1. I did 10 minutes on this last night. Very interesting way to record the kick drum and it sounds fantastic!
2. sounds cool! I hope you manage to get some recordings.
3.
Super mega tiny set up for a HipHop/Funk session I've been booked for this month. Only rehearsal before the show is tomorrow... But I already know how much of a funk factory this set up is...
That sounds interesting! Who are you playing with?
4. well, I play in a reggae/hip-hop type band. I have plenty of stems of them if you want them. Nothing country though! I was hoping for something very different to my usual material so that I could join in with a mix this month.
5. I used to drop tune and use a capo for certain songs which meant I didn't have to swap basses.
6. the Rogers look to me out of my league! Well I have done extensive listening in my current room with that set up, and I'm happy with how my mixes translate these days... when I move to my new room, maybe I should just take my current system, get used to the room, and then see if I still fancy new monitors
7. Equator D5s do seem to have a good repuation online, but is it all initial hype? How long have they been around? They're right at the top of my budget, I'd have to save for a couple of months for those.
8. I had a listen to KRK RP5s last night... sounds pretty good! For some reason I'd been skipping over the Alesis stuff on Ebay. I obviously have a subconscious prejudice about the brand. I'll check them out
9. I have plenty of stems but got mine mixed for March... I'm going to enter this month though, I'm determined.
10. I could drive to Edinburgh but not until Tuesday... not sure it's worth the journey. I do get free petrol so that wouldn't be a big concern There's a pair of Event ELPs in the for sale section - any opinions?
11. that's very interesting discreet. They seem bigger than the others I've been looking at, I might just get that Ebay deal if I can get all the way to Edinburgh to pick them up. I have no short-list in mind nor favorite brands. I want the flattest response possible, and hopefully plenty of low end at volumes so I don't have to employ my sub.
12. IME you just have to get used to your system. For example, my monitors at home are not great. They're too bright and lack bass. I use the EQ on my little mixer to compensate somewhat, but basically I know that if it sounds a bit harsh in the highs on my system, it'll sound allright on most other systems. I added a sub to compensate for the lack of bass, which really works for me, but I've been told by pros that this is an absolute no-no
13. From what I've read, it sounds as though the KRKs accentuate the highs and lows at the expense of mids. I have a mate with KRKs, I'll check them out tonight.
14. Twigman - I've heard a lot of bad things about the KRKs, do your mixes seem to translate to other system well? on Ebay I've found the following 2nd hand stuff, but can't find too much info about them: acoustic studio minitor series 3311 event 2020 v1 Adam A7 Spirit Absolute Hafler M5
15. yes, nearfields sorry... also active or passive, I don't care, I have a fairly decent amp
16. Yo, I'm hoping for some really good studio monitors for under £350 I realise it's a big ask, but that's my budget. I don't mind buying used. What do you recommend?
17. it's interesting to hear there's no low end on the kick. I'll have to have another listen tonight, but I thought my kick sound was allright, and I've not used anything to artificially create low end.
18. In my mix the acoustic is automated up and down, but in the heavier sections it's hardly there at all
19. Creepjoint's first gig in ages. This is the first song of the set, the whole thing is on youtube
20. I thought the OP was fairly simple... Used to live in the US where there was a vibrant covers-band scene. Now lives in Denmark where there's no scene. What's it like in the UK? Well, as far as covers go I am told people are getting work every weekend. I try to avoid these pubs though. In my folk band we're getting paying gigs as much as we want, even having to turn some down, there's loads of work! In my original rock band we struggle to get an un-paid support slot
21. Hah, I can't remember if I voted for D or E now! I think it was E I've really enjoyed this, it was great to hear so many different takes on our song. Hopefully I'll be able to take part in the next few mix competitions to show what I can do!
22. I have to admit I've been mixing with a limiter on the main output. I can always take it off if it's going somewhere else for mastering, but I feel it gives me a clearer picture of where it'll be as an "end product". I guess the best way to approach this is to get the mix sounding as good as you can before you start doing any master compression at all, but this method does have me working a lot quicker. More experience required!
23. did you think the drums sounded distant on my original mix? I thought the intros were all very good actually. It was the one part of the song where everyone put something creative on to it, and where I initially thought I'd differentiate between them, but after listening at home (adjusting my fader as I went :-p ) I had to go for the one which had an OK drum sound and was well balanced overall.
24. What about with the OC-2 on it's own? I wonder if it's cos the bottle rocket is true bypass where the other pedals have buffers. I know you said it wasn't an issue of the order of the pedals, but when you have the bottle rocket before the OC-2, so there's always a buffer at the end of the loop, do you get the same problem?
25.
I think some of the vocal and other parts were recorded incredibly quietly so they were easily missed(!) I had to normalise some stems to get them to a usable level. Cracking tune though.
Sorry about that, he has such a range, going from quiet breathy parts to mental screaming. After watching the video Si linked I'll be recording two tracks at once, 20db apart, and then editing those together.
