1. For me it's just slightly above the guy in the street with panpipes and a backing track
2. that wouldn't power a speaker
3. I have a lot of high end in my sound. Not "tweeter highs" but "guitar amp highs" if you know what I mean? I use an NS-2 and it's perfect... My problem was hiss but also feedback as I use a lot of distortion
4. I think sometimes you get an over-abundance of musicians in the audience, and a majority of them would rather watch you play than dance about. We were supposed to have a gig on Saturday night in Salford. The headline act was bringing a drum kit and backline but never showed up!! 2 hours drive, 1 hour waiting around, all for nothing. Why would a band do this? I hope it was a f*** up at promoter level rather than fellow musicians screwing us over.
5. I think a lot of multi-effects units and practise gadgets have built in rythms, but I wouldn't expect them to come with a power-amp. It seems to me you wouldn't want to use that sort of basic rythm pattern live.
6. nice! What's the grey pedal hidden away in the middle?
7. A lot of people think that age correlates to musical experience. Also, a lot of people think that how long you've been playing correlates to ability. I've not had the ageism described in the OP, but I have had people be impressed just by the fact that i've been playing guitar for 20 years. In reality, I know people who've been playing for less than 5 years who are miles better than me. The amount of time you've been playing for has no correlation to your ability IMO.
8. All the Moog pedals, Human Gear Animato, Boomerang phrase looper pedal thingy... Can't think of anything else
9.
Ahh, the fabled 'night shot'.. Great pick of effects, I might add. How's the old Ibanez flanger on bass? And what's that black Boss pedal with the pink stripe?
Yeh, I wish more people would do the "night shot". When I get more power, it's going to look like you're flying over new york The Ibanez is an SS10 chorus-distortion. It's actually my favorite dirt pedal on both bass and guitar. You can have the two effects in either series of parallel. It's very responsive to dynamics, really boosts the high mids, and gets very very nasty when you dig in. I really want to buy some more because i'm worried it'll break soon and i've no idea how to re-create the sound. The black pedal with a pink strip is an arion analogue delay which I use to make oscillations
10. I think if you're just playing roots, following the guitar, have the standard "thumpy" tone etc... Well, you are pretty un-noticable. The guitarist might as well stick an octave pedal on. And your job is easy. I'd say at least 80% of bassists fit the above bill, so that's the reputation all bassists get. I don't mind
11.
When I'm writing those three things are so intrinsically linked that they all develop at the same time.
that happens to me but I guess I just prefer the stuff which starts with beats. I end up with weird time signiatures which I hardly ever imagine with a melody at the same time... no idea why!
12. most of my best ideas actually start with beats, then bass, then a melody
13. I was having fun with this lot last night. It's ages since I made time to play on my own plugged in, and it was so much fun!! I have my sounds down perfectly now. If only I had some more PSUs I could add on my jamman, slicer, XXL, OC2... Maybe it's best that I don't
14. I imagine a lot of melodies. Sometimes it's very easy to translate them from my head to an instrument. Sometimes it's almost impossible. My back-up plan is whistling into a little recorder. The most frustrating thing is when you're trying to get one of these melodies out, but your limitations on the chosen instrument distract you from the melody in mind, and you end up forgetting what you were aiming for. Thankfully the older I get (but I don't practise much, or listen to music) the easier it is to get these melodies out.
15.
I think most of you seem to have missed the point that "The Customer is ALWAYS right".
Correct, and in this case the Landlord is the customer!
16. What's a filter factory lfo?
17. if it's a new thing then new strings would be the first test I think
18. I've done it before. Mic-pre into the effects return on my peavey combo. It mixes the effects return with the main input which is my bass. I used the mic pre to control the level of the kick. I also used EQ to cut out most of the low end from the kick mic 'cos I was worried about f***ing the speaker. It seemed to work fine. Also, when I started playing drums I used a guitar amp, cut most of the low end, and used pedals on the kick - envelope filter and delay being my favorites.
19. I've had this problem in a couple of amps. Replacing the power caps seemed to be the most common suggestion, and did work for me. No idea if this is good advice or not!
20. The OP is being modest. I've seen this rant in the flesh and "small" is not the word you'd use to describe it. Without a doubt the most desirable rant i've ever come accross. If I had the cash...
21. well it deffinitely wouldn't look as cool :-p
22. yeh more options for parallel blending etc would be very useful. I don't know of any multis that actually do this?
23. I'm pretty much the same as seashell, unless the band specifies otherwise.
