Genzler Amplification Magellan 800 - now released!
Roland Rock replied to Ghost_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
OK, so we have had two seriously acknowledged industry experts say the same thing. Both their brands are seriously respected. HOW do us Luddites find out which amps ARE NOT pulling this full power at half volume on the rotaries. These should be empirical facts so surely you guys can name the companies that do this, without fear of being accused of competetive bias? Your comments have left me confused and somewhat disappointed in some companies being a bit shy with the truth.
Glockenklang have the most 'honest' volume ramping I've come across - very even increase in volume from 1 right through to 10 -

About 19 minutes into the programme, playing a crazy acoustic bass lent to me by kind BCer Len Derby: http://nottstv.com/programmes/the-630-show/?videoId=4736057797001

I've seen something I really want, so have decided to put my amps on sale. This sale is for the superb Avalon U5. I bought this as I recorded through one and fell in love with the tone. It is commonly used as high end DI in recording studios, but I've been using it as a preamp/DI connected to a power amp for an amazing bass rig. It comes in a Peli Case 1450 case - a thing of beauty in itself, it is shockproof, waterproof, and even equalises pressure on aircraft. It fits the U5 perfectly. These cost around £90 From the website: SONIC EXCELLENCE The Avalon U5 Pure Class A instrument DI & preamplifier is the most powerful direct box available today. Designed to optimize absolute signal integrity and musical performance, the U5 includes many features and sonic excellence unequaled by lesser designs. The U5 is ideal for bass guitar and acoustic instruments, electric guitars, keyboards, synthesizers and low output pickups. Features include state-of-the-art, high input impedance input stage for zero load effect on sensitive pickups and keyboards, 100% discrete, Pure Class A signal amplifiers, practical user features and rugged hardware designed to deliver true high performance audio for many years. DESIGNED FOR DEEP & CONTROLLED BASS Avalon U5 DI-preamps have been in use around the world since 1995. They have found their way into the world's leading musicians rigs and recording sessions and been featured on thousands of the best selling (and sounding) albums and live performances. MINIMUM SIGNAL PATH DESIGN The U5 includes a variable gain Class A preamplifier to boost low level pickup signals and a high level speaker input for capturing the live sound of the instruments amplifier. Six passive tone-EQ curves are also included to enhance a variety of acoustic and electric instruments. A high-cut switch eliminates unwanted acoustic pickup and high frequency noise, while a headphone monitor amp has been included for personal listening. Twin DC coupled Class A output amplifiers drive both low level microphone preamp inputs and high level +4dB inputs for direct to tape recording or processing. The active-to-thru switch selects either the instrument input directly or sends the boosted-equalized signal to the amplifier via the front panel jack. A ground isolation switch eliminates any possible earth loop or AC buzz problems with complete safety. Not for me. I had to Google Gary Jarman too. This exerpt from Wikipedia made me chuckle: "In 2009, on very short notice, he played bass with Franz Ferdinand during two of their shows supporting Green Day when bassist Bob Hardy forgot about a wedding he had been invited to"

Good gig last night at Nottingham Contemporary: Stand-in drummer mentally going over the changes: Crowd were great, and band on good form: Mark didn't miss a beat: I don't remember it being that light! Singing/playing/lollipop multitasker: Great audience, nice shot:

I agree with many on your list, but top of the list by a country mile is basses worn high up.
If you think a 5 string bass can't be recorded successfully or well, you'd better tell Nathan East. Or maybe you should get a better engineer.
Who posted that? Can't see it
The coolest bass is a Thunderbird. But they are, for me, the most uncomfortable basses ever made so I don`t play one.
Style and practicality seldom go hand in hand
What's the venue? Looks like a school hall! (Nothing wrong with that mind, I've played a few.)
It's the Café bar at Nottingham Contemporary (primarily an art gallery) -

Our setup for tonight's gig - bit bored while waiting to souncheck PA monitors are Turbosound, and subs/boxes on sticks are RCF. Usually sounds fine here. The soundguy is nice enough. It's all about a mutual respect - appreciating what the other needs to get done. I say that now, but will probably post calling him a twat in ten minutes -
Sorry to hear about the amp JJ are very good. I've had a pair in my 100 amp for years and they're still going strong.

I'll stick my neck out and say that no coffee table/exotic topped bass can be cool. Beautiful, elegant, masterpiece maybe, but cool? No.
-
It's all to do with associations; I used to associate Steinberger Cricket bats with cheesy 80s acts, and thought they were very uncool. Then I discovered Robbie Shakespeare played one, and suddenly they are ultra cool. How shallow
Clearly your tuners are 1:1 ratio Aren't normal ones anything around 20:1? That's 20 turns of the button per complete rotation of the capstan. Times 2 or 3? That's quite a lot of winding.
...but if it's once a year, I can cope

Ummmmm... Gaffer tape -
iirc his hair and sideburns finally got so rediculous that he officially turned into a werewolf, was captured, and released into the wild in Finland.
