1.
Stunning collection there John, truly amazing! Hows the new Status working out for you? Mark
The new Status is excellent, the wow factor is there everytime I open the case, which is a good sign, and she plays really well.
2. Here is my rig, and basses. Rig is Korg DTR1000 tuner, Lexicon MX200 Reverb-Chorus effects, Hartke HA3500 amp. Cabs are Hartke XL2.5 and XL 1x15. Basses are left to right Status S2 6 string headless, Shuker 6 string headless, Status S2 5 string headed. Quite a nice little bunch. The rig is quite compact and does everything I need. Its took me a fair while to build this lot up, and they all look like keepers. At the Bottom is a pic of the 2 Statii together. Everything will be at the bash if you fancy a go !
3. Owing to timewasters, I'm still looking for a decent band. Anything considered, but prefer a working Covers - Tribute band. I learn tunes very quickly, so I can step straight into a band. Please PM if you know of any band looking. Thanks John
4. Er, can we have pics please, or do we have to use our imagination. Pics stir up the GAS you know !
5. Personally I couldn't give a toss. They once tried to rip me off by overcharging by £300 for a new Status 5 string with LEDs. I ended up buying the exact same bass direct from Status for the correct price.
6.
Lovely lump of CG you have there, John... Let me know when you're ready to move this one on I've got a thing for six-stringers at the moment! I'll be down at Colchester at the end of next month to pick up my new KingBass Artist Was the MK flightcase still in the corner of Rob's workshop?
I doubt this one will ever get moved on. I've got a Status S2 5er thru that I bought new from Status in 1999, that is also a keeper. Its bad news going down to the Status factory, they had a beautiful Streamliner in green with blue LED's that I'm gassing for now, never thought I would like a Streamliner, but in the flesh they look great, and yes, the MK flightcase was still in the corner.
7.
I am just interested to hear what you all prefer, as i am actively seeking a new bass at the moment and i can't decide which i prefer. This older more experienced bassist told me in a shop to purchase a thru-neck as it prevents the neck moving which made me think he had a valid point. All my favourite Jazz basses seem to be bolt-ons so i am assuming that as long as you have a hard case and take good care of the bass the neck should always be fine.
I've got both at the moment, I've just bought a new Status S2 6er bolt on, if I'd have opted for a thru neck it would have cost about £400 more, a cost I could not justify. People will argue that a thru will give a better tone, maybe it will, but is the extra cost worth it. I also have a Status S2 5er thru, and the new 6er is just as good. I think that you are right in that if you look after them in a good case, a bolt on neck bass will give few problems.
8.
That's one beautiful looking bass Whilst on the "why headless" question.. Could you answer a question for me... Do you find a difference between headless basses with double ball end strings and those using 'regular' strings but are clamped ? I do like the headless design (have owned a couple in the past), but I have a fear of the clamps slipping over time and a large string then slapping me in the face (mentally scarred by being caught by a violin string breaking cutting my face when I was a kid).
The Bass in my Avatar is a Shuker 6 string headless. When Jon made it for me it was fitted with a clamp system to retain the strings at the head end of the neck. I didn't like it, its way to fiddly when changing strings, and I thought it may wear over time so I asked him to make me a double ball end string retainer, which the bass now has fitted. The Status has both fitted as standard, I love double ball end strings they take about a minute each to change.
9.
Very Nice! Why do you prefure the Headless?
I dunno really, part of it is I'm sick of trying to put the head of a bass through low club ceilings when I take them off. And they do tend to stay in tune better. I have a Status S2 headed 5er as well, but I think if its Status, then it should be headless !
10. Here is my new Status S2 Classic Headless 6 string. Facing is Cocobolo, back is Mahogany, centre block is Walnut and its finished off with Gold hardware. Its been played in anger for the first time today and its absolutely brilliant. I went down to the Status factory to pick it up, and had a good hour chatting with Dawn, it was great to see her again. Anyhow, to say I was stunned by the quality of this bass is an understatement, it is stunning, the photos just don't do it justice. It will be at the Bash if anyone fancy's having a go.
