Seems to be an awful lot of love for the fusion....is it really worth the extra £150? I'd have assumed a tube preamp would soften and warm up the growly mids I'm after?
I thought you were after a valve-like tone? I've not heard the Fusion, but was very impressed with the MB 200 I heard, so GK could be right up your street. The Streamliner is a great head, but I have the feeling that it won't have enough mid presence for you. The Shuttle is incredibly versatile, and I'm sure you could easily get what you're after.

I once saw a Five Star tribute who were nowhere near as good as the real thing. I think they were called 5 Star Unleaded

For nice one offs, I use Timberline. Bob is a lovely chap: http://www.exotichardwoods.co.uk For bulk, I usually go to Brooks Brothers or Associated Timber (who I believe have bought John Boddys) All of the above deliver

Not a sale, but a testament to his character. Simon was the main organiser of the Midlands Bass Bash, and he did a superb job. Proactive and diligent, he's a man you want to deal with!

The Importance of Artwork & Logos
Roland Rock replied to stingraybassman's topic in General Discussion
Haha, fair enough - I just think there are other ways to show genre but stand out from the others at the same time. Also, some I can't even make out what they are called. Surely this is counterproductive, unless the band only want to appeal to a very small, select 'inside' crowd -
The Importance of Artwork & Logos
Roland Rock replied to stingraybassman's topic in General Discussion
As it happens, my band just took delivery of a logo today, so we've put it on the Facebook page and various places. I put it in my sig here too, I suppose it all helps create that awareness. Oh, and of course, stickers to go on pub toilet cisterns, as is mandatory. Question - why do so many death metal bands feel that they have to conform to a certain logo type - namely totally illegible spiky writing? There was a blind test on here a while back including various Ps and P copies. When the identities were revealed, I was very surprised that what I considered to be the most 'vintage' tone actually turned out to be a modern USA Standard Precision
Surely good music or bad music all comes down to personal preference?
Definitely. There is awful when you don't like the style or concept or whatever. Then there is awful because the 'musicians' lack the skill to play the composition to the appropriate standard. I'd guess that the latter is more universally seen as 'bad music' It's quite interesting thinking about contrasting scenarios though: - A person goes to see a fusion outfit - the band are all incredible musicians who play blistering solos, but this chap just can't feel any sort of connection at all. - Then they go and see their seven year old play his first school orchestra show. The whole thing is a train wreck verging on farce. Kids are forgetting their parts and the girl on triangle is going nuts. The chap is filled with joy and pride.
Can I ask, what case is that? As it looks pretty much the ideal size for my use.
It's the Excellent Protec PA-1212, but sadly I thing they don't make them any more. There are a couple of alternatives out there, made for a small 12"squared mixer
-
I actually made my own board last week from black 9mm ply. It's 12" squared because those are the internal dimensions of the Protec case that I want it to live in. For neatness, all cables run straight down from their socket, through a hole to the underside. I added some 'skirts' to hide the cables underneath, and to allow a 'power socket' on the side. Basically, it went like this: 1: Cut a square of ply, plus several strips at a 20mm width for the 'skirts' 2: Glue the skirts to the square, then round the edges and sand smooth. 3: Lay the pedals where they will sit, and mark for the cable holes 4: Drill holes, round edges and sand. 5: Drill a hole in the skirt for the power socket. 6: Prime and paint the board. 7: Screw rubber feet into the corners 8: Place some adhesive-backed velcro in the places where the pedals will sit. Reinforce by stapling onto the board. 9: Stick The pedals on, attach the cables and feed through the holes. 10: Attach the power socket to the skirt 11: Use cable ties and gaffa tape to make the underside as neat as possible.

Pretty sure ACS and ER are the same company? I have the 15db cut filters and they do a great job of 'turning down the volume a bit', although I do find that there is a bit of treble missing with them in. I have the ER4 earphones, and the moulded ACS earplugs fit perfectly onto them, to create extremely comfortable, superb sounding earphones.

A few people I know are in a new tribute "Songs in the key of Wonder". I don't know who is doing Stevie but it'll be well worth checking out I reckon
-
Fair enough. Just to clarify, when I mentioned scales/chord tones, I didn't just mean knowing them, but playing them over and over until the notes run into eachother seamlessly. It's good to do that in different tempos, as well as different styles. If you can play the chord tones/arpeggio for F# major fluidly without any glitches, then you're sorted. I fear it's just a matter of practice! Obviously hand size is a factor too. I'll have a go at it myself in a bit and see if there are any other tips I have not thought of.

I've been in a Bowie Tribute and it was such great fun. Of course, there are those TribHaters on BC, but each to their own - it's a spectacle, great music and people love it.

Valve Amplifiers Only. No Hybrids / Valve pre-amps..
Roland Rock replied to VTypeV4's topic in Gear Gallery
I've taken both my valve amps in to John Chambers for a check over/MOT I've let him have free reign on the Red Iron to see if he can squeeze any more volume/headroom out of it. The most likely thing being a replacement output transformer, and maybe some new KT88s / rebiasing The Twin Valve he'll just give a once over to ensure all is as it should be. When I was discussing the problem of getting ultra-clean loud lows from a 100w amp, he advised his old setup - a 4x12/1x18 cab and 400w valve amp. Quote: "it was a bugger to lift" :-D Oh, and I saw the 1000W monster in the flesh. It's ludicrously amazing to behold!
