BEAUTIFUL SOUTH?...God man what were you thinking?...come the revolution they will be first against the wall.
Yeah I know, I've since seen the light and left the band. They are very busy though, the band are a very tallented group of muso's, but there are only so many times you can play "Don't Marry Her" until it gets to the point where you want to throw yourself off a bridge !
But he offers them for sale, so you'd think he would have them to hand, or at least order them in suficiently early enough, must be just me I suppose.
Jon did order them in plenty of time, it was just a chain of events that led to the delay. It would seem that on the back of my build, Jon is now having more interest shown in having 6 string headless basses built, so he has ordered more tuners in. To be honest they are not the norm, so I would not normally expect Jon to keep them in stock. Even if he has the bridge units, which are used on most basses he builds, they are not much use without the head unit. I should have phoned him today to see if they have turned up, but I have been out all day so I might still be on for a Saturday delivery all being well.

When I played in a Beautiful South tribute band, one club owner asked me if we played any rock tunes as well. Like what I asked, well Led Zep, Purple said the goon. No, we are a Beautiful South tribute band, well, you must play other stuff as well replied the goon. At that point I wanted to throttle him.
Maybe this is a good time to start figuring out how to manufacture headless bass tuning parts! I reckon with such a shortage of supply, a killing could be made!!! I am astounded that supply is sooo short!
Me too Dan. I spoke to Jon last week and he was expecting the tuners on Friday last week, so all being well I should get the Shuke by next weekend. Delivery of my bass has been delayed by about 5 weeks because of the lack of tuners. Not surprisingly, Jon has ordered a shed load of them so that future builds are not held up.

Anything by Girls Aloud, they are all sacred classics IMHO

Just a quick update peeps. The tuners have still not arrived from America, I'm beginning to think they have gone via slow boat to China as this is now starting to drive me mad !
I'm praying that my bass GAS will be cured when the Shuker arrives (no guarantees mind). Downside of that is I'll probably have amp GAS instead
Ah Haaa !!! Thats whats got me at the moment, but in my case its cab GAS. I'm thinking what if I swap the 1x15 and 2x10 for two 4x10's. there is no cure, GAS never ends, it just gets worse.
I take it Rob Green at Status couldn't help then?
No, Rob uses the same supplier apparently so he was keeping all the tuners he had in stock to use to finish basses off while he finds a new supplier or waits for the old one to get back up and running.
Just thought I'd let you know about Steve at Musical Electronic Repairs and Spares in Birmingham. He's located up a set of stairs at the top of a door next to Sound Control. Cracking bloke, who is a nice guy and is knowledgeable on all amps. He's one of these sort that doesn't have to advertise, kept in business by word-of-mouth... He turned round a full service on Hartke within about 2 days and it sounded lovely afterwards. He's only open on Mon, Thurs and Saturday so give him a call before popping up! 0121 233 9390
I have just given Steve a call about a possible problem with my amp. He gave me some great advice about things to try without asking me to bring the amp in on some wild goose chase. Thanks Steve !
1) Does the whistle go away if you turn down the volume control(s) of whatever bass is plugged in? If it does, then most likely it's just some environmental interference being picked up by the bass itself, and you'll just have to live with it. If it doesn't, then the problem's either in the amp or the lead connecting the bass to the amp. 2) Does the whistle appear regardless of where you're playing - at every gig, etc - or have you only noticed it at one particular venue/rehearsal space? If it occurs in only one place, then some new piece of electrical equipment in the local vicinity (in a neighbouring building...a mobile phone mast...anything!) is putting out interference. If it happens everywhere you play, then it's more likely to be indicative of a fault with your amp or cable. As to why it only appears on the PA: I'm guessing here, but if it's a high-pitched whistle, it may only appear to be coming out of the PA because your own rig's speakers aren't able to reproduce frequencies that high - or maybe the output stage of your amp is managing somehow to filter it out. You're not alone! When I'm at home, the bridge p/up of my Rick 4003 (single coil, non-humbucking) picks up a weird high-pitched sound like someone playing a spooky diminished chord on a Hammond organ with vibrato. It's been over two years now, and I've never been able to establish where it's coming from!
1. The whistle does go away when I turn the volume down on the bass, I've tried 2 basses now and its the same on both. 2. I'm only playing at the same venue at the moment, I'm due to play a different venue in a couple of weeks time, so I'll see if I get the same whistle there !

