Prince -Jazz Funk Sessions- 1977, Loring park Studio's.
cheddatom replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
There are definitely more than 3 players at once. I wonder if it's overdubs or if there were more in the band? Great stuff anyway, thanks! EDIT: I got to here from the comments on youtube, funky! I'm sure you can deal with the power socket at the side, just use a low profile extension or something? Or move the socket to the back? There must be room as it has a battery compartment

Honestly I thought I'd be able to find at least one James Brown song that isn't on the one but I can't!
A lot of what make funk 'funky' is playing slightly off the beat. David Garibaldi (drummer with Tower of Power) has an excellent clip on Youtube where he demonstrates moving the snare beat around in any given bar and where the bass drum beat can also be shifted around. It's worth a look.
I guess you mean this one? Interesting http://www.youtube....h?v=jFwFLqn-k7A

Is there a reason for the apparent dislike for active basses...
cheddatom replied to Rocker's topic in Bass Guitars
I like to change my sound lots. I use a lot of effects pedals for that. I've managed to ditch 3 different EQ pedals (top boost, mid boost, bottom boost) by learning to use the pre-amp on my bass instead it'd be nice not to worry about batteries though -
The 'one' is surely the first quarter interval in a 4 beat bar (or other variations). Notes can be played on the beat or before or after, but the 'one' is always in the same place. Alternatively, I could be too thick to understand this thread.
It's a difficult one to explain. What you're saying is that "the one" is definitely on the first beat of the bar, and according to the discussion above, that is what James Brown meant when he coined the phrase I have personally been listening to and playing a lot of what I would describe as funky music, and a lot of the basslines and riffs I gravitate towards start on the offbeat before the first beat of the bar. As there are so many, I started to wonder whether what James Brown meant by "the one" was not in fact the first beat of the bar, but instead the first note of the bassline. Apparently not!
-
99% of my funky ideas don't feature "the one" and when I realised this after watching JB and Bootsy talk about it, I started to question whether my ideas were actually funky at all. I guess the whole idea of "the one" is pretty specific to those people and there's no need to take it so seriously
-
Sorry to drag this back up, I've been gigging all weekend ...so to conclude, if you subscribe to the theory that to be funky, everyone in the band needs to be "on the one", this means that all of your funk riffs must have a note on the first beat of the bar. The examples above are not funky in terms of JB's or Bootsy's definitions. Surely if these greats would not describe the above as funky, then they can't be? In which case, what is this kind of music which sounds like funk but isn't on the one?
-
so is "The One" referring to the position of the note in the bar, or is it referring to the root note at the start of the repeating bassline?

Electrical (digital hash?) noise on recordings
cheddatom replied to radiophonic's topic in Recording
Sorry, when I said "running out of power" I meant running out of RAM or CPU capability If it was a PC I'd be going on about drivers etc but AFAIK the audio drivers on macs are rock solid -
In that example the root note at the start of each repetition (kick, bass and keys) is always on an off beat, and never on the first beat of a bar... unless I completely misunderstand rhythm? EDIT: Yes indeed JapanAxe

get it in the right place and mono should be fine I wonder whether it's just the laptop running out of power? On Cubase there's a meter that shows CPU and Disc usage. Is there anything like this on Audacity? -
this is more of a classic example (the first track off this album) Surely that's funky as funk even though the one is not on the one?
-
This track is a good example but maybe it's not "funk"?

Have you tried it with a bigger buffer? Can you hear these artefacts when you monitor from the interface? -
People go on about "on the one" because James Brown used to say it. Fair enough! But it occurs to me that a lot of funky music generally has "the one" on the off beat just before the first beat of the next bar. Is this still called "the one"? How can it be the one if it's not on the one? And how can you play on the one if the big beat is on the off beat before it? I'm so confused

Electrical (digital hash?) noise on recordings
cheddatom replied to radiophonic's topic in Recording
I bet it's the PSU. I have the same at home with one of my interfaces. I just unplug the PSU and let the laptop run off battery. I did have to tweak the power plan to stop it turning off mid take though! -

...even when you play them on other devices? Sorry, probably seems like a stupid question but it's worth asking I'm not familiar with Audacity but I guess you can access the original audio files? Do they contain glitches? It's a Mac so I don't think the drivers would be out... I can't find a Presonus "Audiophile" online. Is it an "Audiobox"? I just wanted to check if it's powered via USB or an external PSU -
I have had good sound there once, promise! Our bassist uses his own rig and I (on drums) tend to keep it down, but the grumpy bastard soundguy wasn't there on the subject of the grumpy bastard, I was watching the headline band after we'd played our set, and you couldn't hear the bass at all. It was a 1 string stick bass to be fair, but I've seen live videos of this band and he does get a good sound. Anyway, you couldn't hear him and it was killing the whole thing, so my guitarist said to the grumpy bastard "Excuse me, is there any chance you could turn the bass up?" and the grumpy bastard actually said "f*** off" ...very amusing as the guitarist is a lovely bloke and I doubt he's ever been told to F OFF before!
..apart from the live sound both on and off stage! Our singer was very unhappy with the monitoring - the perils of playing with someone who has had formal training and expects to hit every note, every time. We're playing there again next month, but headlining this time so I hope we have a bit more control. The concept is great though, right down to having a separate bar away from the bands.
I think it's an ace venue!! But it is pot-luck with the sound guys. One of them is very moody and got pretty abusive when we asked him to change things - on 2 separate gigs!

try running off battery, but also try increasing your buffer size. Are the noises there when you export your mixes? -
Just been offered a gig in the states!

If I know gigs, and I think I do, then this will be the best gig, the biggest gig, really, this gig is going to be so good you won't believe it -
‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ - bass sound (how?)
cheddatom replied to Skol303's topic in General Discussion
there's no octave there surely? But a LPF on top of an envelope follower is probably right. Whether or not the LPF frequency is being modulated... could be a good call there, it would explain some of the funkier noises
