1.
Just remember that the OC-3 doesn't sound like the OC-2 at all. Do yourself a favour and just buy the OC-2 Si
I bought it on the strength of the wet tone from a YT vid. If it doesn't do it for me, I'll follow your advice :-)
 2.
Les Creusets?
I don't think they are that heavy
 3.
YES! Go and stand in the corner you heretic!
OK, I'll go to the naughty corner :-p :-D PS -While you were out, Bruce Springsteen called - he wants his cutoff denim jacket back
 4.
If you're happy to make up your own cables then you could look into "Arctic PVC" cables. It is designed to stay flexible down to -20 C which means that at "normal" temperatures it has a soft and very flexible feel. http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/33-320_FLEXIBLE-MAINS-3-core-0.75-sq.mm-Black-Arctic-PVC
That looks spot on, thanks
 5. I was talking about mains power lead. For a quality guitar lead, I go to Rock Wire. Dave will make you a top notch cable for a reasonable price. http://www.rock-wire.uk.com
 6. Would it be unfair to suggest that multiple/slidey EQ sections are seen as a bit dated?
 7. Not heard of the Avatar, and doubt many would on this side of the pond. About nine years ago I bought a little-known cab from the States, and it was really, really good. Two things to consider are: - You'll need to factor in postage and tax/import charges - No matter how good it is, if you ever want to sell it on in this country, you'll take a big hit, as people only tend to pay for brands that they are familiar with. Edit: if you live in the US, ignore the above :-D
 8. As long as you don't palm mute, I'd say tort with the ashtray. Proper retro. The jazz you tried at the bash wasn't zero9's Warmouth/Status job, was it? That was a lovely bass!
 9.
^ this the tuners especially look like a determined relic job + while being no expert I think in 1969 they were still on tug-bars ratrher than thumb-rests.
There are tugbar screwholes (at least there are on the scratchplate) so it could just have been moved
 10.
One of the great pleasures in life is a proper power stage. Endless headroom and instant transient delivery is totally where it is at. I used to run 3Kw bridged into an Eden 410XLT. Every note was a joy.
Do you still have your Avalon U5 Owen? I don't suppose you know the output voltage?
 11.
Used this over the weekend for a festival show: Fromel modded Boss CE-2B -> Blakemore Deus Ex Machina -> DOD FX-10 Bi-Fet Pre -> Boss OC-2 -> Boss TU-2 Si
How come you put the tuner at the end Si?
 12. I've played the intro/chorus to this song by using a 'tap'n'slide' technique with both hands - - start by tapping your right index finger on the 17th fret of the G string (C ), and your left index finger on the 3rd fret of the E string (G) - simultaneously slide down to the 9th fret on the G string (E), and up to the 8th fret on the E string (C ) - then simultaneously slide up to the 14th fret on the G string (A), and down to the first fret on the 1st fret on the E string (F) It's surprisingly effective The verses I just tried played the line fingerstyle, getting as close as possible to the double bass part's feel.
 13.
Expect lots of suggestions of the Jazz Bass kind.
Understandable
Quite taken by contoured jazz style shapes like these
14. Bugger - this is going to take a while. I went through them, thinking 'that's the one', then another 'the one' came along, then three more! So, I've narrowed it down to five - will need to have a few more runs through. Well done composers - you are all very talented and knowledgable
 15.
Ashdown are a good example. Continually slated for sounding woolly or as if someone is holding a blanket to the cab...
.... the definitive blanket statement
 16.
My cupboard doesn't have a door, it's more of a display area:
Ah, that's different. Display area basses are all great. I remember your build diary for this - cool little space
 17.
Opinions go bad and get my nose out of joint when they are paraded around as fact. I try to be really careful not to do this these days - I'm sure in the past I've jumped on the "wooly Ashdown" bandwagon based upon the experience of clapped out gear in rehearsal rooms for example. No more though. If I think it's good, then it is good - in my little bubble. I will shy away from making blanket statements about the output of a particular brand, model, factory, country of manufacture etc. because I can categorically state that I lack the statistical oversight of the entire group being discussed to make any such proclamations. I can say with 100% certainty that the 10 basses in my bass cupboard are the best 10 basses in my bass cupboard though Anything else I say can and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I don't expect everyone to agree with me and my love of Gibson basses for instance (part of the appeal for me is the championing of the underdog anyway), but I will take grave exception to anyone who has the impudence/arrogance to make blanket statements about the quality/tone/structural integrity of "all Gibson basses" just because they didn't like the microscopic sample they tried. That's just like saying all cheese is awful, just because the first cheese you ever tasted was a Danish Blue and you didn't like it. So ALL cheese is bad? Riiiiiight then.
Cupboard basses are all sh*t
 18.
Where would music be without entertainment? Surely the real conclusion is that there is room for all forms of music . . . Even karaoke and elevator Muzak. You just have to choose the stuff you like and allow others to do the same.
There should be, and I'd like to think that there is room. I just hope that, over time, the original stuff doesn't get elbowed out of venues for financial reasons.

 20.
Opinions are always 100% accurate because it's a person's viewpoint based on their own experience at the time
How would you apply that to the second example? What if he played it now and it's a disappointment? Then his opinion was not 100% accurate
 21. An opinion is a personal thing, and everyone is entitled to one, although some are more qualified than others, right? This topic is about how time/memories/other factors may distort the truth somewhat. Here's some hypothetical examples: - A player had a 2EQ Stingray 13 years ago, and he has always upheld on BC that they didn't like the tone. The truth is, he was young and clueless about controls at that time, and in likelihood just had the Bass and Treble cranked all the time. - Someone states that a certain rig that they had in the '70s was the perfect tone, a tone that no other rig to this day can equal. That was 40 years ago - the person is very different, their hearing is probably different. Perhaps those 'glory days' bring back all sorts of happy memories of youth, groupies etc. and their memory has filtered out all the crap stuff. Could their memory have sweetened up the tone of that rig over time? - A band are supporting, and the headliners kindly offer the use of their gear. The bass player is faced with an Orange Terror bass and a Markbass cab, neither of which she has used before. She is too polite to tweak the controls, so plays the gig, and is not keen on the tone. Every time an Orange Terror is mentioned on BC, she chips in saying that they are crap. I have been guilty of 'blanket statements' on BC in the past. When you think about it, how accurate are your opinions on gear?
 22.
I've just had Jon Shuker build me a sublime bass, the easiest design process via email I've encountered. Alan's ACGs are also fantastic, his lead times are why I didn't pick one of them, and also his shapes are all too Jazz-y for me, but might suit you. I will say, though, that nearer you are to definite and settled on your design requirements, the happier you'll be with the finished results. I knew EXACTLY what I wanted, and when I got it, executed by Jon with what I can only describe as artistry, I was very happy indeed. If you go down the luthier route with any vagueness, you run the risk of disappointing yourself, and then you'll be left with an instrument with a terrifying residual value.
You chose Shuker over ACG because the Shuker lead time was shorter??
 23.
what he said - I picked my Hellborg preamp up partly because 2x18's nice power amp needed more output than it could give
You mean the Hellborg didn't have enough output for the power amp? This compatibility is tricky to know in advance, as not many preamp manufacturers state the output levels. I had to contact Glockenklang (who were great) to ensure that my head's preamp had enough output for the Crown. For the Avalon, I've just had to go on anecdotal web stuff where people have said that they've happily run their U5 with a Crown power amp.
