1. no, the "formulaic" music is quite different to the first album. The formula wasn't yet formed, so the first album is not a sample of the pattern IMO
2.
...Where are the drugs...
Didn't there drummer have a long problem with heroin? An overdose or two I think I do think the first album is really good, and not particularly "formulaic"
3. first album was ace, 2nd ok, downhill from there. I saw them live once and got absolutely sick of it, and this was while I was actually a fan. They kept repeating sections of songs while dave ran around, letting his fans touch him etc. It seems to me that they then took this approach to arrangement. It's now verse, chorus, verse, chorus chorus chorus chorus chorus chorus chorus chorus...
4.
That's not because of the compression though, it's because you're such a tasteful and sensitive player...
Heh, not with my current band, the opposite in fact! EDIT: I suppose my previous point was that people often say "compression is for levelling out differences in volume" and IMO it's not at all. It's for modifying the transient envelope of your notes. You can use compression, and still have control over your "dynamics", depending on what you mean by that
5. running two separate rigs at the same time can be incredible, I'm not sure this can be replicated with just one. I'd go for a stereo power amp into two cabs, and keep your pedals as they are. A stereo rack EQ might help emulate some of the voicing that your amp heads are doing. But yeh, I think the main weight saving will be with the cabs, maybe just get two decent light weight cabs and keep the pedals and heads
6. what do people mean by dynamics? Sometimes people mean they can go louder (for a chorus compared to a verse, for example) where sometimes people are talking about the attack of their notes in milliseconds I use parallel compression, about 50/50, and very squishy. I get complimented on my sound every time I play bass (not very often!)
7. you might as well get a bit of overdrive built in there SFX are great, I have the split/mix pedal and it's ace
8. yes, good point, a few of the local venues round here will have the first act on at 7 or 7:30, which is just about doable for the local fans, but not really for anyone travelling
9. I usually get to gigs right at the start and haven't noticed this. If anything the crowd tends to thin out for the headline act on a local multi-band gig. Are you going to big "name" gigs or to small local gigs?
10.
I don't want to rely on effected sounds, but here's a graphical representation of what I'm trying to schieve L ----------------0000--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R loop layer 1 L ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------0000--------------------------R loop layer 2 L -------------------------------------------------------0000-----------------------------------------------------R loop layer 3 make sense? the gig rig is autopanning, I want each layer to be static in the stereo field, thanks for your thoughts tho
Ahh, I see, well, I thought the chopper could do this but after a bit more reading I'm wrong. There is however the Ernie Ball 6165 Stereo Volume/Pan Pedal which should do what you want
11. I'm a little confused as to what you need. Surely the looper will output stereo even if you on;y have a mono input, but then why would you want a stereo output with no stereo effects on it? The normal one would be a stereo chorus set subtly to create a difference between the two sides. Anyway, in case it's any use, check out this pedal which I've lusted after for years http://www.gig-fx.com/products/chopper/
12.
You guys....stop worrying about being bass heroes. Just write something you like, arrange it with your band and experience joy.
This is my approach really. The only time I get technically better at the bass is when I write something I can't play, so I then I have to practise until I can.
13. yes, take an effects send or pre-amp out from your amp, and plug this into a line input in your focusrite interface You might want to experiment with VST amp sims inside your DAW though
14. Yeh I guess some of it was hardcore, or at least somethingcore anyway I don't get the dancing, but fair enough in the middle of an open space. It's the way they were running right into the crowd who were clearly trying to avoid them that I don't get.
15. You might consider an EQ pedal, as this should do a pretty clean boost, but also, I think you might find you only want to boost mids. I think if you boost from 150Hz down, it'll sound pretty empty when you turn off the boost, unless it's really subtle. Obviously it depends on the type of gig you're playing. If there's no PA with subs then you'd probably be fine with just a clean boost, but obviously with an EQ pedal you always have the option
16.
I know a bass player who always keeps her pick in her mouth when she's playing finger style (ie between her teeth, not actually in her mouth!) It always makes me nervous watching her, cos I'm terrified she'll swallow it if she starts rocking out. And it must be difficult to do the heimlich manoeuvre on someone wearing a bass!
I used to do this until I discovered thumb picks, which allow me to do both picking and finger style
17. 5 metal bands and we were 2nd on. The shared cab was a Behringer 8 x 10 and I had it LOUD. It was just wonderful, until my earplug fell out. Still, very enjoyable to play bass for once Strange crowd though. A bunch of young guys punching and kicking seemingly randomly at first, but then definitely at the crowd close by, which inevitably ended in a fight. What's wrong with people?
18. I've got 3 6 strings of varying scales. The low B seems best on the middle one - not sure what the scale length is though. Anyway, the main difference for me is with string gauge. I currently have .145 from Newtone - not cheap, but very effective
19.
What about something like a thumb pick holder? It's a clip that attaches to your thumb that you can attach normal picks to. http://hardrockhaven...product-review/ I could never find nylon thumb picks that fitted comfortably and ones with a metal clip were a bugger to find, so I ended up just going with all metal ones. For the banjo that is, I use normal picks for bass.
That looks great, thanks!
20. on the subject of picks... I like to use big thumb picks but I easily wear them down within an hour of playing. I see Discreet recommends some long lasting picks but I can't find any nylon thumb picks straight from google, and searching through the music shop sites is a bit impossible. Do we have a "plectrumchat" or maybe an existing thread on here?
21.
Further to this, I don't believe good players sound bad as that is all part of the equation,
Absolutely! You can't be a good musician and also sound bad
22. Are the band there as background music? If so it should be in the background. If not then people should be paying attention and not trying to have conversations - but they only do this if you're good enough
23. They both sound good, one of them has more pronounced high mids but that can always be EQ'd
