just a poweramp would be fine. Depending on the type of poweramp you might have to increase the ouput level from the pod a fair bit.

When I was playing bass i'd always have gear-geeks asking me about my pedalboard etc. Since i've been playing drums I don't think anyone's approached me - in two years!! Maybe the old stereotypes don't hold up so well.

Yes I did (although I didn't realise anyone took any notice!). It's pretty cool. Basically I bought the pedal and EXP pedal together because it was the only way I could make that cool vocal sounding wah on the first Audioslave single (can't remember the name). But yeh, after I got over that I started using it in weird ways. It can do some standard wahing but that isn't what it's best at IMO. As far as comparing to the EBS or a Dunlop, I wouldn't know sorry.

I didn't think Dave was saying that the SVT is the only good amp. He was saying it's the only good amp for him. I think the point of the OP was that if you want "that tone" (and that's your tone, not Daves tone, that tone that you like, the really good one) and you have it, then stick with your gear. Sometimes very inconvinient gear is worth it just for getting "that tone". As I said previously it would be close-minded to stick with one amp and never try any others. Why Dave didn't try out the lightweight amps before selling his SVT I have no idea.

However, in the case of bass amps, you can always give the grass a quick try out. I get my sound out of a peavey+behringer+guitar amp + loads of pedals set up. That's my sound, and it isn't broken, so i'm not looking to fix it. As far as i'm aware, the grass doesn't get any greener, but that doesn't mean I would turn my nose up at the chance to try an ampeg. It's just I wouldn't sell my rig without finding a better one first.

Dave - was your main point supposed to be "once you find your sound, stick with it, don't mess about trying other gear because it's lighter/more reliable because it'll never reproduce your sound"? Or was it literally "all amps are sh*t except ampegs"? Either way, a most enjoyable thread.

Heh, Dave it's all just part of the fun you get on internet forums. More provocative posts like yours would be welcomed by me at least!

Hmmm, I had guitar lessons for ages, and when I started on bass it was playing whatever the guitarist told me to. Then I got into real bassists and I feel like I took to playing the bass quite easily. I could do with some lessons now as I realise how much i'm missing out on, but I can't afford them. There are a lot of guitar teachers who also advertise bass lessons, and I would suspect that the majority of these aren't "real bassists".

I played a gig the other day and afterwards asked my neighbour who was playing in a band after us what he thought of the tone. He said he didn't like that "peavey sound". I pressed him on it, and he didn't have any comment on the actual frequency content, dynamics, timbre etc, he just didn't like "that peavey sound". there are all sorts of strange prejudices surrounding gear and tone.

I don't know Jake, I think perhaps more brill cream, is required.

I've been on holiday and only just read this news. I'm not sure what to say. I never met Si but we had lots of interesting conversations, and I will never forget his wisdom and wit. My condolences to all who are affected by this tragic loss.

As long as you reference your mixes on a decent stereo you know well...

If you just want "fat" then octave down, distortion, compression, and maybe chorus are what you want. If you ARE interested in trying all sorts of effects, and learning how to use them and what they do etc, then a multie pedal is the best way to go. If you're on a budget the zoom B2 or B2.1U are very good.
