1. There's no point to "three strikes and you're out" if you don't tell him he's struck!
2. Really? That's never happened to me and i've had 2 different Zoom multis now. Data doesn't fade away over time. It's not as though if you leave your phone for a year the numbers will disappear. That sounds like a proper dodgy fault!! Ray: I don't think vibrations will confuse the electronics.
3. That's ace. I saw Les playing his a few weeks ago. I'd love one! How did you do the fingerboard?
4. You know how we perceive heavier strings to be "beefier", well is that a fact or is it just perception? I like heavy strings, but I wouldn't necessarily say I could tell the difference just by listening. My guitarist for example, really likes Nuno's tone, and can't believe he gets that sort of defined attacky tone with quite light/loose strings. I reckon it's not that big a factor. Does anyone actually know?

TAB

eugh, when I did my degree I took a module specifically to learn to read and I couldn't do it. Obviously if I put my mind to it.... but i'm way too negative. I'll take lessons for it when i'm old and/or afluent.

TAB
No I don't know him. But I still say that if he started you on tab he did you a disservice.
Well, even though he was a great teacher, and probably the nicest guy i'll know, you're probably right. If i'd learned to read from the start I could have considered playing in loads more projects or maybe even getting good and doing sessions or something.
7. You could probably fit them in a shallow case, I think Gator do one.

TAB
Do the little stroke lines only show where the beats are or do they actually show the rhythms? If you were taught using tab, then the teacher is at fault and has done you a major disservice. If you had lessons with me you would learn the notes.
Good point, yeh TAB doesn't show you how long the notes are (if that's what you mean?) My teacher was Joe Dring, you may have heard of him? He's very well known (and paid) in the area. It would have been good to learn to read music properly, but I couldn't say a bad word about him. I tried to read in my teens and couldn't do it.
9.
Its not only cheap comps that are 1u as it goes
Of course! I just couldn't think of a cheap one that's 2U
Just to clarify, and this will sound stupid, but if a tuner/compressor is 1U then you suggest a 2U case because I'm getting two units. Not because a 1U device requires a 2U case? So is the U value the height of the thing? Then the depth varies so best I can do is look at some possible purchases and give myself a bit of room on the depth of the case I choose?
Yeh, basically.
10. The units will have their size on the spec in Us so most compressors* and tuners will be 1U and you'll need a 2U case to put them in. The depth varies too though, and I don't think this is as simple. EDIT: *Cheap compressors!
11. I have a 105 (or 110 maybe) tuned to C# and it's fine. I'm pretty sure it's just your technique. If you have a graphic or parametric EQ you could probably EQ it out (if you don't want to change your technique). My advice would be to get some distortion on the go, and embrace your "click", turning it into hard attack.
12. Heh, it's nice and friendly in here!! IMO for a good slap tone you need a subtle overdrive with tone wide open, and a cab capable of producing the highs you need.
13.
Try putting the limiter before the parallel compression. Set the threshold above the compressor threshold (obviously), that way the compressor doesn't have to deal with the signal peaks and can really work more effectively on shaping the dynamics. Otherwise you are still caning the compressor with the peaks, which you don't limit till afterwards, when it's too late!
Interesting! I'll give that a go, thanks.
14. I honestly think it's an easy fix if it is the micro switches.
15. Most (all?) anlogue distortion pedals will oscillate if you put them in a feedback loop. This might be a better route to go down with bass, rather than trying to modify an oscillating guitar pedal.

TAB
The universality of the system, ct. TAB only works for guitar. Dots work for an infintie variety of instruments. If I have to write a part out for a sax or, alternatively, need to learn a line written originally for a trombone, flute or harp, I can do so without any real difficulty. Also, and more importantly for me, my study material doesn't stop at bass/guitar music but can include everything up to and including a full orchestral score. That's what I mean by it being good for getting you out of a rut. Learning a Coltrane sax solo or Marsalis trumpet part is far more challenging (and useful) than learning a Victor Wooten circus trick any day .
ahhhhhh, I see!!! Ta.
17. I would have thought the FF would destroy your low end. Can you do sound clips?

TAB

I was taught using tab since I was 8 (on guitar). I don't know what you others have been reading but I had plenty of rythmic notation - little stroke lines at the bottom of the tab to denote the beats. I also got numbers to show which finger to use for which note. Fair enough if no pros use it, but it seems perfectly acceptable to me. What am I missing?
19. Do you not loose low end with the Fuzz Factory? EDIT: What do you use the EHX Holy Stain for?
20. I know, I hope I got the first PM in!
21. yeh W7 seems to be going down very well. I have a couple of laptops at work running it fine. I like it!
22. what i've always wanted to create is a multi band distortion with all the controls of a compressor IE attack, sustain, release, threshold for each band. I reckon that's been done before I just haven't seen one.
23. That's the spirit, you never can be too positive. I like the blue bass!
24.
Interesting idea. What if something like the envelope follower of an SPL Transient Designer was used to control the envelope of the distorted signal, thus allowing you to adjust the attack and sustain of the distorted signal as well, similar to the way that unit works?
Good idea!
25.
so something on the input to read the level which then changes a resistance to the output?
yeh, so your bass sounds horribly distorted but the original dynamics are there.
