I play 6 strings and I tune the E string to drop D. How silly of me! But I also love it.

Why learning to use your gear bloody works
cheddatom replied to maxrossell's topic in General Discussion
tBBC - I get why knob tweakers annoy you. I play with a lot of pedals but it takes me 1 minute to set up and I never tweak the knobs. I play with lots of pedals to get a good sound, and I always do. Whether or not the punters actually think "that's a distinctive bass sound!" or not doesn't matter. As a whole band, we sound and play better because we know exactly how to get a good sound within a couple of minutes. Sounding good is important, but being able to set up quickly and all on a stage is equally important. -
A great sounding band makes you want to stop and listen - a crap sounding band just gives you tired ears.
Exactly - whether you're a musician or a studio engineer or just a friday night punter. -
It's a shame none of the pissed punters you play to will give a sh*t though. Oh well, I'm sure it massaged your ego all the same.
They may not care about the sound consciously, but more people will be on the dance floor if the guitars aren't piercing your ear-drums with horrible tinny distortion at maximum volume. -
haha, probably just me but I really don't like line 6 tones. They just sound like a heavy metal tone (which is what I don;t want). It's that kind of over-the-top chorus flangy-thing that immediateltly goes into a searing hot heavy metal tone. I know for sure that it's that way on guitar, at least.
There's no such thing as a "Line 6 tone" that's the whole point. You shape your own tone using the Line 6 product. You may not like the options available but clearly you can turn off chorus and distortion and create 100s of tones without any chorus or distortion.
...... If I need a dub bass sound or a more classic sound for recording, it's a great tool..........it'll be useful for recording jobs, but live I'll continue with either a Status direct into the amp or my Jazz through my Sadowsky preamp. Rich.
Sorry for cutting up your post there. I think you're missing the potential of this live. What if one song in a set requires a dub tone, one requires a grindy rock tone, one requires a jazzy tone, another a funky tone. Once you're used to being able to switch between drastically different sounds for different songs, you start wanting to switch between different sounds for different sections of songs. That's when effects pedals are useful. In the studio you have a desk and a rack of outboard gear and an engineer to get whatever tone you want.
Their electronics are hit and miss in terms of performance depending on who they've ripped the design off from and how well they've copied it. Their loudspeakers are shockingly poor in every respect. Get an old Peavey or something instead, it'll sound better, last way longer and won't depreciate. Alex
I have a Behringer 2 x 10" ontop of my Peavey combo. Would you say that I would be shockingly better off with a different extension cab?
-
No I would need the exported files or just the original audio pool. It's not THAT good an offer, i'm not a pro, but I would make it sound good.
-
You could export it from Pro Tools and do it yourself, or upload it and i'll do it for free.

Fairly cheap new rig - , 8x10, 6x10 or 2x10/4x10 combination?

Another 2 x 10" to go with the one you have, and then stack them vertically! -
Check the Tu1000 too...
Nice! It's the same idea as my rack tuner on the pedal board - nice and wide display but on the floor.

The Line6 rack gear is excellent, as are all of the Pods etc. I'm not sure what this^guy's on about

"no more nails" or something equally over the top should do it. I used UHU and "lock-tite" or whatever it's called and it came up.
Did you used to be in the A Team before you turned to music?
No I confused MrT out of his transport by asking him in detail where the evidence of all of his modifications had gone. In the end he was convinced it wasn't the one he'd been messing about with all those years and I drove away with a fiendish band-mobile! -

HELP! OPINION NEEDED! Bass project poll + diary
cheddatom replied to Pkomor's topic in Build Diaries
I'm very impressed!! I agree it could do with more contouring, and for me, the whole left wing looks too wide. -
I just get bored with a standard bass sound. Playing through the same tone for an hour or longer? How monotonous!
Not at all. All sounds can be re-created to a degree, but they won't necessarily be identical or even really that close. I have heard plenty emulations, some were actually quite close. In fact, the Sansamp has a good Ampeg sound but it is still not identical. Let's face it, if any of them had absolutely nailed it, Ampeg would be out of business. In fact, if sound sampling as a "science" was absolutely nailed, we'd all be playing through a box, by which any sound could be re-created as an exact and identical copy of the original. We are not there yet. It's still a relatively young "science". All the sonic scientists in the world can offer up their theories of physics etc, but those things on the side of your head speak the truth.
If I play through an Ampeg with all of the bass and middle turned off, will it still sound like an ampeg? What if I use a Sansamp and plug it into the FX return on an Ampeg? Does it sound like a Sansamp or an Ampeg? Like I say, I agree that a certain range of tones are available from different amps, and from amp to amp this range can differ in width. However, you still think you'll be able to tell if an amp is an ampeg or not without looking, and that's rediculous, clearly, as each Ampeg has a range of tones available, and other amps cover some of this range in their range (if you know what I mean). Yes, there is an "ampeg sound", yes, they have a tonal character to them (which Ampeg you're talking about god knows, there are a few different models!!) and yes you could say "wow, that's the ampeg sound" or "they have nailed the classic Ampeg tone". However, to say that the ONLY way of getting a tone within the range available from a given Ampeg amp is to use that specific amp, it's just crazy. There are so many different amps out there with so many options and settings and such wide ranges of tones available, not to mention all of the computer modelling etc. Oh yeh, and about the Ampeg SVX VST plug-in - Have you tried it? Have you tried it with some great headphones? Have you tried it on a great computer with a great soundcard running into a poweramp running into an 8 x 10"? I went into Magic Garden studios who do a lot of pro work, and he has an Ampeh head which he's not touched since buying the SVX plug-in.
I find Ampeg recognisable. It's that simple.
But they do have a few different models that sound very different to each other. You're saying you can recognise them all as Ampeg? And can you pick out the individual models? Why not? They're very different sounding! One day you'll be outside a gig and decide that your expert ears can tell it's an ampeg inside. Then when you get inside it'll be a POD XT or a Marshall VBA or a DHA head or a Zoom B2.1U going straight into the PA. Just because a sound is distinctive doesn't mean it can't be created by anything else. You're implying that nothing can create "that Ampeg tone" other than an Ampeg. Clearly Ampeg SVX VST Plug-in sh*ts on that claim.
My point in general is that you can't just say that "That is the Ampeg Sound". There have been so many different sounds recorded over the years through Ampeg rigs, and even more live instances heard, that the Ampeg sound covers pretty much the whole spectrum of bass tones - from Jamerson's rare live outings, through about half the rock bassists from 1970 to now, to even Victor Wooten's slap antics (until very recently).
Yeh I totally agree with that. Incidentally, some people will be able to convince themselves of their ability to recognise a specific brand just because of the sheer popularity IE I bet that guitarist's using a marshall, just from hearing it. Well what do you know, you're right! Except you were always "odds on".
-
It's obvious that amps sound different and have an individual "character". Some amps are more flexible than others. I would generally regard an Ampeg as not very flexible. I think this is due to the sort of "character" built into the pre-amp. It's true that you can use the settings on your bass, on the amp, and varying your playing style to acheive similar tones from one amp to the next. What's clearly not true is that you can get any sound from any amp. Especially if you're relying on the pre-amp. Alex - What if nick oliveri asked you to get his distorted valve-driven sound out of my peavey combo? I personally treat my pedalboard as one big very flexible pre-amp, and whatever amp i'm using as a PA. This way I can extremely close to the exact same tone out of a wide variety of rigs.
