Damn, can't find that sound - Rob Trujillo's solo
cheddatom replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
Everyone I know refers to this man as "the monkey", because of his facial expressions. I don't know many people though :-( -
I haven't read every single post, so, sorry if I say something stupid! I've read quite a few comments saying "you can't use an ERB in a band context" "people only use them for tapping/showing off" "you don't see an ERB at your local open mic night" etc. Well, I play a 6 string, (I don't know if that's counted as an ERB or not) and I take it to open mic nights with my guitarist. I like to play a lot of chords, which often involve the high C, and I like to play a lot of low groovey bass lines, which often involve the low B. The band i'm in is a 3 peice, and I use lots of effects, a bi-amp rig, and my extended range, to help fill out the sound. I didn't get a 6 string so that i'd have to use my left hand less either. Quite often i'm on the High C at the 24th fret. I still think i'm a bassist though. If anyone's interested, there's a new song (fake smiles in the photograph)on my band's myspace (myspace.com/nologorock) where i'm playing 5 string bar chords in the chorus (not impressive, but effective use of ERB).
Wolstenholme used to use a Boss ODB-3 quite extensively actually. Check "Hyper Music" for a demonstration of this. I quite like the pedal, but theres so many haters!!
Where did you get that info? I'm not into them much these days, but i'm always on the muse gear msg board and no-one has ever said that.

I'd love to be able to change tunings by pressing a button. Tuning up is not so much of an issue, but I am lazy so.... I think this has been around for a while. Can you have it fitted to a 6 string? I wonder how much that would cost?!?
-
Have you heard his live sound? I would have thought it was something that everyone would hate, regardless of their preference. It sounds like one of those 14 year old kids doing his first gig with a little practice amp turned up to the max, hitting his bass as hard as he can with a pick, but missing the strings half the time.
-
I don't think you can generalise about all Ibanez pedals like that. Any distortion pedal has the potential to feedback. 99.9% of distortion pedals have the potential to sound good!
-
You could take the head out of the cube, and put it ontop of a nice loud combo.
-
I don't blame his amps. I blame him! I've seen bands playing with ashdown bass rigs that sound great! I've never seen system live with a good bass tone though.
-
I have read that some dirt boxes don't mix well with actives. When I made the switch from passive to active, it didn't seem to make any difference, other than the tone of the bass, obviously. If you're getting a new bass and it will be your main bass, then I would probably wait. Your local SC should also have the Zoom B2.1U which has some good distortions and a lot of extra options too, for not much money.

I don't know of any shops with a good selection of bass pedals. I guess that's why I have a lot of guitar pedals! Most shops should have boss ODB-3 and MT-2 (and ML-2!!!) for you to try. The sound control in stoke has tech21 stuff in at the moment, so maybe try your local SC?

If you look up some youtube videos, you should be able to observe how awfully crap his tone is. I think it's mainly down to the fact that he has crap technique, and needs some extreme limiting like they must use in the studio. This is off topic though, sorry!

I like to see negative comments. The title implies this is a thread about opinions, not objectivity. I'm a bit of a hippy :-/

He has such a crap tone live anyway, always has!

I think most people would agree with you there. I don't know which posts cantdosleepy was reading and thought they were bitchy or disrespectful?
-
I didn't think anyone was being disrespectful or "bitching" about any bassists they used to like. People are just pointing out who they used to like, and why they don't now. Gary Cherone does kind of ruin extreme, but, I listen to him with a smile, not really taking him seriously. If you get the live version of cupid's dead from Wembley, you get an extended funky guitar+bass solo without the crap rap! Nuno's doing more pop kinda stuff now isn't he? Less funky. I love his 1st solo album, and some mourning widows too. I'm writing this here as I assume we would not be allowed a guitarist's appreciation thread on a bass forum!

I would have thought that most singers would have noticed if they didn't have a monitor. Most amusing story!

I use a bi-amp rig, so I guess it's more common for people like me, but, i've always got the soundman to DI and take all the high end off, and mic my 2 x 12" amp for the top end.
-
Sorry! I obviously misunderstood your post. I don't know many people that have heard of nuno, so it's cool to see someone else! I love "Waiting for the punchline", which is on the whole very groovey and sounds amazing.

Do I have GAS, or do I yearn for a tone I can hear in my head, but not from my amp(for now)? Personally, I have the latter, and won't be purchasing anything for a long time :-) Quite often I get asked by the other band mates to change something in a mix, or a master, or on a photo. I just mess with a control a bit, sometimes I even bother to change it to how they want it! then I just change it back, or stop fiddling with the control, and ask if they're happy. I've not been caught yet!
33. Nuno Bettencourt - Extreme, Mourning Widows
You're tired of Nuno? Maybe get your ears syringed! I am tired of muse. I still love their old stuff, but, now they're getting old, and, crap.

I can't disconnect it yet, as I can't get it out to get at the wires. Eitherway, I don't think two wires would prevent me from budging the thing at all! I thought at first that it was probably just really heavy, and I was being a bit of a weakling. However, I do normally lift the whole cab on my own, and I got our drummer to try who is the muscley type, and he couldn't do it either. I didn't get chance to look at it last night, but we have a practice tonight, so no doubt i'll be trying to prise it with a screwdriver. I really don't want to damage it though!

I love the placebo effect, and think about it quite a bit, and try to use it on myself. My boss has been taking this herbal remedy for a month, to stop her migraines. Before, she "needed" some extra strong one a day pills to stop the migraines, now she just takes a placebo. I told her that it's a placebo, but not to think about it too much. She wasn't interested anyway, just said "well, it works for me!". I have a really nice cheapo bass which was my first 6 string. I always thought I would invest in a really nice, more expensive bass when I could afford. When I could afford, I bought a very nice schecter, but, it doesn't play any better! For the first month I had it, I was raving on about how much better it was to play and how it was worth the money (it was though) etc, but, that was just the effect of having spent a lot of money on it. Once that effect wore off, I realised it just sounded a bit better, and looked nicer. Maybe a bit of the same effect with your basses?
