This is what I'm saying - £70 on a multieffects will be cool for a bit of practicing, but if he gets asked to play in a band next week, he'd be better off with the bigger amp. Gotta try to think ahead with buying, even when you're starting out.
No, I want the last word!

Why do musos stick with their sh*t bands?
Don't be so darn modest.
Is this your motto for life? -
Sure, but I think the point is that there's not much point in distinguishing between good and bad effects if you're going to put them through a £70 amp.
He's asking for reccomendations for distortion and wah pedals. I don't think he's talking about boutique true bypass £200 dirt boxes. Yeh, you'll never get any low end out of a crappy practice amp, and obviously you won't be able to practice with a band but if you want to play with effects while you're learning and building up a rig, then £70 on a multi-effects pedal is a good idea, as opposed to £150 on a distortion and wah, or saving up for 2 years before you can afford a decent amp. Most rehersal spaces provide a bass amp. Having said all that you can get 100W 15" combos out of the paper for £60 on a good day.

He didn't say he was in a band. All I will say is that my most productive years learning guitar and bass were spent practicing through a zoom multi-effects pedal into my headphones - could be the right choice for the OP.
No - Toasted's correct. Properties of germanium semiconductors are suceptible to change with temperatures & can therefore alter tone.
Interesting!
It'll also sound different depending on room temperature - FYI.
Is that a joke?

My girlfriend got me one for christmas. I'm not sure if it's good value for money, I didn't choose it or know how much it cost, but..... It takes around 30 seconds to boot up, which very very occasionally annoys me. This is the only downside. What's amazing is the quality of the mic. Using this mic i've recorded acoustic gigs, unplugged electric guitar/bass ideas, piano in a garage, loads of random samples for use on the new Creep Joint album. When she got it me I thought "Oh sh*t, she's spent some money and this won't be any better than my phone" but it really is, the mic's amazing and the recording is very high quality.
Hi guys. I thought I should chip in... Firstly, I'm sorry to here that you have had a bad experience with GAK.CO.UK. I can only apologise on behalf of our internet team. As you probably know, we have only just started to advertise stock availability on the site and, in the majority of cases, it is working astonishingly well. However, as with any stock system, mistakes can occur and we are trying to minimise these errors where possible. My recommendation to you is give me a call or drop me an email when you want to order. I will happily deal with your order and physically check stock before taking any payment. Our policy is to match web prices whenever possible and on 99% of products, that won't be a problem. Mark Packham GAK Basses 01273 665427
Just incase you haven't done so, it's always good to have more in stock than it lists on your site. I don't mean LOADS more, just whatever cash flow will allow.
-
From the ammount of complaints i've seen on this board about GAKs online stock system I would bet on them having already started work on a new/improved system.
-
To be fair it's quite difficult to get a "live stock feed" system going and working well.

or the effects send into the zoom, then use the headphone out from the zoom. You might have to plug a patch cable into the return to mute the amp.

Thanks very much! That's a big help. I've started a new machine just for these two songs and so far it's working OK, it's just this new PC has DDR2 and I only have half a gig!! I have about 5 Gb spare DDR lying around the house too. What a downer. I'll back up the dll and replace it tonight, see if that works on the original machine.
Shall I go on about pay to play gigs again, you know, about choosing, managing and making the most of them, about non pecuniary benefits and about not moaning when you know the score? eh? Shall I?
no! it makes me cry.

So after going on about how stable my XP Cubase Reason system has been for the last 2 or 3 years it's finally failed me just before finishing an album. Everything's working fine apart from Rewire and I have 2 songs on this album which i've used Reason for, and I need to get them finished!! Reason (version 2.5) works on it's own. Cubase is fine. There's been no change to my system since I last used reason successfully. I did a system restore to a month ago just incase. I've installed Reason 4 in the hope it would help but it's the same. I really don't want to reinstall Cubase 'cos i'm not sure if I have all the installation files for all the plug-ins i've used, and i'm very worried about inadvertently changing one of the other songs.

some cheapo pedals can be really good. I've got an arion auto wah that's really funky, and not noisy at all.
-
try one of the behringer flangers in a shop, they're cheap enough!
-
I thought you might be thinking of using a sequence/backing track.

You can get a free DAW for recording - Reaper, or if you want something more expensive, PM me. All i'm saying is, if budget is a primary concern, then crezs USB interface will be all you need if used with your mixer and it's only £40. You could spend your change on another MIDI controller to help with your live performance. Otherwise, yeh the Fast Track is fine. When you get an interface you'll be able to get a lead that goes direct from an output to the input on an A/B box. I bought phono to jack leads off Ebay. Wouldn't you want to run your bass and your mac sometimes though? If so you'll need some sort of mixer. One of the blender pedals might work better, putting the mac into the FX return.
-
If you get a limiter and set it to UBER SQUASH then level changes from your pedals won't matter. Not many people like that sound though!
-
Thanks for that. Would I just need to send the mixer signal via 1/4" jack to the interface then?
yeh as long as your interface has a couple of analogue inputs (which could be jacks or phono or RCA or whatever) then you just attach these to the outputs of your mixer. If you get a multi channel interface your mixer will need direct outs or insert points on each channel you want to record. Just to make that clear, I have an interface with 10 inputs but at home my mixer only has stereo outputs. I can record 2 mics from my mixer panned left and right and record this. However, at my studio the mixer has insert points so I can take leads from these to the inputs on my interface and record 10 channels at a time.
-
Just to say, you can use your mixer as a pre-amp for mics, so you don't need an interface with any XLR inputs or built in pre-amps.
(oh and the whole studio is run by Windows )
HAHAHAHAA yes! I'll have a listen tonight.

If you're EQing on the little mark, and IF this EQ needs to be replicated FOH, then you should DI from the amp.
