Good at playing, rubbish at selling ourselves
Here's a link to the website. Constructive criticism welcome. https://www.fireflyrock.com/
The website is good, it's got all the right content. The gigs page with one gig might be counter productive. I don't think the image of the band works. I realise a lot of covers bands just wear random t-shirts and jeans/shorts but if you're struggling to get gigs, sharpening up the image would probably help. I watched the video for "are you gonna go my way" because it's the only one of the 3 I can stand (sorry). At the very start, the singer introduces the song, but doesn't seem very confident. After it's kicked in, everything seems good, but the sound quality is not great. It sounds like one side of a stereo mic was pushed against a cushion or something? So I would sharpen up the image, get an unpaid gig somewhere (anywhere), get a mate with a go pro to film it, and give the front man some coke. -
...this could have been saved had they just sent a new one originally.
It was probably an easy mistake to make, but like you said in the OP, all they had to do was apologise and sort it out promptly and it would have been fine
I like their use of dissonance here, adding contrast to the beautiful harmonies of the non dissonant first chorus. Almost recreating the pharmacological bliss the first time, then the sickening withdrawal in the first verse immediately afterwards, and trying to chase the bliss again in the second chorus but instead just spiralling out of control. Like musical onomatopoeia (something which I think Pink Floyd do really well themselves).
You should write reviews!

Promoting a gig night. Anyone done it?
cheddatom replied to radiophonic's topic in General Discussion
I play the Black Market Venue in Warsop (not far from Nottingham but pretty small) fairly regularly, and for the right bands, people really do travel. I think the fact that it has a car park and seems to let people stay over night in their campers there helps the numbers. -
If you have a full band in a room and you're trying to record it with one or two mics, you might get a good overall sound after lots of experimentation, but I doubt you'll ever get an accurate idea of what your bass sounds like. You really need a multi-track setup so you can take a DI or have your cab close-mic'd If it sounds good when you're stood next to your amp, i'd trust that. Whether or not your sweet gritty tone will ever make it to FOH at a gig seems to be pot luck (unless you take your own soundman)
-
is it just a mic in a room though? 'cos where the mic is will make a hell of a difference
-
how did you record it?

Joe Dart was mentioned on page one and this thread kept going?!?

too many bands put up with average players, and I think bassist is the usual place for it. I was at a gig last night, one band who are doing pretty well at the moment (headline tours etc) are sh*t hot, the singer, guitarist and drummer are all tight as hell and really playing. The bassist couldn't nod his head in time with the weird time signatures. Luckily he had a massively scooped sound and generally played in time, so he wasn't exactly taking away from the performance, but he didn't seem to be adding anything. I guess they'll put up with him forever, but if I was in their locality I'd have told them how sh*t he was and offered my services with no shame.

I forgot to moan about the one from a week ago. Saturday night in Belper. This venue has it's own PA, but it's knackered and rubbish, and there's never a soundman. People have told me there's a soundman but I've never seen him. They ask us to get there for 7, we arrive on time, and there are just some old blokes standing around chatting, taking bits of the PA apart. I f*** off to the bar. When I come back later the first band are on (not bad, pretty good bassist actually, but I think the drummer tuned my toms higher while I was gone which was annoying) and it's way too loud. There's clearly no-one running the sound, I guess they set it up themselves. The 2nd act begged me to do his sound so I did the best I could but his guitar was distorting no matter what I did with the levels. All of this I expected, so it was fine, we played a good set, went down well, and I was pleased (and a bit pissed) at the end of the night. Our bassist was not pleased but I don't understand why, we've played this place 3 times now and it's always the same Anyway, this weekend, Warsop on Friday, it was OK but we seemed to make a hell of a lot of mistakes. Our frontman was a bit ill so maybe that put him off which put the rest of us off? It could have been the fact that the sound went to sh*t and then the soundman wandered off? Anyway, we did not play well, but as usual no-one noticed Saturday night in Hereford, great venue, good sound (if too loud as usual), and I love the headline band "Steve Ignorant's Slice Of Life" - they're just ace

I love the pickguard shape! It's ace! -
January was quiet for the folk/punk band, but my reggae and metal bands got a run out. The rest of the year is mental for the folk/punk. I think I have about 4 weekends off for the rest of the year, and there are a load of mid-week gigs and weekends with 2 or 3 gigs

new strings, cut the bass, play hard or lower the action, if you're not getting "clank" from that when DI'd I'd be surprised. Some compression or dirt on the high mids and highs should help too
-
never heard of Joe Tex, nice one!
-
yeh he's ace, great drumming too

I don't like that you have to blend the two pre-amps externally, why wouldn't they give a mixed output? There are level controls for each channel so it'd be easy enough
There are three of them playing. That link is great. Thankyou.
At the very start, there's an instrument on one side (wah style keys?), then drums and bass kick in, and a wah guitar kicks in on the other side. It's probably more noticeable for me as I listen on headphones. -
pretty cool! I feel like the drums could be a bit looser, and should maybe go to a ride for the run out, and the rhythm on the main keys part could be a bit more interesting. It's definitely in the style of Vulfpeck! Nice one
Shame about that widdling bass player.... everyone else is ON it and he is sorta along for the ride/showing his ass somewhat messily. But what do I know? Apparently it is her: http://www.meshell.com/
I can't tell if you're joking? The way the bass is playing all over the beat is what I love about that track, I think it's incredible! I'd describe it as "greasy" which fits with the title of the song. To me that's way funkier than all the straight "on the one" James Brown stuff

1.2 seconds to delete an email? You need to speed up! I think it's fair enough to ask the question about opting in/out of different kinds of emails. I don't think anyone was that negative? What if a load of people paid full price for a ticket, got to the show, said hi to the guys at basschat and they said "Hi, did you get your 20% off? We posted about it in the site news section"... I'm pretty sure there'd be more people annoyed by that than those annoyed by the email

All the pedals, not necessarily in the right order
cheddatom replied to Cat Burrito's topic in Effects
try it both ways, there are no rules, but yeh, keep the tuner at the start The only time I'd put a tuner at the end of a chain is if I was using it to mute noise produced by other pedals
