The melodies of the vocals and some of the counter melodies in the surrounding orchestration is just... well, perfection. For me, Rutger Gunnarsson is one of the best pop bass players of all time... yet one of the most forgotten.
+1 I actually hated Abba with a vengance when they were at their peak as I was so much into rock music. But I can appreciate them now for what they are, truly superb. The arrangements are second to none.
  2. Welcome to the forum. If your after a Bass there are always plenty in the Basses for Sale section to wet your appetite. Enjoy !

    Hi all

Hi Welcome to the forum, you will find most things here bass related. If you get stuck drop me a PM and I'll do what I can to help. John
  4. Never really suffered from nerves just before I go on to do a gig. I just like to get there and get set up, tune up the basses, and then re-check them again about 10 minutes before we are due to go on. I hate hanging about though, I like to get on and play asap. !
  5.
I think it depends on your approach, if you want to play with a high proportion of improvisation in your parts then fretboard knowledge is useful... If you want to learn parts by rote and nail them then a knowledge (of the note names) is irrelevant... I would say, however, that the knowledge that is most important is an aural one, theoretical (or note name) knowledge helps when explaining to others or working theoretical correctitude into your pallette, but the final test is an aural one and to that extent I regard aural awareness of the notes as the single MOST important aspect of one's own playing.
Good post Jake, I agree with this. I've been playing for years, fretboard knowledge has come naturally over time, but I have good "ears" so can learn tunes easily and 99% of the time my fingers fall on the correct note after only 2 or 3 times of hearing a tune.
  6. I know this might sound boring, but I'd recomend Shuker as well. You get an awful amount of Bass for your money. This is my Shuker 6 headless. Its brilliant. Built to my exact spec, it sounds and plays way beyond what I expected. http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/hlelite.htm
  7. Piggin Ek ! Brilliant is that ! We've just formed a Wishbone Ash Tribute band as well. It never dawned on me just how good Martin Turner was until I had to learn some of his Bass parts. Man, he's brilliant and well under rated. Thanks for posting that.
  8.
That's interesting, because I recently swapped onto Hi-Beams on a bass that had previously been setup whilst it had D'Addarios on and now it has a fair amount of fret buzz.
Were they they the same gauge ?
  9.
I haven't tried that many makes of strings actually, (well not on my basses) it does seem to be Hi-Beams that always die quickly, but I did kill some D'Addarios fairly fast recently as well.
That's probably the answer to your question. Try a few different makes. I use to use Rotosounds, but now use Status Hotwires on all my basses and they last ages.
  10.
PM from nurguzik titled 'Read to all' I also got one.I have told PED about it
This one has now been dealt with.
  11.
Lovely, hope you don't have maroon skirtings anymore. That is a beautiful instrument, why did you get rid?
Steve, Nah, got luverly stained skirtings now, all new like ! I got rid of the Alembic because of the electronics mainly, all the tone controls were like wah wah pedals in minature, I just found it too much. Even Mark King said it drove him nuts as well at times. Also I couldn't justify having such an expensive bass lying around. Must say I've regretted it though. I'd like a nice Cocobolo one like Daveski's next. I actually had my Shuker 6er made with a quilted maple top because I liked the one on the Alembic so much, I sent Jon Shuker the picture of the Alembic body that I posted on this thread and asked him to make sure the top was as good as that, he didn't disapoint !
  12. I quite fancy this one as well, looks like it will be great. I'll do my best to be there and bring all the "toys"
  13. This was my Alembic Mark King. Like a utter and complete prat I sold it. Boo Hoo I must need my head lookin at. Is there a doctor in the house !
  14. Hi Karl Welcome to the forum. We have a section in "Gear - Repairs and Technical Issues" that will be better suited to your query. You stand a better chance of getting an answer there. Let me know if you are ok with it and I'll move this thread there. Cheers John
  15. Oh no, I knew it was a mistake to look at this

    Rack tuners
Hi Guys, I've been a bit fussy recently with the tuner on my GT10-B so I was thinking about buying a rack mounted tuner. Are they any good ? If yes which one would you say is the piece for the job ? Any advice greatly apreciated Budget : No more than £120-ish Cheers Jack
I've had a Korg DTR 1000 in my rack for about a year now and its been brilliant. Not sure on the price new now though, but they do pop up for sale on here from time to time.
  17.
You know that thing where a bluebottle goes mad when it's stuck between the two halves of your sash windows on a summer afternoon? This is what it hears in its little bluebottle head. The reason it goes mad is because it can't get away from the sound. I went a bit mad just now because my mouse stopped working for a few seconds and I couldn't turn the f***ing thing off. That was truly one of the most hideous displays of musical instrument operation I have seen. He makes Wooten look as clever as he really is, and the guy's pulse and timing in that vid was all over the place in parts. Outrageous indeed.
That is post of the year so far..Classic
  18. I thought I'd treat you to these pics of me with my JD Mark King. These pics are now just over 20 years old. I got into Bass and not long after a workmate of mine showed me a video of the BBC Sight and Sound in Concert featuring Level 42 that had been on telly the previous weekend, blown away or wot !. They had just brought out Micro Kid, and about 2 weeks later they played Nottingham so I went along to the gig, blown away even more ! They were awesome. I went to see them at the NEC when they had all the hits, but it wasn't the same. The sound was that bad at the NEC I never went back again, even to this day ! Anyway the band in the photo's was called Danceschool, in the last spot the lads dressed up as schoolboys and the 2 girls did the full St Trinians schoolgirl stuff complete with gadders, if you get what I mean . The punters loved it. Anyway's enjoy the pics
  19.
Groan....can't believe I'm chipping in but....... Why can't people just live and let live? You dig an artist, whoever it is, so you buy and enjoy thier stuff. If you don't dig said artist, then don't listen to them. Victor is an outstanding musician, anyone who can't see that is a moron. Some like his style, some don't, who gives a sh*t either way??
Amen to that.
  20. Yet another thread is turning into a slanging match. Game over folks
  21.
Is it the one with the blue LEDs?
The DTR1000 has red leds the DTR2000 has the blue, I think
  22. Hi Richard Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it here. John
  23.
.....and we're off again. I could say, stop being the Basschat troll but I won't.
AM1 has made a legitimate request, its up to each individual if they choose to offer free lessons to AM1 or anybody else on the forum or not. But bit does not give people the right to turn threads into slanging matches and trade personal insults. Can we all please calm down a bit !
  24. Can you add me to the list please. Thankx
