1. +1 on second hand My 2 Jazz basses were £150 each from this very forum A lot of bass for the money.
2. I usually just play root / fifth with the odd sliding 4th when playing something I don't know. Doesn't sound stupid at all Groove to the beat etc (although I have never played with a big band) but music is music
3. Ah, that's probably why I don't play Jazz then I had forgotten that they change keys etc. It is from listening and playing those changes that you create that groove. I will bow out of your thread and leave it to those that know what they are talking about!
4. I find it easier to memorise chord progressions than lines! Usually the chords progress in some order (II V IV) etc for example. If you know the key you can usually work out whats next. I don't play Jazz so lets see what Bilbo has to say......
5.
What I meant was, I envy those who can simply enjoy playing. A friend of mine loves playing, could play pretty much anything and get enjoyment out of it. That must be nice. I could never be like that. I suffer constant emotional turmoil but hate every minute of feeling like that. As we've sort of discussed before, I like things to be relaxed, pleasant, simple, and of course they never are. I actually create better when I'm relaxed and happy, which could explain some of my more recent output and playing!
That is a great shame. I play for enjoyment. Of course I want it to be good but I don't get terribly upset if it doesn't go right. I just enjoy making music and if someone pays me and enjoys it too, then yippee win win.
6. I took in Goats Head Soup (The Rolling Stones). I really didn't know (as I was 10 or so at the time) that the lyrics to Star Star were so explicit I got a whack around the head and a detention for my troubles!
7. I think that music has shaped my life. Playing, listening and all the associated memories make up the experiences. I use creating music now to control stress and create enjoyment. and there's always the money
8. I looked on the Ashdown site for a manual on my MAG 300 head. The manual tells you that you can have a min 4Ohm load and there are 2 jacks. To the uninitiated, that is not very helpful. I had already guessed that it meant 2 x 8 Ohm cabs but if you didn't know about series / parallel wiring you would be lost. So not such a daft question after all
9. Cool thread. I want the plank
10. Go with the groove and stay in key with lots of passing notes........ If the chord progression flows well, I like to play the changes if I can.
11. Welcome aboard I too come from the guitar camp but only switched a couple of years ago. I'm a Fender Jazz man myself but the Jaguar look really cool Here's to the growing ex guitarist fraternity
12.
Have to say I'd be wary of this auditon type 'gig'...too many pubs might use it as an excuse to fill their pub on a quiet night... As long as the Landlord is genuine and gives out gigs, then maybe..?? but the auditions bands round here that get used as fillers have been pretty poor and no credit to anyone, tbh. They don't even do the pub any favours as people go elsewhere and don't drop in on the pub on the off-chance anymore. Last's nights band cleared out the pub.. as it happens and that is two duff bands in a row..!! The goal should be that the band is good enough to get gigs without giving out freebies.... IMO..!!
I totally agree with this statement. The only problem is (IME) that Landlords don't listen to the demo you spend time and money on. They tend to want word of mouth recommendations. Shoot Pool in Aylesbury will only hire a band with no references by them doing a jam night first. It is a way in but the warning you give is very valid. How would you recommend and new band to get feedback? When I play, I usually can tell if the song was OK, BUT that is my opinion. You really need an audience to confirm it (not a bunch of friends who don't want to hurt your feelings!) A vicious circle or Catch 22 for those old enough to remember that book! We will record some tracks when ready and I will post them on soundcloud. Perhaps BC can judge if we are worthy of a gig
13.
Thanet, in East Kent. I'm sure it's not that bad, although ...
Ah, the garden of England...... I probably won't get to gig that far from Bucks
14.
I haven't gigged for over a year, but from what I hear, and given the obvious state of the local music scene the average pub gig would probably mean 3 drunken chavs arguing by the fruit machine, a maincally depressed landlord and me wondering why I ever thought joining another band was a good idea.
wow! Where are you based (thinking of not going there to play) ?

16. I love my Jazz
17.
Trouble is as I've got older gigs have become less fun, to the point where I now wonder why I play bass at all. I was in a band a few years ago where I owned the PA, which meant I had to load/unload a lot of kit, usually by myself. Arrive 2 hours before anyone else and at the end of the night do the same again. I didn't get any extra cash at the end of the night, or even a thank you for providing us with a PA system! It all got a bit depressing to be honest.
That is always the problem. I did the sound and lights for a couple of bands and that helped with the harmony of the members. I humped all the gear / set up the stage etc for which I got a share of the cash. It worked out well but in the end I wanted to play rather than roadie so I knocked it on the head and sold all the gear. I am regretting selling the portable PA as the one I have in my rehearsal space weights a ton!
18. That sounds like a good plan - we can test our sound in a live setting and maybe get a gig too thanks for info
19.
I once bought Noel Gallagher a pint just after the first bass player (Guigsy I think) left and foolishly didn't offer my services. I would have been bloody good at 16th root notes by now ...
But I thought that you ARE good at 16th root notes
20.
Now you know why I am a jazz musician. I can't remember s*** so I make it up as I go along
I'm going to junk rock for jazz now!
21. I would be distraught if I had missed a chance to gig with Duffy! Never having been in such a position, I don't know how I would feel. Looking forward is all I have to be honest Edit:I can't spell
22. That's cool I'm in Aylesbury but we plan to play Berkhampstead / Hemel etc as well as Aylesbury. The other chaps come from that way. We rehearse in my back garden and even my misses said we sounded good (and she doesn't often complement me ) I will post when we have our first gig!
usually kick off about 9.00pm..All are welcome..bring yer partners, parents, kids, cats or dogs...its all good fun...oops sorry Blademan, didn't mean to hijack your thread
23. Welcome aboard. Nice bass (I really like the Aerodyne). I'm in Bucks so if you get gigging let me know and I'll try and pop along to support you.
24. William Control, my daughter went to see them a couple of years ago (she has a hoodie with their logo on!) They are simple songs with a driving bass. Cool gig, good luck with it
25. Money and pleasure! I like making a loud noise and I just love to see people dance to my beat I spend the money on my misses to keep her happy!!!!
