1. I think harmless prat is pretty accurate. I can't see that he's doing anyone any harm? Although he's clearly nuts
2. I wonder what the monitoring is like here? http://www.debees.com/
3. I imagine the dirt pedal he's using has been modded, or there's EQ on there. You can clearly hear the dirt is through a separate rig, and again this could have a prominent mid boost, giving that sort of sound.
4. It's that nasal sound that implies parametric EQ (or stuck wah) to me. I don't know of any fuzz pedals with a parametric EQ but that'd certainly be cool!
5. There's a boss dirt pedal with parametric mids as well, I think it's the Metal Zone? That always sounds pretty meaty on bass... I should get one
6.
The people I jam with are I would say at a decent level and have told me I can play but I'm playing such basic stuff nearly anyone could play it.
I know I'm the 10th person to quote this but... There's a difference between playing a basic bassline properly, and basic playing. It's true that most people could hit root notes and 5ths pretty much in time, but would it "feel" right? I guess your 3 years of learning has developed your sense of how to play the bass so that while you might be playing basic lines, you're playing properly. I'm sure we've all heard a lead guitarist pick up a bass. They normally play the right notes, and pretty much at the right time, but it "feels" all wrong
7. well it's not necessarily good advice! It's just what I'd do. Let us know how you get on anyway
8. If I was going to try and emulate that sound, I'd probably start with my jackhammer in a blended loop, cut the lows and highs, and then play with the mids until it got to where I wanted. The whole lot would have to go through a decent amp or amp-sim though. The jackhammer is an ace pedal anyway, very versatile and you can get them used for under £40. It might be worth you grabbing one to experiment?
9.
Hard to argue with that. His Calpol consumption was through the roof.
I thought it was their guitarist who always had calpol to hand?
10. If you listen on headphones you can hear his "clean" sound down the middle, which sounds like a slightly overdriven valve amp, then on one side is the dirty channel, which is what I'm saying sounds like a stuck wah. I'm at work so can't check it on speakers - it might be totally different!
11. hadn't seen them before, thanks!
12. on that solo it sounds almost like a "stuck wah" or some sort of parametric EQ on the dirtiest channel. I know he tends to blend a few channels. So, I would guess a dirty pedal with a parametric mid (E.G marshall jackhammer) in a clean blend would get you fairly close.
13.
Ah man, that's a shame. They have a killer video screen too.
That was half of the attraction. We usually have to carry around our own TV to show the football in the background but it's a bitch to carry. I think we'll start checking with the landlords in advance, nothing less than a wall mounted 42" LED from now on
14. A band I used to know once played without their bassist. They had a life size cardboard cut out made of him with his bass on stage, and his parts recorded onto a sequencer
15.
Good work! Should blow their socks off at the Tickled Trout.
I've pulled that gig, the monitoring wasn't up to much
16.
A Grand Don't Come For Free is one of my favourite albums. A masterpiece!
Yeh, spine-tingling in parts! Good call I wonder if my band's album would count? It's sort of all encapsulated in a website... www.theallimportantliedetectortest.com
17. that beater is on it's soft side, the side facing up is wood but I really didn't like the sound of that as it's pretty clicky anyway. I was going to use a fully soft beater but for some reason it's shaft won't fit in this particular pedal. I should have mentioned, I have this going through 3 pedals, a boss noise gate, a boss bass EQ, and a boss bass limiter. The natural sound of this mic in a box isn't much good for anything other than triggering (which is what the guy in that video was using his for). I'd like to play about with different size boxes and different amount of dampening but I know I'll never find the time to bother as this set-up works so well!
18. Well I went with the video Dad recommended and have my own cost free tupperware kick! I just need to fix some rubber to the bottom to stop it moving so much, although I think it'll be OK on a drum rug. This is recorded with a go pro and the kick going through the small PA in my live room
19. I have an old keyboard flightcase converted to a pedalboard. This has all my spares inside and I don't use an amp, so this and my bass in a bag.
20. There's really no substitute! You just need a roadie now
21.
...The zoom just does one tone regardless of playing dynamics.
I think that depends on the model you're using. I'm not sure what that particular model has, but I know the tube screamer on my b2.1u is pretty responsive I could be miles off but I think I have a similar sound to the one in your head. This is using an ibanez SS10 which is chorus and tube screamer in one pedal. I have them on parallel so they're blended about 50/50. I have the gain quite low, but my bass is very loud so I can go from clean to very dirty. Then, I put this in another loop blending about 50/50 again. This all goes into a limiter, and then into an amp sim. I turn up loud, and when I play soft, it's loud but clean, when I play hard, it's loud but dirty. Something about the tube screamer enhances the mids in a very pleasing way, and with a bass boost on the amp sim, I have a huge sound. I still like to kick in some fuzz of extra dirt occasionally though. I really think that to fill out the whole spectrum you'll probably need more than one pedal. Octavers, chorus, delay, can all thicken up the sound
22.
Yes I've got a Mesa Rectifier guitar rig but I'm thinking practically I'm not going to be carting a bass rig and a guitar rig along to gigs / rehearsals etc... Would I have to send the signal to the guitar rig an octave up?
Yeh, it's not very practical. I used to do it! You wouldn't need an octave up, just cut out most of the bass from the signal going to the guitar amp (could use the guitar amps' EQ) Anyway, now I CBA to carry around two rigs, I use a combination of dirt pedals in a blended loop, which is almost as good. I wouldn't recommend any dirt pedals as it's impossible to predict what will work with your bass, your rig, and your brain!! ...however, if you're just have a huge sound, any old fuzz blended with your clean signal would do. I like the clean to provide the bottom and top, with the fuzz covering the middle (in terms of EQ) which helps with definition. Maybe something like that is possible with your zoom multi?
23. you OP implies you already have a decent guitar rig, is that right? If so, you really can't beat running a bass rig clean at the same time as a dirty guitar rig
24. there's a difference between having a nice zing to each note, and having a load of scratchy noises in between notes ...but personally I don't mind the scratchy noises
25.
Whenever Betty Davis comes up I also think about Camille yarbrough. Even more forgotten, released just the sole album which is a bit more low key than Betty Davis but pretty funky none the less. https://youtu.be/haFh_VkEhpM
Nice one!!
