Sorry for cutting up your post there. I think you're missing the potential of this live. What if one song in a set requires a dub tone, one requires a grindy rock tone, one requires a jazzy tone, another a funky tone. Once you're used to being able to switch between drastically different sounds for different songs, you start wanting to switch between different sounds for different sections of songs. That's when effects pedals are useful.
In the studio you have a desk and a rack of outboard gear and an engineer to get whatever tone you want.
