Some DI boxes have a jack output. A DI doesn't just convert a jack plug to an XLR, it's to raise your instrument level signal to a line level signal, so it won't be pointless at all.

I think both are equally important. Some of us seem to want to be heard as an individual, where as some of us want to contribute to the sound of the band as a whole. I think the latter is more important, but it's very hard to be so selfless, and i've never really acheived that.

I have a very high output from my board, but I prefer the sound of going into the passive input on my peavey. Leave it up to your ears!

I think noise can be subjective. Also, if you're running fairly heavy compression after any slightly noisy effect, the noise will be worse, and worse still if you have a dirt box after it. The ZNR is quite good, but I also used a NS2 as I used so many other pedals with my old zoom the noise was horrendous. The B2.1U is nowhere near as bad.

The zoom is noisy. I would set the ZNR (zoom noise reduction) to max on every patch, and put it in a true bypass loop for when you're not using it.

My comments on wah vs dirt were probably a little stupid. I used to gig with 3 wahs, plus some wahs on my B2.1U, and 4 or 5 distortions, plus some on my B2.1U. It sounds like total overkill but at the time seemed perfectly logical.

Too much wah, not enough dirt!!! I don't really know what the blowtorch is like else i'd recommend a complimentary OD. I love the momentaty loop idea, i've thought of doing this before but never got round to it.

Rich, have you heard Anti-Pop? I think it's generally more commercial/easy to listen to. I love my Primus live DVD, I wish I had seen them live.

If you have everything going through the desk, you can just record the line-out. If not, you'd have to use a stereo pair of mics, which will not necessarily give a great result, but may be good enough for what you're looking for. Which method will you go for? And what do you want to do with it after? IE just a bit of comp and EQ, or a full edit and mix? Then we'd have a better idea of what to recommend. Also, I think you're looking for a quick, easy, effective, cheap recording solution, rather than an "epic" one, which would probably prove rather inconvinient.

yeh just get something amusing that lights up and looks cool. When you've got all your gear plugged in we'll need a night shot.

I've bought my other cable now. I've tried eveyr way of connecting the SPDIF ports on both PCs and I still can't get the VST Link page to recognise anything. I tried the Self Test, by plugging SPDIF 0 into SPDIF 1 on one PC. I set the ports to SPDIF out L and SPDIF in L. Arrrrgh!!?!? What am I doing wrong!? Vstack looks interesting, but looks like it's for MIDI/VSTis rather than the audio processing I want to acheive.

I play fairly heavy alternative rock music. I would die if I could only gig with 4 pedals!!! Having said that.... Barge Concepts blender/feedback loop thingy Zvex Wah Probe (or one of my other wahs, but this is my favorite) EQ Pedal Ibanez SS10 or whatever my weird distortion/chorus box is called. I need to be able to have two different levels of overdrive, so the EQ would give me that. A gig without digital delay would be frustrating though.

A DI is a Direct Injection box used to bring instrument level signal up to line level. This is used to supplying a signal to mixing desks at gigs, and can be used for the same reason when recording. Some bass amps have DI outputs built into them. Some pedals are called "bass DI"s but often incorporate other functions, such as EQ and distortion. The Boss LMB3 is a Limiter, which is a type of compressor. You can find out all about compressors in the Wiki.

I (when I was gigging) use 20-25 pedals per gig. I used them to create lots of different sounds. Each of our songs would have up to 50 pedal "stomps" in it. It helps create dynamics in the sound with relation to the arrangement of the song. It helps keep things interesting and fresh. It means that as a band, we sound as good (if not better) live as we do in the studio.

You'll have to take the guitars down when recording. It's looking really good though. I wish I could do this to my studio. I have no security on the building so can't really spend money doing it up.

Hamster - Fair enough, it's all about what it sounds like to your own ears, obviously. It's just that this pitch FX tracking issue comes up all the time, and it's treated as fact that pitch FX should come before any distortion. I've personally had goodd results both ways round. I'm not looking for any answers on the subject for myself, just interested in why someone would think an octave pedal should go first in the chain if before the amp, but after distortion if in the amp's loop.

I find it weird that two people have suggested putting pitch/octave effects in the loop with distortion before the input. This compared to the effect order threads where people say "always put your pitch fx first".