I have a Hartke HA3500 amp. With the D.I. connected its started to whistle through the PA, either with the post DI EQ signal switch in or out. If I stand with my bass square to the rig its fine, if I point my bass away from the rig it whistles through the PA. I've tried a different DI lead and a different bass and a different bass, and the whistle is still there. The rig is set up through the same PA I use every week so it could be something in the system. Its as if the bass is acting as an antenna to pick something up. We have also turned off all the mikes we use including wireless. If I take the DI lead out of the amp, the amp is fine. I used the amp a few weeks ago at an outdoor gig where we got the power through a generator, I used the DI then. Given the recent threads about power surges when using generators, has this got anything to do with my unwanted whistle suddenly appearing.
Sad news on 2 fronts, Number 1, the finish of my Bass is held up because Jon can't get tuners for it. Number 2 its because the supplier of headless tuners to Jon has sadly died suddenly. So if my Bass is held up, so what ! I know what is most important. Status have their headless tuners from the same suppplier it turns out. I will update further when Jon has sourced a new supplier.
I've just come off the phone to Jon, he has tracked down some tuners in the US of A and they "should" be here next week. So we are on for me picking up the bass in a weeks time. Wheeeeheeee
Hi Everyone, I'm starting to get the feeling I'm going to regret selling this! I have just taken delivery of and Ashdown Evo 500, anyone owned both and care to coment? R.
At the risk of being told to get fecked ! I'd keep the Hartke if at all possible, I've had my HA3500 for 5 years and its never let me down and done everything I've ever asked of it. I would never change it for an Ashdown of any description.
If you post on EB forum about it they tend to get a bit shi**y.
+1 Your not kidding. I posted a comment on the EB forum about this subject and thought I was going to get shot !

Fingers, because for me it gives more "feel" to what I want to play. I only ever used a plec years ago if I played say 4 gigs on a row and my fingers were shot.
I've had Status basses for years and was about to have another one made when Dood got me onto Shukers. If I had gone ahead with the Status build it would have been a pretty much stock sounding instrument, sure, I would have chosen the woods, but apart from that it would have been stock. This is in no way knocking Status, I've had 3 basses off them from new direct from the factory and Rob and Dawn are fantasic. With my Shuker, I have picked everything including pups, electrics, woods, finishes etc, and its come in a lot cheaper than the Status would have been. The beauty of Shukers, Sei etc is that you get what YOU want, rather than an expensive off the shelf item. My Shuker up to yet is turning out exactly as I asked Jon to make it. I always wanted a Sei and maybe will have one some day, they are stunning, but I'm not prepared to wait a year for a bass to be made, its a simple as that. Regards John (Full Back - Shuker F.C.)
Well, I've just been and collected kjb's used Sei Flambouyant 6er that I bought off him for a very reasonable price IMHO. When I posted my comments above I did say I always wanted a Sei, well now I've got one. The craftmanship is stunning and it sounds great. I'm also collecting my Shuker thru headless 6er in a couple of weeks, so I should be able to compare side by side, but I'm having doubts if this is fair or not. From what I have seen of Shukers, they are very well made and comparable to anything I have ever seen in terms of quality. My Shuke should sound great as well as I picked the PUP's etc based on a sound clip on Jon's site. I have not paid a lot more money for a new Shuker than I've paid for the used Sei. I would never have had a Sei if I'd had have to have bought one new. The price I'm paying for the Shuker is unreal given the spec so if one luthier can do it, they all can IMHO.

That is simply stunning, what a great looking bass.

I went into Sound Control in Derby last weekend, walked into the Bass / Acoustic section and the only sales guy in there was on the computer. I stood there for a few minutes and was ignored, I finally said to him excuse me can you help, the reply was " I've got to finish this, be with you in a minute" another five minutes went by and nothing. So I walked out, numpty was still on his puter and didn't bat an eyelid as I walked by.
Smashing, the advice about Shuker Basses has been priceless. Now looking forwrd to owning one of these superb basses.
+1 Dood has put up with endless PM's from me asking advice about various bass issues including Shukers, thanks a bundle mate !
-
I gave my business to Shuker because the quality was outstanding and the price was very resonable. I agree with Tinman on getting updates and waiting times, but I did tell Jon to take his time with the build and also if he has every customer phoning up wanting photos, it takes up valuable building time so now I just let him get on with it.
-
Pete Your bass looks superb, the wood on the top and back you are having on it looks very much like the piece I nearly had for my 6 string. I'll get you photos when I'm up there later to pick mine up, whenever that will be It seems like mine is on a rolling 2 week finish time at the moment.
