1. A Big Al 5 was on my bucket list. One of my favourite looking basses ever
2. As far as I'm aware, nitro paint is basically nitro lacquer with pigment added, and it will polish up as well as neat lacquer. In my experience, 600 grit is course for getting a glossy finish, but not so course that you see swirls under a sprayed finish, Also, it's good to have a practice with the nitro paint. It dries really quickly, and you need to get the air:paint ratio spot on for a good finish. It can dry before it hits the surface!
3. Or, to be a bit less facecious, Tony Benn (RIP) regularly did talks at Glastonbury which were very popular. People enjoy it, so why be confined by labels.
4. Toilets at a Festival? WTF? They are not musicians!! 😉 If it adds value/fulfils a need, do it.
5. Current favourites: -Bo0tsy -Stevie Wonder's left hand -Aston FMB -Father Funk's remix basslines (all done in Ableton) -Chuck Rainey -Andy Frazer -John Paul Jones -Jerry Jemmott -Ron Carter -Carol Kaye
6.
Bad news Chris. My family have worked out that I'm even grumpier than normal if I don't take some sort of musical instrument on holiday with me. My recently acquired cheapo uke bass came to Anglesey last week. Just the job, sitting on the cliffs trying to tempt the Dolphins with music. None came. If you, or any of your posse, are Derby way before Sunday you're very welcome to borrow it. It takes up little room.
What a gent, Neil, thanks 😊 Alas I won't be in the area, and thinking about it, I'm not sure what opportunities I'll have to play, what with being stuck in a wet tent with two constantly arguing young kids. I'd be tempted to use it as a head mallet 😉
7. A good solution to the stability issue is to make a kind of 'posh ply' where you laminate four layers of veneer together with alternating grain directions. The result is really strong.
8. Another matt finish here. Fingerprints not an issue:
9. Lovely - Huge fan of these basses. Good luck with the sale
10. Dislikes, but never say never: -Strangely, I like flamed maple, but can't stand quilted maple. -Non-angled headstocks -Square neck heels -Gold hardware -Oval pickups -Too many knobs (eg Xotic J type) -I don't mind a J style with no metal control plate, if it is done well (eg Celinder J Update) but when the scratchplate hasn't even been modified to suit, it looks lazy and wrong (eg Alleva Coppolo) Tastes change though - my list would have been a bit different a couple of years ago.
11. We're off to Dawlish on Sunday. I would pack the bass, but undoubtedly Mrs RR will fill every conceivable space in the car with stuff we 'need' 😡😁
12. Definitely a common thing! I've played scores multi-band gigs, and I can only think of one time where there wasn't some sort of gear share between bands.
13. I love a good DJ set. These days it's much more than playing other people's records. The DJ will 'curate' (sorry Seashell) a load of songs, some more familiar than others, and can remix them with badass squelchy synth basslines and dancy beats (are you wincing yet Bilbo?). The skill is getting the right songs, with the right feel of remix, in the right order, mixed (ie blended together) in fluid/interesting ways. The desired result? A set which will get people having a great time and dancing their socks off. Like a band set, or even a jazz solo, it has to retain interest, have buildups and also breathing space, and ultimately a climax. If they have done it right, people will leave at the end feeling exhilarated. Another point to make is the visuals - it's not just a bloke at a record deck. The big DJ acts now tend to travel round with enormous sets/lightshows to the festivals. Here's an example of a great 40 min set from superb 'ghetto funk' DJ Father Funk http://soundcloud.com/father-funk/funk-aerobics Given a choice of this or a Foo Fighters set, I know where I'd rather be!
14. ....and then in the next picture turned round to storm out again
15. Is it just me, or does the second picture look like the cab has just burst into the room saying "What the f*** are you looking at?!"
16.
Hi For the sake of having a level playing field, what is the 'RMS' rating of this head? Cheers Geoff
I think he just said in that post that it was 500w?
17.
I appreciate people doing something a bit different, and I like a lot of Jens Ritter's instruments. However, don't think either the above instrument's finish, or the following instrument's finish, does it for me. I'm also not sure about this blue fretboard look, but I could imagine more people liking this than the above two. Not that I would want to discourage anyone from trying anything different, I'm sure that there are people who would love any one of these.
Love? Yes Be seen with? No
18.
what is your idea of groove Roland, really interested to hear other opinions.?
I may have been a bit quick on the draw, as a second listen sounds better, but I have noted over the years where our tastes/ideas of groove tend to diverge. I'm busy today but will try to give a proper response when I have time to sit and think about it/find some examples
19. Tbh the song doesn't do it for me at all, not my idea of groove, but I love the video!
20. One of these should do the job, and note "silent switching" option https://www.vein-tap.com/product-category/true-bypass-loopers/?utm_source=Vein-Tap.com+Newsletter&utm_campaign=bf3207bcc6-Clickless_True_Bypass8_5_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9f7cb15e72-bf3207bcc6-105502853&mc_cid=bf3207bcc6&mc_eid=84fef6d8de
21. Pretty sure I was in this band! It was really good fun. Hope you find a good replacement
22. Wow! This thread has gone properly tits up since I last visited!😂
23. We've had both of our submitted tracks played. TBH I don't know who listens, but any exposure is good, and you can say you've been featured on the BBC 😁
24.
Yes. Sorry I misread you post. Blame it on my bad eye.
No worries amigo
