1. Karma Audio do some very cheap condensors. I got one of their tiny little compact pack of two condensors to use for overheads and they're great! I think it cost $40ish. You could get them and 4 used sm57s and you'd have a great set. You could do with clips for the toms and snare though.
2. I have the Red5s, and I like them, but the clips are sh*t. They've all fallen apart now. You need patience and a tiny screwdriver to put them back together. I'm using them for recording so I can just attach them to boom stands, but for live I don't think they'd last.
3.
What does the slicer do exactly? Is it kinda like a long delay?
It's like a tremolo, but it does interesting rythms instead of just a constant repeat. It "slices" dynamic cuts in a rythmic way. There are a few harmonic modes too, which will harmonise the input as well as produce the rythmic pattern.
4. cool, i'll give it a go tomorrow. I don't get to have the rhythms as loud as i's like as it really pushes my amp, but now I think that might be because it's before a LOAD of dirt and compression.
5. ooo, I didn't think about putting the slicer at the end of the chain!
6. If you EQ it to sound like it does through his amp, you'll both be happy, surely? At least roll the top end off. Guitar cabs don't really put out much above 5KHz, but I bet the BOSS does!
7. Just in case the relevant mod misses the other thread - I'm sure you can get a script to integrate into the forum which will automatically resize images to a maximum size. EDIT: I notice the forum is in php. I know imagemagick can be run using php.
8.
It's an abbreviation of 'accompanying'. Mainly used by jazz musicians.
Thankyou! There's another "comping" in recording. I've no idea what it's an abbreviation for, but it's when they stick together loads of different takes to get a good one.
9. What's "comping"?
10. If you want to record some clean guitar, and then play it through the axe-fx, you will need some impedence matching equipment as linked to make the line-out from your computer/Edirol act like a guitar. Otherwise if you make all your patches for the line level signal, then you plug your guitar straight in, it could sound quite different. EDIT: having said that, I put line-outs into my pedals all the time, no problem, it's just I wouldn't shape my live sounds based on that.
11.
I have Reaper on both Mac & PC & they're just about identical. I like the Mac because it's a lot less prone to crashing or getting a virus.
I would suggest that you keep a computer for purely music purposes IE don't connect the f***er to the net, this way you don't risk viruses whether you're mac or PC.
12. I think it's important to recognise that these threads are getting views and downloads, even if they're not getting comments.
13. or have the home page in the 3rd person? Apparently "welcome" is the worst word to start with on a homepage. I was told that by an SEO "expert" at one of these seminars. I've no idea if it's truly valid. I think the plectrums at the bottom are very sexy. On the shorter pages, they really complete the layout. I'd be tempted to have them as a bottom "frame" (I know you're not allowed to use frames any more, but there's a way with CSS i'm sure) so that they stay there and you only scroll through the content in the middle. It's a nice site anyway! I haven't listened to your music as i'm at work.
14. I record for friends all the time. I always make it clear that I might say something that might piss them off, but to not take anything personally. I would have told them to re-do it on the night!!
15. you should probably try some dirt in the feedback looper too, but if it bypasses the pedals when you switch it, instead of just cutting the feedback, then you'd lose a dirt pedal
16.
This is a point that comes up in professional CD reviewing, there's simply too much music around to possibly listen to it all and have an informed opinion on it - and I think the point about personal taste is also relevant here. RE my own postings I know I've been doing this sh*t for a long time now and I only do it to point people in its general direction - if I get a couple of positive or negative comments here then hey it's nice to think someone enjoyed it (or not) - I'm all for criticism, and yes I'm my own hardest critic - plenty of people have said I suck, quite a few like what I do - hey that's life innit? So I don't mind but I think it's good to try and encourage newbies and those really seeking advice - if people can post a bit more in that forum and give friendly but honest feedback I think it would be a positive move - we all know our shortcomings but we can't be blamed for trying, so yes, post a few more responses if you can peeps. Mike
I find it rediculous when you read a review, and at the end of a review they reviewer says "but it's not really my kind of thing". I personally have absolutely no knowledge of jazz, and so i'd never comment on a jazz performance other than to say "that was great" or the like. FWIW i've watched a few of your videos, and listened to the recordings, enjoyed them, and never commented!! I think the main reason for that is I have nothing remotely interesting to say on it. It's like those threads you read with great interest but never post in. I know some poeple like to say "+1" or "that's ace", but I feel that's a pointless post. Maybe i'm wrong and should start commenting on everything I listen to?
17. I think with regards to recording/mixing etc i've had a couple of great discussions as a result of me listening to someone else, or them listening to me. When I had a CD player in my car, i used to download people's tracks at work, burn the onto CD, then listen on my way home. That way I didn't have to log into BC at home. I would only ever comment if I thought it was really good, or if I thought I had a decent opinion to add. I don't have a CD player any more so I don't do it. I go on the muse messageboard, and there's a "plug your own band" thread on there. I try to listen to as many as possible when I get a day off, but I would only comment on 1/10 of what I listen to, because the other 9/10 is either sh*t or just not my thing. EDIT: A great example, I uploaded a song I was working on as I wanted comments on the drum sounds. This prompted 5imon to reply with some very helpful comments, that lead to a long conversation about recording/mixing which taught me a hell of a lot (anyone can learn from 5imon!!!).
18. Yeh the OP sounds like he wants to just use the speaker from the warwick as an extension. I was just suggesting that it might be more efficient for each cab to have it's own power amp, given that he's going to be carrying around the warwick power amp anyway.
19. I think there's an effect return on the warwick? Use that! If you put the effects send of the ashdown into the instrument input of the warwick, it'll probably distort.
20. I'm not sure how these are constructed exactly, but I would imagine there's a bolt you can tighten.
21. Would it not be more efficient to slave the combo? If the ashdown has a pre-amp output or effects send or insert point, you could send this to a power amp input on the warwick.
22. I have no problem recording 20 tracks simultaneously on my crap old PC with M-Audio PCI cards. I'm not sure if that's much help though!
...what really hacked me off was I couldn't reinstall Windows XP as the machine had updated itself 'too much' to allow the 'old' version of the OS to be installed - even though it was on the same OS disc I bought it with...!!!
Sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. If you want to reinstall windows, you can do so with any disk. If you're trying to "repair" it might be a different story, but, just format it! I'll not get into the standard PC V Mac debate as I agree with TNIT* - the hardware might as well be the same, so to buy a mac, the OS has to be worth a lot to you. Fair enough if you prefer the Mac OS, there are good and bad points about each. *good to see you back!
23. I use a jackhammer on bass quite a bit too!
He all - has anyone had a chance to try out the TC Electronic Nova Drive yet....
Did you get to try one Dood?
