1. Paul, I laughed out loud in my office when i'm supposed to be working, so nice one!
2. chaining two OD pedals together won't necessarily mean an increase in volume, as one pedal drives the next to distort more. More distorted doesn't mean more loud. It might not be the sound you're after though.
3. the only thing you can do without a copy of C5 is take the audio from the audio folder (which will be wavs) and import it into your chosen DAW, then mess around until it's all in time.
4. Normalisation can mean bringing the peak level of a wave up to a set level. It can also mean reducing the dynamic range of a wave. I'm not sure what you're on about here. Either way when sticking together performances you're better off doing it manually IMHO.
5. I don't know what sort of normalisation you're talking about. I do this kind of turd polishing a lot though. If I have a lot of CPU power available, I keep each take on a seperate track. Then cut out the bits from each track I don't want. Then use the mixer to level them out. If I dont have the CPU power, I will cut them all up, but then when done move them all onto one track. If the levels are out I sort that by adjusting the gain of each individual cut.
6. I would try to use the one VXL for both gain stages. It might be as easy as using the volume know on your bass to clean up the signal, then turning it up to the max for the heavier tone. If you loose low end when your volume knob's down you could use a compressor or limiter at the end of the chain to try and sort that out. I have an OD pedal I really the the sounds of on low and medium gain. I use an EQ pedal turned up before it to drive it into the medium gain sound.
7.
This is what I'm saying - £70 on a multieffects will be cool for a bit of practicing, but if he gets asked to play in a band next week, he'd be better off with the bigger amp. Gotta try to think ahead with buying, even when you're starting out.
No, I want the last word!
8.
Don't be so darn modest.
Is this your motto for life?
9.
Sure, but I think the point is that there's not much point in distinguishing between good and bad effects if you're going to put them through a £70 amp.
He's asking for reccomendations for distortion and wah pedals. I don't think he's talking about boutique true bypass £200 dirt boxes. Yeh, you'll never get any low end out of a crappy practice amp, and obviously you won't be able to practice with a band but if you want to play with effects while you're learning and building up a rig, then £70 on a multi-effects pedal is a good idea, as opposed to £150 on a distortion and wah, or saving up for 2 years before you can afford a decent amp. Most rehersal spaces provide a bass amp. Having said all that you can get 100W 15" combos out of the paper for £60 on a good day.
10. He didn't say he was in a band. All I will say is that my most productive years learning guitar and bass were spent practicing through a zoom multi-effects pedal into my headphones - could be the right choice for the OP.
11.
No - Toasted's correct. Properties of germanium semiconductors are suceptible to change with temperatures & can therefore alter tone.
Interesting!
12.
It'll also sound different depending on room temperature - FYI.
Is that a joke?
13.
It's the new Euromonth. Did you not get the memo from Brussels?
Next they'll be telling us we're not allowed to use our home-grown crooked carrots for anal pleasure.
14.
"You also have a month to decide whether you like it or not, If after two weeks you decide it isn't what you were looking for send it back for a full refund, no questions asked."
I swear there's 4 weeks in a month?
15. My girlfriend got me one for christmas. I'm not sure if it's good value for money, I didn't choose it or know how much it cost, but..... It takes around 30 seconds to boot up, which very very occasionally annoys me. This is the only downside. What's amazing is the quality of the mic. Using this mic i've recorded acoustic gigs, unplugged electric guitar/bass ideas, piano in a garage, loads of random samples for use on the new Creep Joint album. When she got it me I thought "Oh sh*t, she's spent some money and this won't be any better than my phone" but it really is, the mic's amazing and the recording is very high quality.
16.
Hi guys. I thought I should chip in... Firstly, I'm sorry to here that you have had a bad experience with GAK.CO.UK. I can only apologise on behalf of our internet team. As you probably know, we have only just started to advertise stock availability on the site and, in the majority of cases, it is working astonishingly well. However, as with any stock system, mistakes can occur and we are trying to minimise these errors where possible. My recommendation to you is give me a call or drop me an email when you want to order. I will happily deal with your order and physically check stock before taking any payment. Our policy is to match web prices whenever possible and on 99% of products, that won't be a problem. Mark Packham GAK Basses [email protected] 01273 665427
Just incase you haven't done so, it's always good to have more in stock than it lists on your site. I don't mean LOADS more, just whatever cash flow will allow.
17. From the ammount of complaints i've seen on this board about GAKs online stock system I would bet on them having already started work on a new/improved system.
18. To be fair it's quite difficult to get a "live stock feed" system going and working well.
19. or the effects send into the zoom, then use the headphone out from the zoom. You might have to plug a patch cable into the return to mute the amp.
20. Thanks very much! That's a big help. I've started a new machine just for these two songs and so far it's working OK, it's just this new PC has DDR2 and I only have half a gig!! I have about 5 Gb spare DDR lying around the house too. What a downer. I'll back up the dll and replace it tonight, see if that works on the original machine.
21.
Shall I go on about pay to play gigs again, you know, about choosing, managing and making the most of them, about non pecuniary benefits and about not moaning when you know the score? eh? Shall I?
no! it makes me cry.
22. So after going on about how stable my XP Cubase Reason system has been for the last 2 or 3 years it's finally failed me just before finishing an album. Everything's working fine apart from Rewire and I have 2 songs on this album which i've used Reason for, and I need to get them finished!! Reason (version 2.5) works on it's own. Cubase is fine. There's been no change to my system since I last used reason successfully. I did a system restore to a month ago just incase. I've installed Reason 4 in the hope it would help but it's the same. I really don't want to reinstall Cubase 'cos i'm not sure if I have all the installation files for all the plug-ins i've used, and i'm very worried about inadvertently changing one of the other songs.
23. some cheapo pedals can be really good. I've got an arion auto wah that's really funky, and not noisy at all.
24. try one of the behringer flangers in a shop, they're cheap enough!
25. I thought you might be thinking of using a sequence/backing track.
