1. I don't think I'm explaining myself very well. Tim C gets involved in his sounds in a very intricate way. His rig is complex. He modifies his own basses, pedals, and amps. He's used a wide variety of tones. Lots of people are very interested in how he gets his sounds. He's not a plug in and play guy, he does something more interesting than that. While his endorsement might not shift more units (although I suspect it will) it means a lot to me (and I suspect many others) because he's a tone genius. Other people have great sounds, but they tend to stick with them for a whole song, or a whole album, or even a whole career. Imagine if Chris Wolstenholme endorsed a new dirt/synth pedal. That'd mean a lot wouldn't it. This is similar IMO
2. I'm not saying TC will shift more units than those other super-celeb-bassists, I'm just saying the guy is known for being a tone fiend, and IMO he's never had a bad tone, unlike all those other guys
3. I've been on the other end of this as a drummer - the band demanded that I buy cases to transport my drums in, because "it looks unprofessional when you walk into a venue without them in cases". Are any of you that anal?
4.
McCartney, King, Flea, Sting, that u2 bloke that would play through a Saisho tape player from the 80s if you put his squiggle on it?
All great musicians but they're not known for their tone specifically IMO. All those guys are pretty inconsistent with tone anyway aren't they? That's what I mean - whether or not Tim C is a virtuoso bassist or whether or not you like his music, I'm pretty sure it's a fact that he's widely regarded as a bit of a "tone wizard" on the bass.
5. I don't use an amp but just use the monitors at whatever venue I'm playing - no IEMs - works for me!
6. I can't think of another bassist who's had such a consistently brilliant tone. He has loads of different sounds, some of them really quite ambitious. I realise this sounds sycophantic but I can't think of another "celebrity endorsement" I'd put so much stock into
7. now you're being silly. I just need to know if it can handle being dropped down a pub fire escape by a drunken idiot, I don't think that's an unreasonable request
8. In one of my bands, sticking to arrangements can be a bit tricky. There's one member who struggles a bit, and we learned a long time ago just to follow him. The problem is that now some of the fans seem to know the (CD) arrangements better than him! I guess sometimes it'd be better to play them the same every time
9. would you mind chucking it down the stairs? I think that's the real test. My TNT has taken a lot of tumbles over the last 15 years without any damage
10. After watching the demo I decided that I definitely need it. Now I just need to put myself through months of hell saying "You have enough dirt pedals, save your money"... probably easier than pre-ordering then having to endure the torture while your money sits in someone else's account
11. Tim Commerford has always has impeccable tone. That's probably because he looks at it in an incredibly detailed way. He's notorious for getting every single detail right. I can think of other players who might be better, or who's sounds I might occasionally prefer, but I couldn't imagine a better endorsement for cabs. Well done Alex!
12.
Very good, let's hope they pick it up!
...on time!
13.
I've been in many bands who were only writing and performing original songs and in reality you'll rarely get a "blank canvas". If the song is already written you get to put a bass part to the song and that might give you creative input or no scope at all.
It depends on the band I suppose. The bands I've been in have been very collaborative and democratic
14.
I had a sunburst/maple 72 , humbucker version. At the time I was playing a fair bit with a pick and couldn't get a sound from it so I converted it to fretless with a replacement neck. In the end I sold it in bits and made more than it was worth. These days my stage bass is a 90's cij Blueflower single coil version - though I did put a quarter pounder in it , changed the reverse pegs and added a baddassIII. I also put an extra screw in the clear pickguard. Beer bottle labels under that - dice knobs - job done !!
sounds ace! Got any photos?
15. I think once the song is written, there's little difference between the two, but I do love the writing aspect of playing in originals bands. Even if the part I go for is just root 5ths, or just a straight drum beat, I still start with a totally blank canvas and can do whatever I want.
16. I notice the warwick mini rock thumb bass is always on there... are they no good or something?
17. I used to love the punch and bright switches on my peavey TNT, especially in a live setting
18. New venue for us on Friday and it looked cool as f*** when we got there. I was really looking forward to it but as it got closer to the stage time no-one seemed to be arriving. We ended up playing to about 20 utterly disinterested people and 1 crazy dancing drunk, who's dancing was so crazy it made me laugh so hard I actually dropped a beat (on drums). Oh well :/
19.
I'm using a Darkglass B3K and TC Hyper Gravity compressor. The amp was a Genz Benz shuttle 9 into an Ampeg 8x10
Thanks! Do you know if most of the signal is from the mic or DI? Do you know the mic? Anyway, it's an awesome sound
20. I use a DD-20 a lot on bass, it's great! Not tried the RE-20
21.
... and is therefore all the more effective when it returns..! Change nothing.
I wasn't suggesting they change it! It sounds great! I'm just a bit of a bastard... and I've been writing lists of tiny changes I need to make to about 20 of my own mixes so I'm stuck in that sort of "detail mode"
22. your ears will fatigue after 20 minutes of loud music, no matter what cab it's played through. It's too loud. Wear ear protection or turn down. It could be that the cabs in question are producing less "mids" (whichever frequency you like to cut through) and so you're turning up to compensate, which would make the fatigue worse and more immediate.
