We need to define "sound" and "tone" really. For me, the word sound is too vague, but even "tone" takes into account all sorts of performance factors such as where you're plucking with your right hand etc. On the one hand, I could "sound" or have the same "tone" as jaco, simply using a squire jazz, a decent chorus pedal, and an amp with flexible EQ. On the other hand, I wouldn't be able to re-produce the performance aspects to his sound. Or looking at it from the gear point of view, I don't need an SVT or a MATAMP to sound like i'm playing through one. ...so I don't think i'm really disagreeing with you Prosebass! -

Each photographer has their own style. However, some photographers use filters and other effects to dramatically change the original image. Sometimes this requires special equipment to acheive. While a style may be recognisable accross a group of pictures by the same photographer, clearly all of the pictures don't share the same effect/hue/look the same. So, while Les Claypool has a style all of his own, and you might be able to recognise that accross his multitude of tones, in no way do all of his tones sound the same. Therefore, the tone is not in the fingers. -
I use an NS-2 for this, and I think it works fine. That being said, I've never used another hardware gate, other than in the cheapo behringer compressors - seemed OK.

For delays, it depends what you're after. Vintage, modern, analogue, digital, looping, reverse, tap tempo etc etc A good cheap starter is the Marshall Echohead and it sounds great.

no Just because the actual footswitch is momentary, does not mean that the bypass function of the zoom is momentary. If you plugged a latching footswitch into the Zoom, it would keep switching to bypass and back. It would do the same if you bought an FS01 and kept it pressed down. EDIT: On pages 21 and 22 of the manual, it explains how to set it up. It's pretty simple. Follow those instructions, and when you press the (momentary) footswitch once, it will bypass. Press it again and it will turn the effect(s) on.

If your distortion patch is A1, it will display A1 when you're on distortion. So, when your guitarist counts in the nice quiet acoustic number, make sure it's on A2, and you'll be fine. I can see why some people might prefer an ON/OFF LED but personally i've always been fine to use it this way. As far as I know, with an external footswitch it will behave how you like, but just check in the manual - you can download it for free from the zoom site and do a Find (CTRL+F) for "bypass".

You have to remember the patches. They all have a letter and a number. So, you might set A1 as your dirty sound, A2 as your clean sound, A3 as your filter, A4 as a copy of A2, A5 as a chorus etc etc The display displays the letter/number combination. -

Also how many combined sounds can you use at once?[/quote] You basically have to set up a series of patches, and each one of these patches has one or more (or none) of the effects modules activated, with your settings saved. Then you switch up and down the patches. If you set every other patch to a "core sound" it makes it pretty easy to use in a live setting. It has a couple of drawbacks - I don't think you can use the synth and drive modules at the same time for example. It's worth having a quick read of the manual, as you'll HAVE to if you buy one. -

just butting in as i'm a big Les fan... I think you could recognise Claypool's style through any rig, but style is not tone. He's had so many different tones over the years. Of all the players I can think of, he's the last person i'd expect to read "the tone's all in the fingers" about. He uses all manner of basses and effects and has created such a wide variety of tone over the years... Unless you were a musician I doubt you could tell it's all the same guy. -
I bought some speaker leads from Nick. They arrived as soon as humanly possible, in great Nick, just as described. Cheers!!
