1. Beautiful and very tasteful. I would never have thought of a clear scratchplate, but it works really well.
2.
I am just loving this one at the mo. Elvis Costello Pump it Up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUZseMxE6P4
That's great - brilliant song and cool bass playing & tone too
3. 'Superjam' by Flow Dynamics sample on http://www.amazon.co.uk/Superjam-Flow-Dyna...x/dp/B001ERD14U
4. Sounds just the ticket. Probably a good job it's not out for a while; I need time to save up and figure out where it's going to live Many thanks for your help
5. Thanks, I'll check them out. I'm hoping that there will be a cloth retro look available. In your opinion, would a cab bigger than my current one help significantly in the volume stakes?
6. Steve Harris RS flats have a different colour on each end (Red and Blue to reflect Steve's West Ham allegiance) Good job I have a bridge cover to hide one end
7. A bit more research leads me to believe that these are discontinued, and second hand ones are like hen's teeth.
8.
i think i look at bands collectively as opposed to individuals each playing an instrument. although i do have a very prejudiced rule - any bass player that wears a hat on stage means i refuse to watch their band or even talk to them. thats my only rule, its as simple as that.
Oh Dear - does that include a sequined Santa hat?
9. Hi, I currently have a custom 100w all valve head running into a 2x10 cab (I think rated at 600w) The volume is just about enough for gigging, but I could do with a bit more in reserve. Looking at the BF website, the vintage looks perfect - recommended for heads as little as 100w, recommended for valve heads, lightweight and with a retro cloth grille too! My question is, how much more volume would the BF Vintage setup get compared to my current setup? If you need to know about EQ, it's a simple bass, mid & treble on the amp, but I also play through a DHA VT1EQ preamp pedal which boosts the bass' signal and has a bit more EQ tweaking ability. I play a 70's P bass thanks
10.
For my first bass i bought an Encore PK-20 p bass, brand new on ebay for £60. Now im upgrading and cant decide what bass to get. Should i get the Chase for £130? Squier jazz for £150? Or the Westfield MM for £160?
That Chase is quite a looker - you tried it out? I could do with a cheap backup bass, and that could be a contender. The other I was looking at was the Aria DMB380 http://www.ariausa.com/basses/dmb380.html maybe this could be of interest to you too
11.
The headstock ruins it for me I'm afraid. Best of luck though, my moneys on this though:
My thoughts exactly. The sock gets points for being bonkers. Looks like you're well in the lead though - good luck.
12.
When playing a gig, with other bands on the bill, the main thing that gets my back up to be honest is the lack of support other bands show each other.......We make an effort to listen to the other bands sets, clap and chear, and always stay to the end.
I seem to be the only person in our band who thinks that that's proper etiquette. The others will go off for food/sit elsewhere. Part of it is that now that I have kids, I rarely get to go and see other bands, so am glad to watch anything, even mediocrity!
13. My 78 precision is lovely but I wish the output signal was a bit stronger
14. When going to see other bands play, or if there are other bands on the same bill as you, what are you thinking when you watch them? One guy in my band has a really annoying habit of slagging the other bands off while they're playing, sometimes really obviously with his body language. I find it rude and embarassing. So what do you think/do when you watch a band? I'm going to be totally honest and let you know what creeps into my thoughts: 1: I'm very polite, and will constructively analyse the bass playing/band performance, and give positive feedback when chatting to the band afterwards, even if I thought they were a bit rubbish. Does that make me two faced? 2: I'll focus on the bass player and compare their standard to my own. If I feel they're better than me, I'll sit back and enjoy the show. If I feel they're not as good as me, a bit of smugness creeps in. I'm not proud of this, and generally regard myself as a nice person, but that's how it is. What goes through your heads?
15. Bass - A silver sparkle Marlin Sidewinder - Eventually, an artist friend painted it a hawiian shirt theme. Amp - Cougar 1x15 Combo Pretty basic stuff, but ideal for learning
16. When you see gigging and practicing as a chore
17. JJ is prob my favourite bassist. I followed the link just in case it meant the East coast of the UK Lincolnshire could do with a few world class acts!
18. Wow, memories of me as a 15 year old stagediver at a NoMeansNo gig. I wasn't a bass player back then, so didn't appreciate the playing. Will def revisit and rediscover
19. If you still need it, PM me and I may be able to help. I'm not a luthier, but am pretty experienced in woodworking
20. I'll def check these guys out more. Thanks
21.
Can you clarify! That looks like a nice SS rig... what's to put you off SS for life?
Sorry, maybe that was a bit harsh! The rig was good in some ways ie portable, all the features I needed. The tone I got from it was quite nice at low volumes but I found it to be slightly clinical and lacking in character when pushed to gigging levels. It's entirely possible that I wasn't tweaking the EQ section to its full potential, I think it was a bit too complicated for me. Also, I never really felt that it was as loud as they claimed it should be. I suppose it's about feeling your way through different types till you find the one best suited to you - I definitely love the simplicity and tone of a valve amp.
22. Cheers BB You have a nice collection. I like the foam on the bridge idea, and have been thinking about that myself. I suppose I need to play around a bit to get the right level of muting, and ideally I want to be able to foam/defoam mid set.
23. Have a look at Rees - these are around 7lb I haven't played one, but they got a good review in BGM http://rees-electric-guitars.com/
24. My old 'mini stack'. It was enough to put me off ss for life!
25. The 50 watts couldn't compete with our hard-hitting drummer, so John's mod to fixed bias was essential. In retrospect, I think that Paul from Red Iron is first and foremost a high-gain guitar type of guy. Ultimately he made a 50w amp when I asked for a 100w one. No financial comp on anything. To be honest I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to complaining.
