so is "The One" referring to the position of the note in the bar, or is it referring to the root note at the start of the repeating bassline?

Sorry, when I said "running out of power" I meant running out of RAM or CPU capability If it was a PC I'd be going on about drivers etc but AFAIK the audio drivers on macs are rock solid

In that example the root note at the start of each repetition (kick, bass and keys) is always on an off beat, and never on the first beat of a bar... unless I completely misunderstand rhythm? EDIT: Yes indeed JapanAxe

get it in the right place and mono should be fine I wonder whether it's just the laptop running out of power? On Cubase there's a meter that shows CPU and Disc usage. Is there anything like this on Audacity?

Have you tried it with a bigger buffer? Can you hear these artefacts when you monitor from the interface?

People go on about "on the one" because James Brown used to say it. Fair enough! But it occurs to me that a lot of funky music generally has "the one" on the off beat just before the first beat of the next bar. Is this still called "the one"? How can it be the one if it's not on the one? And how can you play on the one if the big beat is on the off beat before it? I'm so confused

I bet it's the PSU. I have the same at home with one of my interfaces. I just unplug the PSU and let the laptop run off battery. I did have to tweak the power plan to stop it turning off mid take though!

Do they contain glitches? It's a Mac so I don't think the drivers would be out... I can't find a Presonus "Audiophile" online. Is it an "Audiobox"? I just wanted to check if it's powered via USB or an external PSU

I have had good sound there once, promise! Our bassist uses his own rig and I (on drums) tend to keep it down, but the grumpy bastard soundguy wasn't there on the subject of the grumpy bastard, I was watching the headline band after we'd played our set, and you couldn't hear the bass at all. It was a 1 string stick bass to be fair, but I've seen live videos of this band and he does get a good sound. Anyway, you couldn't hear him and it was killing the whole thing, so my guitarist said to the grumpy bastard "Excuse me, is there any chance you could turn the bass up?" and the grumpy bastard actually said "f*** off" ...very amusing as the guitarist is a lovely bloke and I doubt he's ever been told to F OFF before!

[/quote] I think it's an ace venue!! But it is pot-luck with the sound guys. One of them is very moody and got pretty abusive when we asked him to change things - on 2 separate gigs!

try running off battery, but also try increasing your buffer size. Are the noises there when you export your mixes?

there's no octave there surely? But a LPF on top of an envelope follower is probably right. Whether or not the LPF frequency is being modulated... could be a good call there, it would explain some of the funkier noises

weird. If it's buzzing on certain notes that would normally be something physically rattling, but this is a separate head... do you always put the head on top of the cab? Can you try it as far away from the cab as possible?

I wouldn't have thought either of those pedals would do it (I have both). The envelope follower/LPF built into my Digitech XP-100 would do that extra resonant filter thing, then I'd put some dirt on top, but that's not a lot of help... anyway, yeh, some sort of envelope follower with dirt and some compression and an LPF in the studio EDIT: I can't hear modulation or flange or anything like that, just sounds like an envelope follower to me - what am I missing?

sounds like his bandmate has told him he needs a compressor. Maybe he doesn't have enough dynamic control and the bandmate thinks this will solve the problem? If so they're mistaken IMO Still, I really like to use a limiter, always on, just before my amp in the chain, to squash any extra big spikes. I also use another compressor earlier in the chain to give extra punch, but that wouldn't be always on, just for the odd section

you can get pickup blend pots on passive instruments, no need for it to be active you can plug any basses into either input on your amp, and two at the same time would be fine. Your passive bass into the active input might be a bit too quiet With an active instrument, you generally get some sort of EQ which is much more powerful than a passive tone pot. They are normally louder than a passive instrument too

I learned that I can actually play pretty well, and faster than I thought, just because I put myself into a new scenario