11. I've now taken delivery of the Status 6er and its absolutely brilliant. Pics are in the Bass Porn section !
12.
I really have to disagree about the lack of bottom end...... I really can't see why some people say that?
Me neither, mine had loads. I suppose it will depend on what cabs you play through.
13. I sold my Kingbass only because it was a 4 string when I wanted a 5. I much prefer the shape of the S2 classic anyway, I pick up a new S2 headless 6er from Status tomorrow. My Kingbass was also beautifully balanced as well, and the build quality was second to none.

15.
this is a beautiful bass BUT it was dropped by a member of my band in 1987
Sorry, I'd have killed the tw*t on the spot !
16.
Wasn't it BassJamm who won the pudding eating competition?? I think Homer had the pictures?
I think it might have been Status (the man not the bass) as he got the nickname 2 puds !
17. It suits me fine as well, I was only on about this with Dood a few weeks ago. I'll be there with the rig and the boys !
18. Steve As per PM's consider it sold. I've been after a decent Jazz for ages.
19. Having batteries go dead on Active bass and not having spares. This was only 2 songs into the set. I told the singer and guitarist to do the 10 minute "acoustic" bit early. I walked off stage in full stage gear, out the club to the corner shop, bought new batteries and got them into the bass just as the acoustic bit finished ! I now carry a small alluminium case to gigs with every spare I can think of. (except a spare bass, as it won't fit in) Ho Hum. In a band many years ago I turned around on stage one night and smacked the headstock of the bass into the face of the girl singer resulting in badly cutting her eye and mucho blood. She was a real looker as well and had a very nice pencil dress on, after I smacker her one the resulting blood covered dress didn't have the same effect, she also looked like she had gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Funnily enough she didn't speak to me for two weeks.
20.
Been listening to a lot of Early Duranie stuff and John Taylor's stuff is just excellent. How can a guy be that good looking, play that well and own a Aria Pro II SB1000 Also Mick Karn was a big influence on me growing up. Anybody got any other New Romantic bassists worth checking out? I remember a band called 'Fashion' being around. The music was awful but the bass playing sounded very Mick Karn like.
FASHION were excellent, especially with Dee Harriss on vocals, Fabrique is their best album by far. Can't remember the bass players name though.
21. In my experience a lot more audiences are tuned in to what is a good sound and what is not. Also "Sound Engineers" need to be good at mixing a band dependant on the type of songs they play. Sounds obvious you might think ! but no ! when I played in a Beautiful South Trinute band, we played on a gig where the resident sound engineer at the club gave our drummer a classic rock (AC-DC) style drum sound, it was unreal ! I've also heard excellent bands play through sh*te PA that must be at least 25 years old and sound crap.
22. I think you just need to be versatile and fairly competent to do the covers thang, I've done covers and tribute and it can be a blast. Money is normally crap though, so if you get hung up about playing for a living you will probably end up being disapointed. I'm also finding it hard to find a band with people who can actually play at the moment, so that aspect can do you head in as well. Oh, and one final thing, don't just stand there looking bored and staring at the neck on the bass all night, it looks crap.
23.
I use a Korg DTR-1 which I got for about £60 second hand from the States and it's almost too good. I can never get my basses to go completely in the green, even when tuning with the harmonics. When I get them as close as possible and check the tuning by ear they sound perfectly in, and the tuner is telling me they're still out. It's that precise!
+1, mines the same, it drives you nuts !
24. I learnt that having serious GAS attacks is very often a very meaningless excercise. In the last year I've got through a MM Stingray 4, A Sei Flamboyant 6 String and a Status Kingbass 4, and have felt very dissapointed in all of them for different reasons. The only ray of light has been the Shuker 6 Headless that I had made which is brilliant, and waking up to the fact that I should have got myself a Status S2 classic 6 string headless at the start of 2007 like I planned on doing, instead of doing about 500 miles in 2007 picking up and then selling "dream" basses to try to cure the GAS. The only saving grace is that I didn't loose money in doing it. The Status S2 Classic 6er is now on order, a year late ! and I pick it up in about 2 weeks time, and there I hope endeth the GAS !
