Manchester Studio needed for this weekend (30th Nov and 1st Dec)
cheddatom replied to bassfunk's topic in General Discussion
I'm in Talke Pitts, ST7 1PW, takes about 40 minutes from central manchester but obviously it depends on traffic and where abouts in Manchester you're travelling from. I could free up the weekend for £100/day no problem -
I never met him but like others had great conversations and lots of helpful advice. A great guy, and you're right, it's never been the same without him!

I play drums in a few different bands, and we always keep it quiet except for my rock band where I absolutely smash them, because this way everyone has more fun. There's nothing wrong with rehearsing loud as long as you have ear protection!

I'd just say you want to make sure you'll get a cut of any profits before you invest - get a contract or something
-
Yeh put your effects first, then the thumpinator, then the limiter, then the amp
I think you missed me ripping it out of the ODB-3 haha. Si
When I realised Jon Stockman is using an ODB-3 I stopped trying to defend the pedal... the battle is already won.
B7K as stated here - http://sheponbass.co...n-stockman.html
cheers Shep - I'd actually read that before and forgotten!

I think if you have a dirty pedal but you don't like the sound of it without a clean blend, then yeh, maybe you have the wrong pedal, but, maybe you just like the effect of clean in parallel with dirt, which a lot of bassists do. It's not always that the pedal is sucking low end (although you read that a lot) sometimes it's that you want a bit of punch at the same time as horrible dirty mush. A while back I asked the guy from Karnivool if he ran a clean blend on his board, and he said no, you don't need to if the pedal is good enough. Fair point - but he's running an ODB3 with built in clean blend! Awesome sound though. I saw them again at Nottingham on Friday and got talking to him after. He was raving about some darkglass pedal. I was a little drunk so don't remember which one but I really want to find out!

Things you don't want to hear before a gig....
cheddatom replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
The worst one we had was a pub where absolutely everyone was standing outside, and we were alone in a hall. The guy asked us to do two hour long sets, ended up playing to no-one until 12:30. Oh actually, a battle of the bands in wolverhampton, you weren't allowed to use your own rig, there were 2 guitar amps and a bass amp, and my standard rig (in a 3 peice) was to use a guitar amp as well as a bass amp, so I set up like that. The organiser turned off the guitar amp and forbade me from using it because no other bassists did!
I've been told by drummers that, although sticks are louder, It takes more energy to play with rods than sticks. The last time our drummer played with rods (to keep the volume down), he ended up dripping with sweat after the gig, even though he sounded a lot quieter than usual. That energy transferred to the whole bands performance and we played and sounded better than ever.
Depends, my rods are about as heavy as my sticks, and I can get them to go just as loud too Also, I don't mind playing without soundcheck. If you sound good at rehearsal, it would take a really sh*t soundman to give you a sh*t live sound, and I know they exist, but no amount of checking will help! -
Sorry I don't get to spend a lot of time in here, and I would not blame anyone for ignoring this as I hardly ever get to listen to other people's posts in this section. Anyway, I would appreciate any thoughts on my two latest mixes here: https://soundcloud.com/rifffactoryrecordings-1 If anyone in the midlands wants a recording doing please get in touch
I could play power chords I suppose...
Yep, try it! I often play power chords with a bit of distortion for a massive sound. Otherwise play the line an octave up with an octave down effect, or distortion etc. Simply boosting the volume won't fill out the sound IMO.

Very interesting! Just on the subject of a controller... I was going to make one for a video project by assigning different keys on a keyboard to different functions, and then dismantling a USB keyboard and replacing the buttons with foot switches in a box. I thought that might be a simple way for you to go

nice one! That's a pretty valuable pedal to be gigging! Do you find the bypass OK? And do you bother with a clean blend or just use the mixed settings on it?

Digitech iStomp now only £49. And all models free!
cheddatom replied to fretmeister's topic in Effects
I'm trying to figure out if you could use this with a PC and Itunes - can't find it on the digitech site, it just says you need an IOS device, does anyone know? -
which whammy is that?

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?

I've been rehearsing in a room at the back of where I work for well over 3 years. A few different bands practise there and we were always very loud until we received our first ever complaint a few months back. The guy said that his kid goes to bed at 6:30pm so when we turn up at 7:30 and play loud it wakes him up and stops him getting back to sleep. I highly doubt this as his house is a good 200 yards away from the room we're using, but either way he was clearly pissed off. Even though it seemed a bit unreasonable, we decided to turn down, and I gave him a card so he can call me if he has a problem in future. No more complaints since. It's just easier to get along sometimes! -
I actually like the drives but you have to get pretty creative with the EQ modules (IE not just the tone controls on the drive model)
Yeah I have a clean blend with the OD chanel. I think it's modelled on the OD2 pedal but not totally sure without looking.
Yeh, so the OD2 doesn't have a clean blend built into it, you'd have to use a seperate blender pedal. The ODB3 is the only boss pedal I know has a clean blend, and this wouldn't do what you are after. I like the OD2 clean-blended on bass, great pedal, not sure what other pedals are our there which sound similar and already have a clean blend, sorry!
-
the bass big muff is probably closest to the muff model, but none of the big muffs are very pricey. I would see if you can try the different models out in a local shop to find the one you like. No idea which boss pedal that model is supposed to be, there are loads, but you're probably using a clean blend on that patch? Which make make it more complicated to replicate.

Interesting signal issue/where could I put a buffer?...
cheddatom replied to bakerster135's topic in Effects
would it still invert the phase when bypassed? -
I think the Zoom has several different kinds of each effect you mention. Each kind is generally modelled on an actual pedal, so if you like the sounds you have, this would be a good place to start.

Envelope filters that can handle a very hot input signal
cheddatom replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
yeh, fair enough, it just means you'd have to keep re-setting your pedal board each time you swap bass. If you mainly just use one bass then I guess you'd want it to work with all pedals on full output. -

would you not just turn down your bass? -
One man's reasonable is anothers fortune! I guess it can't hurt to get a quote

I don't have a lot of money so was hoping for something off the shelf
