simple controls on the front i.e. Gain, Bass, Mid, Treble & Master -On the back: The usual outputs/power lead & Ohm selector. I would prefer a balanced XLR on mine. Also, I read somewhere about a Markbass all valve head having some very clever functions where you can adjust the bias yourself, negating the need for matched power valves (I'm not technical as you can tell, and am sure I'll be corrected on the details of this, but it was something that struck me as desirable and practical) -Simple aesthetics, preferably retro Things I wouldn't like to see: -Complicated or slidey EQ section -Busy aesthetics In terms of sound, personally I like a relatively low gain amp, but want a bit of grit when I push it. Watts, 200w seems to be the crowd pleaser - loud enough for most gigs but not as back/bank breaking as a 3/400 watter
24. Cheers, I just spotted one on EBay for £105. I won't get a chance to try one out, but could be worth the punt
