1. I have only recently bought a 5 string. I practice on that first, then pick up the 4 string. It seems tiny compared and I feel more fluent! Love them both but find the 5 string gives me more scope.
2.
Because it doubles the cellos in an orchestra an octave down.
Does that mean an electric bass is more akin to a cello? (Serious question) Cheers.
3. +1 to the above. Take the drummer and start a new band
4. My long suffering misses is ok about stuff as long as it's different to existing kit..... She actually pointed out my Orange combo
5. You must have been well gutted hope it is ok :-) I once borrowed a guitar and dropped it as i got it out of the car. I ended up buying it because the repair costs were so high :-(
6.
I've an old Peavey mega bass head I hope to use as a power amp with a Sansamp vt pedal. Oddly, the effects loop has a single Jack as both the send and the return so It'll need some sort of compatible cable. Would anyone know what the cable might be?
Probably a stereo to mono split: http://www.maplin.co.uk/1-4-6.35mm-stereo-...ono-plugs-28109 The only way you can get a signal in and out on the same connector I would have thought.
7. +1 on all of the above....... Also, where are you located?
8. I took my travel guitar to Hong Kong earlier this year. I took photo's on the way out and then showed them on the way back in. Air NewZealand were cool, the customs guys were on the case! Still, I knew there may be a need for proof (advise from this site) and took precautions. Believe me they are on the ball.
9. Something to do with the bass response (frequency) that is passed through. The electronics are optimised to guitar / bass. Some pedals sound ok in isolation but if you A/B them there is a noticeable difference. Still, I use my guitar chorus pedal on my bass!
10.
I would put my own bum notes in. Strange question to ask on BassChat. Don't most basschatters listen to the first bar and then make the rest up?
+1
11. Stevie Wonder ~ Superstition It's the next one on my list to learn.......
12. Sweet collection Hmmm just a fretless missing from the line up!
13. Welcome aboard!
14.
Are you just playing them by running patterns,or do you actually know what you are playing and how the notes work together? Don't look at scales as technique practice. Learn the notes that are involved and play them all over the fingerboard and over every available octave. If you are just running patterns then you will get nothing out of them.
That's great advice. My bass tutor has got me to do this and it really helps! I now think about the notes and where I can go from there. I still use patterns but within the context of knowing the notes I am playing.
15. I have been recording myself for a while now. I thought it was just vanity! Seriously though, I can hear the mistakes and try harder next time
16. Wow, I don't think I will ever post a serious recording on here! I NEVER play bum notes, just LOADS of chromatic passing notes! That will be my coat I'm getting then
17. +1 on all of above. I also split the scales practice time (say fives minutes at at time) with learning or playing a new/well rehearsed bass line. It keeps interest etc. I truly think that if it's not fun, then it will not stay in!
18. I tried one of these. It felt heavy and chunky. IMHO they are not that good (and I DO buy cheap guitars/basses etc)
19. Started playing bass the hard way I've played guitar for a while and the set required some bass.......... I borrowed my daughters Ibanez SRX700 and gave it a go. Complete convert to the low side now
20. I prefer flats but as stated above, the rounds are cheaper.......
21. Superb resource and a very well laid out site. Congratulations!
22. Well after an afternoon of playing and recording (including a jam with the family) I have put the bass down and I am spending the evening watching tv and reading BC comments! Decided to have a Saturday night in
23. Pickups seem the only thing in the budget left to do! (maybe a bit of copper tape in the routing and a new jack socket) then you are done
24. I once started a gig (on guitar) with a capo in the wrong position. I threw me out all evening
25. As the title suggests, my family sat down and jammed. My wife on bongo's, youngest daughter on keyboard, middle daughter on acoustic guitar and me on fretless bass. The result is supprising! Take a listen if you dare............... Now on soundcloud
