1. very cool, great demo, thanks!
2. I actually only put my pedals on the board the day before a gig. I change them around very often, especially fuzzes
3. If you're not moving around while you're playing then the bassline is probably wrong
4. You can use a compressor in many different ways to shape the dynamic envelope of the notes you play (which reach the threshold). There are so many different ways to use a compressor, I find it crazy that people think they can summarise this whole world of possibilities with statements like "it kills dynamics" - well obviously, if that's how you've set it!!
5. A very weird venue in Nottingham - SUMAC Centre. It was like a huge living room. The crowd seemed to love the loud punk bands so I was a bit anxious about us going on with out "folk punk" (I don't hear any punk in our music TBH) but they seemed to love us too! Very, very warm and sweaty. Good fun!
6. cool! We're Headsticks. I'm on drums but we have a fantastic bass player Nick Bayes
7. I take the one that does the job properly, regardless of the cost. To some extent it's also regardless of looks, but I wouldn't own a bass I didn't consider to be good looking
8.
We encountered a new one (to us) last week - a compresser limiter: crappy down-pointing speakers over the dancefloor, and a PA set to squish and compress into mush anything over 90db. We made sure the B&G were aware of the limitations before we started, so they weren't upset with us, but it was a tiptoeing nightmare. Why some venues advertise as a live venue is beyond me...well, the money, obviously, but no-one enjoys it...
Surely a limiter on the whole mix is preferable to a cut-out system? I'd have thought this would work pretty well. I guess the threshold was just set too low?
9. yeh a phone wouldn't be the best. I wonder if there's a BCer near you with a recording setup?
10. I'm playing for the first time on the Sunday. I'll not be attending the rest of the festival, way too busy in the studio What's your band called Lozz?
11. I've not had loads of experience with 8x10s. I've played through about 3 different ones, Ampeg, Ashdown, Marshall, a total of about 10 times. Obviously they all sound different but are all very impressive. That said, the best sound I've ever had on stage was playing ampless with two huge 15" monitors pointing up at me. I much prefer this to the 8x10s I've tried, and would describe it as far more "punchy"... but then I do have a somewhat unusual sound
12. well if you've got a good audio interface there should be no difference between the sound of the tape and the sound of the tape recorded digitally. I'd have thought you'd hear some artefacts at 192kpbs though. I always go for 356 kbps
13.
I stack the 2x10"s either way depending on how much room we have. I don't notice any real difference in the sound.
I would have thought stacking them vertically would be more likely to give you the same feeling as standing in front of an 8 x 10", as (for me) a big part of the appeal is having speakers up near your ears
14.
2. What these analogue purists don't tell you is the reason that they like the sound so much is (just like vinyl) tape distorts in a way that the human ear finds musically pleasing. However it is changing the audio. Just because the distortion is one that most people like the sound doesn't stop it being distortion and and change in the sound that the producers of the music didn't really intend. It's not "HiFi".
Very true and this is the point on which I often end up offending "HiFi Purists" who can't accept the truth
15. IMO you could get there with EQ and compression and/or drive, but I think most people will disagree with me. How are you stacking the 2 x 10"s?
16.
No, thank YOU! I won't have to have a little cry now for getting no votes on my first go, and it's all thanks to you. I love you man!
well it's very weird, which is generally a good thing with me!
17. could you not record it? I'd really like to hear what it sounds like
18. Just listened and voted. Most enjoyable, thanks all!
19. it is a bit weird, but then, imagine if this thread was about vinyl. I doubt post #2 would have gone down so well I have a tape player in my car and used to pick up tapes for 50p from charity shops. I have quite a few, but the more I play them, the more knackered they get
20. how would you rehearse your dance moves if you were playing sat down?! Doesn't make any sense
21. Two festivals this weekend, nothing huge but very enjoyable with plenty dancing and singing along. Something seems to have happened to my brain which has made drumming a lot easier and more fun. I wish the same would happen on bass!
22. sounds like it's quite compressed, but also it sounds like most of the high and (very) low end have been cut out so it's mostly just mids EDIT: You can hear a fair bit of dirt on their too. I love this band!!!
23. I still think the drums in general sound a bit "weak" but mastering might sort that out, well, other than the toms which don't seem to cut through at all
24. or people really just want the cash, but are willing to trade basses and play the market if they can potentially make a profit
25. Festival on Friday and it was ace. The mix was OK but way too loud as usual. Sound on stage was pretty mushy. The crowd were so good we really didn't care. Best gig for ages!
