1. never heard of Joe Tex, nice one!
2. yeh he's ace, great drumming too
3. I don't like that you have to blend the two pre-amps externally, why wouldn't they give a mixed output? There are level controls for each channel so it'd be easy enough
4.
There are three of them playing. That link is great. Thankyou.
At the very start, there's an instrument on one side (wah style keys?), then drums and bass kick in, and a wah guitar kicks in on the other side. It's probably more noticeable for me as I listen on headphones.
5. pretty cool! I feel like the drums could be a bit looser, and should maybe go to a ride for the run out, and the rhythm on the main keys part could be a bit more interesting. It's definitely in the style of Vulfpeck! Nice one
6. nice one, well impressed by the scratchplate!
7.
Shame about that widdling bass player.... everyone else is ON it and he is sorta along for the ride/showing his ass somewhat messily. But what do I know? Apparently it is her: http://www.meshell.com/
I can't tell if you're joking? The way the bass is playing all over the beat is what I love about that track, I think it's incredible! I'd describe it as "greasy" which fits with the title of the song. To me that's way funkier than all the straight "on the one" James Brown stuff
8. 1.2 seconds to delete an email? You need to speed up! I think it's fair enough to ask the question about opting in/out of different kinds of emails. I don't think anyone was that negative? What if a load of people paid full price for a ticket, got to the show, said hi to the guys at basschat and they said "Hi, did you get your 20% off? We posted about it in the site news section"... I'm pretty sure there'd be more people annoyed by that than those annoyed by the email
9. try it both ways, there are no rules, but yeh, keep the tuner at the start The only time I'd put a tuner at the end of a chain is if I was using it to mute noise produced by other pedals
10. ooops! Sorry, yes, don't buy that!! They do do one though http://www.godlyke.com/power-all/power-all-cables/power-all-cable-black-right-angle-extension-jumper I'm sure there are some on ebay for £1 if you have a search
11. I can do your recordings at Riff Factory in Stoke, PM if you want any info
12. There are definitely more than 3 players at once. I wonder if it's overdubs or if there were more in the band? Great stuff anyway, thanks! EDIT: I got to here from the comments on youtube, funky! https://www.mixcloud.com/audiolounge/prince-funk-from-the-vault-1976-1983/
13. this should do the trick http://www.godlyke.com/power-all/power-all-cables/cable-male-1-7mm-right-angle-barrel-adaptor
14. I'm sure you can deal with the power socket at the side, just use a low profile extension or something? Or move the socket to the back? There must be room as it has a battery compartment
15. Honestly I thought I'd be able to find at least one James Brown song that isn't on the one but I can't!
A lot of what make funk 'funky' is playing slightly off the beat. David Garibaldi (drummer with Tower of Power) has an excellent clip on Youtube where he demonstrates moving the snare beat around in any given bar and where the bass drum beat can also be shifted around. It's worth a look.
I guess you mean this one? Interesting http://www.youtube....h?v=jFwFLqn-k7A
16. I like to change my sound lots. I use a lot of effects pedals for that. I've managed to ditch 3 different EQ pedals (top boost, mid boost, bottom boost) by learning to use the pre-amp on my bass instead it'd be nice not to worry about batteries though
17.
The 'one' is surely the first quarter interval in a 4 beat bar (or other variations). Notes can be played on the beat or before or after, but the 'one' is always in the same place. Alternatively, I could be too thick to understand this thread.
It's a difficult one to explain. What you're saying is that "the one" is definitely on the first beat of the bar, and according to the discussion above, that is what James Brown meant when he coined the phrase I have personally been listening to and playing a lot of what I would describe as funky music, and a lot of the basslines and riffs I gravitate towards start on the offbeat before the first beat of the bar. As there are so many, I started to wonder whether what James Brown meant by "the one" was not in fact the first beat of the bar, but instead the first note of the bassline. Apparently not!
18. 99% of my funky ideas don't feature "the one" and when I realised this after watching JB and Bootsy talk about it, I started to question whether my ideas were actually funky at all. I guess the whole idea of "the one" is pretty specific to those people and there's no need to take it so seriously
19. Sorry to drag this back up, I've been gigging all weekend ...so to conclude, if you subscribe to the theory that to be funky, everyone in the band needs to be "on the one", this means that all of your funk riffs must have a note on the first beat of the bar. The examples above are not funky in terms of JB's or Bootsy's definitions. Surely if these greats would not describe the above as funky, then they can't be? In which case, what is this kind of music which sounds like funk but isn't on the one?
20. so is "The One" referring to the position of the note in the bar, or is it referring to the root note at the start of the repeating bassline?
21. Sorry, when I said "running out of power" I meant running out of RAM or CPU capability If it was a PC I'd be going on about drivers etc but AFAIK the audio drivers on macs are rock solid
22. In that example the root note at the start of each repetition (kick, bass and keys) is always on an off beat, and never on the first beat of a bar... unless I completely misunderstand rhythm? EDIT: Yes indeed JapanAxe
23. get it in the right place and mono should be fine I wonder whether it's just the laptop running out of power? On Cubase there's a meter that shows CPU and Disc usage. Is there anything like this on Audacity?
24. this is more of a classic example (the first track off this album) Surely that's funky as funk even though the one is not on the one?
