1. that's very interesting discreet. They seem bigger than the others I've been looking at, I might just get that Ebay deal if I can get all the way to Edinburgh to pick them up. I have no short-list in mind nor favorite brands. I want the flattest response possible, and hopefully plenty of low end at volumes so I don't have to employ my sub.
2. IME you just have to get used to your system. For example, my monitors at home are not great. They're too bright and lack bass. I use the EQ on my little mixer to compensate somewhat, but basically I know that if it sounds a bit harsh in the highs on my system, it'll sound allright on most other systems. I added a sub to compensate for the lack of bass, which really works for me, but I've been told by pros that this is an absolute no-no
3. From what I've read, it sounds as though the KRKs accentuate the highs and lows at the expense of mids. I have a mate with KRKs, I'll check them out tonight.
4. Twigman - I've heard a lot of bad things about the KRKs, do your mixes seem to translate to other system well? on Ebay I've found the following 2nd hand stuff, but can't find too much info about them: acoustic studio minitor series 3311 event 2020 v1 Adam A7 Spirit Absolute Hafler M5
5. yes, nearfields sorry... also active or passive, I don't care, I have a fairly decent amp
6. Yo, I'm hoping for some really good studio monitors for under £350 I realise it's a big ask, but that's my budget. I don't mind buying used. What do you recommend?
7. it's interesting to hear there's no low end on the kick. I'll have to have another listen tonight, but I thought my kick sound was allright, and I've not used anything to artificially create low end.
8. In my mix the acoustic is automated up and down, but in the heavier sections it's hardly there at all
9. Creepjoint's first gig in ages. This is the first song of the set, the whole thing is on youtube
10. I thought the OP was fairly simple... Used to live in the US where there was a vibrant covers-band scene. Now lives in Denmark where there's no scene. What's it like in the UK? Well, as far as covers go I am told people are getting work every weekend. I try to avoid these pubs though. In my folk band we're getting paying gigs as much as we want, even having to turn some down, there's loads of work! In my original rock band we struggle to get an un-paid support slot
11. Hah, I can't remember if I voted for D or E now! I think it was E I've really enjoyed this, it was great to hear so many different takes on our song. Hopefully I'll be able to take part in the next few mix competitions to show what I can do!
12. I have to admit I've been mixing with a limiter on the main output. I can always take it off if it's going somewhere else for mastering, but I feel it gives me a clearer picture of where it'll be as an "end product". I guess the best way to approach this is to get the mix sounding as good as you can before you start doing any master compression at all, but this method does have me working a lot quicker. More experience required!
13. did you think the drums sounded distant on my original mix? I thought the intros were all very good actually. It was the one part of the song where everyone put something creative on to it, and where I initially thought I'd differentiate between them, but after listening at home (adjusting my fader as I went :-p ) I had to go for the one which had an OK drum sound and was well balanced overall.
14. What about with the OC-2 on it's own? I wonder if it's cos the bottle rocket is true bypass where the other pedals have buffers. I know you said it wasn't an issue of the order of the pedals, but when you have the bottle rocket before the OC-2, so there's always a buffer at the end of the loop, do you get the same problem?
15.
I think some of the vocal and other parts were recorded incredibly quietly so they were easily missed(!) I had to normalise some stems to get them to a usable level. Cracking tune though.
Sorry about that, he has such a range, going from quiet breathy parts to mental screaming. After watching the video Si linked I'll be recording two tracks at once, 20db apart, and then editing those together.
16. I've voted... B does have a good drum sound, but it's all drums! While it's a nice ego trip for me being the drummer, I didn't think it was as well balanced as some of the others. There's some really creative stuff on these mixes. It makes me regret not playing about more, especially with the intro.
17. OK, I have a short list but don't want to vote yet. I have to say, I'm not a big fan of 'A' but jesus what a massive bass sound! Nice one whoever A is! How long do we get to vote?
18. We shipped out a parcel containing 2 boxes a couple of weeks ago. The customer got a parcel with one box in it. The courier has re-packed the parcel after f***ing it up. To get any recompense I had to spend half an hour on their online claim form, explaining to them that they damaged it themselves and the damaged remains were probably in their depot. No reponse yet. I guess they make it as difficult as possible to put people off claiming
19. I'm not really aware of the theory, it's just I've been told in the past that changing the wires round on one end of a jack cable would flip the phase... and I honestly thought I'd had it off a lecturer at uni. Oh well, it's not the first time I've found out something I learned at uni was bollocks.
20. good call Bigwan Why wouldn't flipping the wires around on one end of a jack lead work to flip the phase?
21. I don't think that's the case at all. It must be more to do with what's interesting to talk about. The beauty in music - how it makes you feel personally, is not easily expressed or shared, where as comparing gear and "chops" is...? could be talking bollocks
22. could be a phase thing? EDIT: Oh, beaten to it. It's an easy test anyway, if you have an old jack lead you can take apart.
23. Thanks for the George Massenburg video Si, I got around to watching it yesterday, it's very interesting
24. I've always used my dirt and comp pedals in the loop of the NS-2 with delays after it
25. It's not just about price. I've seen people regurgitate advice they've read online, on forums like this, without even trying it for themselves. Judge your gear with your ears, or in the case of a bass with your hands too. Obviously durability is important too, but if you take care of your gear, it should be fine. Apparently the behringer plastic pedals are very durable indeed, but I don't own any so wouldn't know. I would buy them if I allowed my pedal addiction to grip me again
