1.
IMO i-m-r-i-m-r... is very good for triplets but accents too much to keep a balanced 4 notes.. so im learning the method predominantly used by steve di giorgio which is i-m-r-m-i-m-r-m-i and so on...

For my triplets I use r-m-i as i-m-r just feels unnatural. I have been practicing going r-m-i-m-r-m-i etc for fast passages, and I can do it quite smoothly now. It was so difficult to get my fingers working that way at first!

  2. Sorry, the plug-in is a VST plug in for use with DAWs on the computer. I can't remember the name of the programmers.

I would love to try the JCM800, and I don't think you're nuts at all. I am interested to know, what made you say it was bass specific in your first post?

If you have an overdrive pedal, try that. Just set it to boost, rather than distort, and it should make the marshall dirty!

  3. Yeh, you want to try turning up the input, not the output, surely? I didn't know they did a JCM 800 for bass? Weird. I do use a JCM 800 modelling plug-in in the studio on bass quite a lot, and I have no problem getting it to distort, but, that's a plug-in. Sorry, that's not helpful!

  4.
Agreed. I didn't mean to be patronising about money. I just think life's too short to think of it as the only thing. The guy's main gripe is that, although he's got a lovely '74 bass, it cost him more money than it should. Hey, looking at Fender prices at the moment that's gonna be true for a lot of us soon!
Good to talk these things over isn't it!
    Cheers
    Chris
Not patronising at all!

Maybe your bank manager would appreciate it if you sold your gold limousine and started carrying your own basses?

    :)

  5. I didn't realise you had to sell gear for that! That's harsh. I'm sure you're right about the legal situation, and like I say, I don't really know about it. All I read is "If you can afford to spend £1000 on a bass, you can afford to loose it", which I don't think is true, or, it's not true for me (and I like to argue!). To be fair I did have a couple of guitars nicked from my house and I wasn't really bothered or upset, or worrying about the money. If they were selling them nicked on Ebay though, i'd probably try to do something. I got my fender acoustic 4 string back, which is cool.

  6. There are deffinitely more important things in life, that's a very good point. However, if I personally got ripped off for £1000 i'd be using a lot of my free time to get it back, as I can't afford to loose it. There's no need to get upset about it, but maybe he's not getting upset?

I don't really know much about the case, but I read about your generosity with that broken flea bass, and I was quite shocked to be honest. It's very obvious that you have a LOT more money than me. I'm a generous and laid back person, I hate money, and I never worry about it, but I don't have enough of it to have the same attitude as you, and obviously, this guy on ebay is in the same position.

  7. Yeh, well, I never want to be a technically skilled a Victor.

The drummer in my band is really into all of these solo drummers on drummerworld.com and youtube etc, which are similar to all the amazing bassists around. They play technically brilliant stuff, and it either gives me a headache or fades into the background. 10 minutes of drum soloing should contain more than 10 seconds of groove! Same goes for bassists, occasionally I want to hear a funky solo, but only in the middle of a funky bassline.

  8.
i should also say in his defence that on the very day after his mum died he turned up for rehearsal as usual!
That's not necessarily a defence. I wouldn't turn up for a practice if my mum died. I might go for a drink with my band, but, y'know, if you said that to Trisha, she'd be telling you about how he's a classic case of whatever and needs therapy.

Little Johnny: Mummy, when I grow up I want to be a drummer!
Mummy: Now Johnny, you can't do both.

  9. An amateur drummer died and went to heaven. He was waiting outside the pearly gates when he heard the most incredible fast and furious drumming coming from within. Immediately he recognized the playing and rushed to ask St. Peter if that was Buddy Rich playing drums inside the gates. St. Peter responded: "No, that's God. He just thinks he's Buddy Rich."

  10. He's not necessarily un-committed, just a bit messed up in the head. It sounds like he has quite a bad OCD about his mistakes, and obviously as you say he's depressed. I may sound like a "big gay boy" but I think some of these posts are really insensitive, and Happy jack is just funny.

  11. I think the level of technical ability you reach can always increase, although the better you get, the harder it is to improve. What is Victor going to do next? Nothing different, but maybe a bit faster.

You have to decide why you're playing the bass, and then keep challenging yourself in those key areas. So it may be that you want to just rock out in a covers band playing root notes with your pick, or you may want to be a great bassline writer for original stuff in a band. You may want to compose you own music, or songs, or you may want to become a bass virtuoso.

I never want to be as good as Victor. I can see the appeal in it, but i'm more interested in writing songs with my bands mates, and in shaping the sound and feel of these songs. I hardly ever play the bass outside of our band practices, and I think that is the reason I don't really progress technically.

  12. I think multi-effects are great, but, it's not as though they're making a B9.2U yet :-/

aphook's point is very important. I use a B2.1U, but in congunction with other pedals for different sounds. If you can do everything you want with a simple multi though, it's obviously a lot easier at gigs. I wish I could just tap 1 footswitch every time I want to change my sound, as opposed to 3 or 4 etc.

  13. For some reason, I got it into my head that I could play faster, smoother rythms, if I could get my three fingers going 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2 etc. I'm pretty much there now, but it was a very unnatural thing to try and do. I don't know if anyone else plays like this? This is for very fast (imho) stuff that I want finger (as opposed to pick) tone for.

  14.
I was in a band called "Dr White & the heavy Bleeders"
That's a very cool name!!

I'm playing drums in a band, just for fun, and we're called the Premature Ejaculators. We thought we'd be the only ones, but there are another 2 bands out there with the same name! Grrr.

  15. I've seen some great deals in my local cash converters. I would be sure that what you're buying works first though. I bought a PSU off their Ebay shop 2 weeks ago and it was broken. They gave me a full refund though, so...

I spent a lot of time in these types of shops about a year ago looking for my stolen guitar :-(
