what sample rate mp3 are you encoding Dad? I probably shouldn't admit this but I can never tell the difference between 320kbps mp3 and CD WAV file (encoded on Cubase) -
no idea but I like it! Great bass sound

Looking for helpful comments on band's first recording

I agree with everything Dad says, sounds great. It sounds like there are two keys parts most of the way through? I'd probably pan them on opposite sides to free up some more space in the middle. Other than that, maybe a bit more reverb on the vocals or a bit of slap-back? But I'd whack a big dollop of master compression on there first, to see how it all sounds when it's loud. -
This is more obvious to me on drums. When I'm in the right mood, nothing matters, I just sit down and play. When I'm in the wrong mood, I'm constantly moving stands and drums, tightening things, basically blaming everything I can possibly think of except myself for my lacklustre performance.

Booming from rear ports - suggestions? Problem now solved!
cheddatom replied to Painy's topic in Amps and Cabs
when I use an amp, I like to stand on the opposite side of the stage/room. I feel like I can hear myself better and get a more realistic impression of the sound from a distance. It also means the guitarist does the same, so he too gets a better "picture"... plus we can both reach each others' volume controls if it gets out of hand -
I would agree, but certain situations require the always on pre-amp. Ideally, I would have a totally flat rig/combo and use that in combination with different pre-amp depending on the gig. Unfortunately I can't afford, so I just DI and rely on the monitors. I suppose if you play in one band, and have one main sound, you'd be better off getting the rig to do that.

Ahpook's used strings stand (CLOSED FOR THE MOMENT)
cheddatom replied to ahpook's topic in Completed Items
I think it might have been Tayste but you don't see him around much any more -
Saturday was an outdoor festival, back of a lorry. Great weather and atmosphere but awful sound. The PA was on the stage and I think this was adding to problems. The drumkit wouldn't stay still. When will I learn to reject the supplied "shells" and just put my own kit on? Last night was better, great sound indoors at the Hare and Hounds.

Ahpook's used strings stand (CLOSED FOR THE MOMENT)

Wasn't a BCer running a charity to send used strings to those who can't afford in poorer countries? -
Aaah, that changes everything. Maybe I should have been more specific. All the other attributes you mention (being punctual, decent gear etc.) are, in my experience, abscent from those drummers without cases. Those I've run into without cases were slovenly in all other departments, which contributed to an all-round lack of professionalism. The specific issue of the cases wasn't meant. Especially not when you're punctual, have decent gear, clear cases away etc. etc. No offence intended
Not offended at all! I was genuinely interested, as these guys obviously know I'm always on time etc. and yet still demand I use cases. It seems totally irrational to me, but 2 members of this band are quite insistent on this point, and I'm pretty sure they're not totally insane

In Peak District for weekend - what's on?
cheddatom replied to Truckstop's topic in General Discussion
Cool Chris! I'll be headlining Saturday night, not been before, looking forward to it! -
I hope you don't feel like that...
Sorry, I've just had a re-read and I realise I've been misinterpreting some of your posts - just a misunderstanding, mainly because I'm new to all the "humour" surrounding these BF threads. Anyway, I'd leave it there but I just have to say one more time Timmy C is the daddy of bass tone!
Finally.
Finally what? That post implies we were in the throws of battle and you've just won? If that's how you feel then well done! All I ever said on this thread is that it's a great endorsement, and honestly it feels like you have been picking away at my posts, attempting to prove me wrong about something. I always thought you were a pretty cool dude and liked and respected your posting style. I guess I should have continued to avoid the BF threads but Timmy C is a bit of an idol for me so I thought I'd join in.
So which is it? Is it good to overpower the FOH mix or not? If it's not overpowering the FOH mix then the audience aren't hearing the cab directly... and the loudness of the cabs is kind of a moot point. Or if it is... That's not very good for a balanced FOH mix is it?
Sorry, I thought it was clear that I was being sarcastic. He's not overpowering the FOH. You can probably hear a mix of the rig and FOH in the venue but it's very difficult to judge from a phone video. That would be fairly standard for a venue that size anyway. Is anyone actually claiming that the BF cabs are contributing masses to his FOH or recorded tone? They're probably playing a small part in a very complicated chain and mix. All I'm saying is that if he likes them, they must be ace

I've never seen one of these famous "barefaced bashing threads" before and I'm quite perplexed now that I'm actually in one. Anyway, just on the point of close-micing - I do a lot of recording, and I've recorded a lot of different bass cabs with 10" speakers. They all sound different to me, no matter how close my mic is.
-
I really don't understand the need to go into any more detail than this: Tim Commerford, the daddy of bass tone, has chosen barefaced cabs to use in his latest rig. That means he's either suffering from severe mental illness, or they're great cabs. Probably the latter Whether or not you need a cab live, or whether or not you get the "sound of the cab" through the PA, or whether or not these cabs are totally revolutionary are all beside the point of the endorsement, surely?
Yes, I am. That would drive me nuts, but ultimately it's none of my business.
It would drive you nuts if you played with a drummer who didn't use cases? I just don't get it! I turn up early, I'm set up in 10 minutes, I have spare skins and sticks, all my gear is in good nick (apart from the floor tom leg I need to fix before the weekend!!!) and I don't f*** up. The cases I do use are always out of the way. I just don't get the problem. I gigged for years without cases, and cases are not cheap!
