I would like my passive P to sound like my Active P
cheddatom replied to sixshooter's topic in General Discussion
I read some stuff on talkbass about some new Villex models which I think could be more transparent but couldn't see anything on their site. But certainly more open than most P-pickups. Active EMGs are true active pickups with very low inductance coils, extended range and built-in preamp to buffer and add gain. IMO they run much better on 18V. Very hard to get that sound with a passive pickup because if the passive pickup isn't detecting much 5kHz+ then all the treble boost in the world won't do anything because you can't make something out of nothing. They are unforgiving but with a good bass and good technique they are not in the least bit sterile or untoneful. Alex
So I don't have "true" active EMGs, I just have EMGs and a 18V pre-amp Oh well, it sounds very good. I can make my passive bass sound quite a lot like my bass with EMGs by using pedals. -
People like you who use your 'wit' to act upon petty, meaningless issues like this are the ones putting internet debates in a bad light.
What the hell are you talking about? This kind of post is what the internet is about. The guy cares about the issue, so he makes a great big clever post about it, what's the problem? Fair enough if you disagree with his opinion, but to insult his personality is a bit harsh!

I thought that a lot of EMG set ups were passive pups with an active pre-amp? That's what it says about my schecter. In which case, you could install them with the pre-amp in a pedal or something. -
people ARE strange!

You can kind of emulate it with the enhancer function on a boss LMB-3 but I wouldn't recommend it if you have any respect for your ears. Perhaps the aphex exciter would have a similar effect. -
I don't think reaper is much like reason at all. I don't know how you feel about software piracy OG. You may want to send me a PM.
Wot, with my knee?
I've no idea what that means

silddx - you were standing up right?
The moral of the story being......learn to re-string your own instrument.
I was 15 and scared!! Anyway, yes, that's what this particular incident taught me.
Ooh that's bad. Defo wasn't me...I couldn't sleep for the guilt. I once heard of a guy charging someone eight quid for changing the top E string on a guitar.
It bloody was bad at the time! They basically ruined my musicmaster. It's not a massive shame as I swapped it for a drumkit soon after. EDIT: Since then I have continued to use the shop as they have good stock, are nice and friendly, and generally knowledgable if you get the right guy for the right field (which you do 9 times out of 10).
I couldn't agree more, Mr Blob. Bad service = no sale. That goes for you at PC World who told me the modem I wanted to connect the missus's laptop to the internet was probably too difficult for me to use, so he recommended I pay ninety quid for them to come and do it. A mate did it for nothing. That's you at the Orange phone shop who told me she couldn't help with anything because my contract doesn't run out until September. That's me going with Vodafone, then. That's you at the Halifax who was trying to upgrade my current account and could have given me the facts in 5 minutes, but blabbed on with small talk so the appointment lasted the full half hour she was allocated. I could go on.
That's you who I asked to re-string my bass but when I came back you tried to charge me for a full set up and fret re-dress and wouldn't let me have my bass back until I went to the cash point to draw out the extra £30!! Only kidding, that was 10 years ago, so probably a different bass guy at AOS Stoke then.

I don't know, i'd feel rude without an invite to do so in his sig'.
Perhaps the answer is to wire the gtrs and basses up so they can't actually be played or even picked up without being unlocked. And keep the kettle leads for the synths etc. behind the counter.
yeh like in technology shops
Regarding the acoustic guitars, it was getting so bad that we went from a few signs around the area to a sign on each guitar. And some of them still ignored the signs. Whereas there used to be 3 or 4 kids at a time coming in, now it's not unusual to see 10 or 15. On the day I turned the power off there were about 2 pianos with 3 kids on each one at the same time, playing different 'tunes'; 3 electronic kits were being played, with not one kid asking for a pair of headphones, and if they didn't have sticks they would bash them with their hands; most of the synths were being played; someone was bashing on the handsonic-type kit. I tried to tell them but the noise was so bad they couldn't hear me, and those that could completely ignored me.
It's a difficult one. You can't really afford to alienate all the kids, but you can't afford to let them scratch the instruments. Bigger signs, or maybe a rediculously loud tannoy system - that could both amuse the kids, and get them to stop when they've gone too far.
Thanks for your understanding that I´m not a native speaker. Your comment shines a very glorious light on your interhuman abilities.
I'm not sure if you're being bitterly sarcastic, in which case your grasp of our beautiful language is excellent indeed, but your sarcasm is misplaced. I wasn't insulting you!!
I have to plead guilty when I first started out playing 12+ years ago I would go into music shops to try stuff out with absolutely no intention of buying, let alone having the available money to buy. I was far too shy to ask the 'adults' running the store to try something out. Of course my junior years meant that I failed to grasp the concept that the store were accountable for the instruments and any wear-and-tear they were subjected to on the shop floor (especially in my sweaty greasy pubescent hands).
+1 We used to go to Academy of sound in Stoke on saturdays and kill an hour playing stuff. We had no idea it was annoying or costly to the business. Kids will never see the bigger picture. You have to spell it out for them. IMO if you have signs on the guitars saying "please ask before playing" and they still play the guitars, the signs are not good enough. Get them around the strings or something. If a kid takes the sign off, then surely you could kick him out. If the sign's there, it's pretty clear you should not be playing without asking, even to a kid. I would never have done that.

You can't just miss quote me to make it look like you've helped me spell a word. That's offensive!!

It's probably his dad. I know a catholic vicor who might be interested.......?

Is then when you're going straight from bass to wah to amp? Do you have a compressor turned on on the amp? Other gain or comp pedals, or the same on your amp could exacerbate the noise.
That's not what you said though. You said that you bought what your favourite players used. I rate (for example) Chris Squire highly but I wouldn't buy a Rick, and nor would I particularly want his sound as I'm not keen on it. It also doesn't make much sense just to buy one bit of the chain. You really need the same instrument, effects, amp, cab, strings, and fingers.
yeh it seems a very weird approach. If you were to only ever use the gear of the players you admired, then you could be missing out on a whole world of sound and tone which would really suit YOU but doesn't suit those you admire.
I keep thinking I should add something to the WIKI, but life is just too short sometimes
You could just copy and paste the massive post you just made.

I've seen that before somewhere!

Put the octave pedal at the start. IMHO pitch effects should always go first, because it's the same (almost) as playing two notes at the same time.
-
could be a dodgy footswitch. Is there any way you can try another?

I have an Athalon mobile CPU running at 2.3Ghz, 3Gb RAM, 2 x M-Audio Delta1010Lt, Cubase SX3, a couple of speakers plugged into an amp. I do recording at home through a crappy phonix mixer. I record at my practice room using a rack of pre-amps, and some budget drum mics, some used condensor mics I got from here and ebay. I'm working on an album at the moment, so you'll be able to hear the sort of "quality" I can get from it.
